Can't believe I forgot this was this year, brilliant album also.

I was kinda out of loop this year. Genre? Impressions? Favorite Song?

Also, its mastadon.

Generally Heavy Metal of the amazing variety. They jump effortlessly from sub-genre to sub-genre.

Favorite song... would probably be Bedazzled Fingernails... but that is mostly just within the context of the whole album. Its really an album that works best as an album.

So...Mogwai.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit, this came out of this year? Damn, totally feels like a 2010 record. Great stuff, can't believe I forgot all about it. I blame it coming out same month as PJ...

PJ, in my opinion, is probably the best album released this year, as it's beautifully crafted and performed, full of real emotion and ideas. A glorious record. I just preferred Gloss Drop more, imperfections and all.

I didn't care for it much. But I don't really love Mastodon as many others do.

I'm going to go with a relatively unknown album, because plenty of great albums came out this year but have gotten plenty of attention (Bon Iver, Opeth's Heritage, Radiohead's The King of Limbs, Foster the People's Torches, etc.).

Zechs Marquise is the band, this sophomore album is "Getting Paid", a solid album of mostly instrumental rocking, with tasty guitar solos and melodies aplenty, and some sweet grooves and effects.

Check out the opening song for some sweet instrumental jamming.

Any fans of The Mars Volta should know the band's percussionist/keyboardist is the drummer of this band, and Omar's other siblings play guitar and bass. The music itself doesn't sound too Mars Volta, however, but I've enjoyed this album more than the last few Mars Volta releases.

Understandable... Mastodon are kind of a wild card as far as I'm concerned. I've gotten people who hate heavy metal to love them and vice versa. For me, I love that they (tend) to focus on the groove and their drummer is incredible.

Lykke Li - Wounded Rhymes deserved a mention. Beautiful album

This year really was shitty though for my personal taste in music. Even some of my favorite bands released albums I didn't like at all (Mastodon, Thursday and Thrice). Not to mention that Thursday and Thrice broke up too. :(

edit: Oh yeah, forgot about Trash Talk - Awake. So good.

Some of their songs just seem to have random beat changes that don't add much outside of surprise. I still don't really "get" Leviathan and the one that came after it, but I listen to them from time to time waiting for them to catch on. Sometimes, I'll really get into a few minutes of a particular track, but I can't seem to sit down and listen to a full album.

I can listen to a full Amon Amarth record, though, which is weird. I'm not into metal at all anymore, but something about dudes singing about Norse mythology over crunching guitars and double bass drums does it for me.

I guess I kinda think of them as a modern ledzepplin (led zepplin fans don't let that build up any sort of inflated hype) as far as overall guitar/drum interaction goes. I don't know if that'll help you get into them, but I love that interplay between the two.

Not that "different" from the rest of their discography, but I think that's great. Don't fix it if it ain't broken. For those that have never heard them before, their music is basically a lovechild of progrock and electronic music on drugs.

Runners up:
Boris - Heavy Rocks II
Devin Townsend - Ghost
Fennesz + Sakamoto - Flumina

Haven't listened to the New Steven Wilson or Mastodon album yet, but I don't think my AOTY will change after I've given them a listen.

I'm not sure if this is my 100% album of the year... but I cannot think of one better at the moment

The Dodos: No Color

There's just a great sense of energy and pop sensibilities that hones all the things these two guys have been working towards. They take the best of Visiter and the best of Time to Die and splice it into one wonderfully intricate freak-folk package.

Zola Jesus- Contaus

Love her style and this CD was exemplary. Took the best things from her recent EPs and made them better. Truly a CD worth a listen

Oh, and as far as fun, friendly rock goes, nothing this year beat The Joy Formidable- The Big Roar

I forgot about this too! So good

No one's said Smother yet? Wild Beasts' best one yet. Came out early on in the year and is still the one I'm returning to most. Incredible album.

Yep, Mogwai came out at the start of the year. It's the only 2011 album that I have on my mp3 player that I actually still listen to with any regularity.

Explosions in the Sky? Don't really listen to it outside of the opening track and "Postcard from 1952."

Radiohead? I "get it," but I think I'm kind of "over" this band. They don't play the type of music that appeals to me anymore.

Fleetfoxes? I got tired of the vocals after a while.

The Mogwai album still has little surprises for me today, and focusing on the different textures of each song is a nice reward. It's probably one of their most poppy albums, but it's also rich and diverse.

I have no idea if this is even applicable, but did you ever give the Dodo's album a shot? Its the one album that I keep coming back too over and over.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Listening to the Justice album right now. "Canon" is mega hot videogamey hotness.

Just "discovered" it through the thread as well. Super glad someone mentioned it. Would have totally missed it.

Would not consider myself into rap or hip-hop: if someone were to ask me what i listen to i wouldnt even think mentioning the genre but Oneirology by Cunninlynguist and Return Of 4ever by Big Krit are the albums this year I listened to the most this year. you should give it a listen even if its not the type of music you listen to.

i haven't listened to much new stuff this year but of the stuff i have heard:

m83 - hurry up, we're dreaming
mogwai - hardcore will never die but you will
cliff martinez - drive ost

honorable mentions:

james black - st
cults - st (though this fizzled out when i saw them live and they suuuuucked)

Arcade Fire Suburbs (was that this year?)

Suburbs was 2010. also surprised the GWTDT is top album already. With how long it's been out and how long the soundtrack is, I imagine it's not even possible to have heard it that many times :p

Sometimes I have a tendency to dismiss Scottish alternative (? rock, whatever, not sure what to assign it as) music as generally being a bit crap, or at least not my sort of thing, but then I remember about Mogwai and Idlewild, and I shut the hell up pronto. Two bands I'll never get sick of, and who's output ensures Biffy Clyro haven't ruined their homeland's reputation (yet).

Aside from some of the albums already mentioned in this thread these two made a big impression on me this year.
