Desperate Half-Life fans mail crowbars to Valve, write essays on Hitler

Doing things first, and influencing others aren't one and the same. You know that yeah?

Did Microsoft influence the market with motion sensing controllers? No? Why not? They had it long before Nintendo and Sony did.

There was third party motion controllers long before Microsoft btw, but that's apples to oranges.

Microsoft was unsuccessful with it's motion controls, the implementation of regenerating health in Tribes for example, or dedicated grenade button in Team Fortress was not. Just because Bungie "borrowed" all this stuff and introduced it to a new audience, when this was nothing new as far as PC games were concerned, they deserve the credit for the "innovation"? That makes no sense.

Wow... arguing about how "good" Stalker was? Are you kidding me? The vanilla version was basically riddled with bugs, and everything about this game was broken on release. The balancing was shit on the hardest settings and the AI was magically hitting every bullet with guns that absolutly lacked accuracy when I used them., so basically "cheating" AI. The openness of the world, made random encounters without cover, outside the setpieces, a chore.

If it weren't for the enthusiast modding scene and the complete mod, I'd say Stalker was a victim of GSC promising too much and delivering too little.

Somebody is going to use this post and alter it ever-so-slightly to befit Skyrim.

We already knew that. Remember when the game was going to be open world? And there would be other NPC Stalkers in the game that could beat the game before you? And that you were going to need to eat and sleep and make camps?

Yeah, none of that made it in, the game was basically cancelled, then revived and released but was nothing like the original game they promised.

Nailed it. Crysis was fun, but the sandbox was very limited.

And the t-shrit started all of it, if I remember correctly.

But Crysis wasn't really trying to be an open-world game. It was just a corridor wide enough to allow for multiple approaches to combat. And that meant they were able to put a massive amount of polish on pretty much every aspect, unlike Stalker which was more ambitious, but janky to the point of being broken.

And Crysis really is one of the hallmark FPS games, up there with Half-life 2, Halo, Doom etc. It's pretty baffling that there are still people who think it was just a pretty tech demo.

I really hope the various HL (ep) 3 rumors lately do lead to something soon. The various rumblings might just be self-sustaining because of fans hyping each other up, but generally nowadays when something in the game business is "rumored" it's almost always true.

Why does every freaking thread turn into fanboy arguments? I mean seriously...

Half Life 1 is my favourite game of all time, but I can see why people prefer games like Crysis or Halo. Why do they have to try to convince others otherwise? :\

Because this is a discussion forum. Jesus Fucking Christ.

I'm not asking for the game to come out tomorrow, all I'm asking is for valve to be a little more open about it, are they or aren't they working on it, "will talk about it when its time" is getting really fucking mundane/old.

Well, presumably they spent quite a while iterating on and considering different possible structures and approaches to continuing Half-Life, then they had to do pre-production, and then they had to get far enough into the game that when they announce it they could show off something meaningful and not just give another empty promise that would irritate people more than soothe them.

I am going to take a stab in the dark here and say that Valve is incredibly proud of the Half-Life series and think that each new game in the series will bring the FPS genre forward.

Therefore they may feel that the have a lot to lose by revealing - to their competitors - the game too early. And, pride being what it is, want to make a BIG splash when they finally reveal the game.

And Crysis and STALKER are nothing alike.

SMH....the things I have to point out....

Crysis is an FPS

STALKER is an RPG

I think its quite ridiculous that I played both the half life and kingdom hearts series in middle school but have yet to seen the release of a proper 3rd game as I'm about to graduate college. Its been almost a decade for kh and even more so for hl. I understand the need for innovation and all that, but there comes a time where you're obligated to finish what you started and give the fans a reasonable time frame between games. All the fans of KH are basically adults now. I'm guessing they would have to release a kingdom hearts collection before the 3rd just because of that.

STALKER is most often listed as a 'first-person-shooter'. The shooting's also a far more significant part to the gameplay than say in Fallout 3, which can be accurately referred to as an 'rpg'. Though it's for damn sure that Crysis and STALKER are nothing alike.

Anyway, still can't believe you'd put Crysis up there with Half-Life and Doom. Past them even.

Back from the labs. Results are in.

Crysis droolz, STALKER rulez. Halo is lame. Half-Life 3 for 2012.

STALKER is an RPG

No, it isn't. There is no plot interactivity, which is required to classify it as a roleplaying game. Just because an action (or any other game for that matter) game has an a bigger emphasis on stat-based mechanics does NOT automatically turn it into an RPG.

Objectively false. That disqualifies every single Final Fantasy, among others.

RPGs are games where you act out a role in a story, combined with having a degree of control over your character's development.

And so what if it does when it's true? FF are mainly strategy/tactics games (and with exploration element). All SRPGs are the same as well. JRPG/SRPG/TRPG/etc. acronyms are just misnomers which are only there because of the convenience. Just because there is character development doesn't make something an RPG. Diablo isn't an RPG. Neither is Jagged Alliance. Niether is Demon's Souls. What makes something a a "real" RPG is the elasticity/interactivity of the plot, not that the units/characters you control can persist and level throughut the game. The difference between those and "pure" action/strategy games is that avatar's stats are more prominent and customizable by the player.

It just seems like they stopped at a brick wall though. Now with all the waiting it seems like its going to be HL3 but from a story standpoint I don't see why they thought it would make sense to not make an Episode 3.

Think there is a very small degree of influence to be had on story elements in STALKER, though that's mostly relegated to a choice in faction alliances. There isn't any character development though (in terms of stats), all the progression is related to equipment you find. Though I guess that half counts.

The Steamcast guys were reliable before, but this wouldn't be the first time someone goes "ah, fuck it, I'm going to troll everyone pretending I have inside info".

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=27186208&postcount=1

This is my official post on how I stumbled upon my recently disclosed piece of information. The credibility will be determined by you.

Flow of information

spitfire1945 <--- Leveraged <--- Informant <--- Source connected with Valve

The information that I recently disclosed was 2nd tier information. 2nd tier information spans out on 2 levels. Leveraged is or was in contact with a contact that is friends with this Source connected with Valve.

The Informant contacted Leveraged with some information, and Leveraged wanted to see what part of that information could be shared with you while still maintaining the integrity of Valve secrets, so he came to me (Spitfire) to get my opinion on it. We are still not 100% certain of the credibility of the Informant… however, everything he's said so far has been correct dating back before the announcement of CS:GO, so we're optimistically hopeful.

Players

Who is Leveraged? Leveraged is a very fine gentleman who was part of the ARG group that was invited to Valve for Portal 2 release. His credibility is very high. In fact he even helped debunk the latest Half Life ARG phenomenon that was going around. Oh, he also created the Portal 2 ARG Wiki & Valve ARG Network.

What I've been told

I will quote you exactly what I was told.

Gabe has given the go ahead to drop hints for the next half life game.

What this means to us.

It is basically confirming that all the random things we've been seeing around Valve games relating to Half-Life are not people hallucinating on LSD. Nothing less nothing more. Do not assume anything else. You know what happens when people assume.

However, I don't want to further discuss this further. The Informant has shared more information beyond this but I am choosing not to share more info because if we do we can kiss Steamcast's professional relationship with Valve goodbye. I believe in journalism but not aggressive journalism. It's not like we are exposing a political tyrant. Plus I wouldn't want to ruin anything for Valve in their future endeavors and especially ruin any potential surprises (if there are any) for the rest of us.

Responsibility

In the event that this information turns out to be wrong then I and Leveraged have agreed to solely take the blame for it. Not my co-hosts, Sam or Brad. Steamcast has no part take in these matters.

Final Word

I know everyone is frustrated, everyone is tired of waiting and as Valve's biggest fan I am too. I just want everyone to hold their heads together and just follow through with things. Personally, this is not a situation I wanted myself to be in but the Informant came to us, and sometimes you have to man up and take risks even if everyone else hates you for it.

All I know is if they include 'modern' shit like iron sights, regenerating health etc. I'll fucking kill someone.

Please for the love of everything on this planet just finish the Half Life trilogy how it always was. No special extra 'evolution' or being able to see through walls/see where the enemy AI is going to walk like Shitman. No 2 weapon limit and making your character run slower based on weight and all that shit.

If they want to reboot Half Life after that fine but give us Half Life 3 as one last hoorah of classic HL gameplay.

Agreed, except that it was much better than Half-Life 2. Actually, I thought Far Cry, at least up until you see the monsters, was better than Half-Life 2 too.

Crytek are FPS masters. It's a shame that people think they can't do anything but pretty graphics.

Crysis 1, Stalker: SoC/CoP and HL2/Ep 2 are some of the best FPS games ever made.

Arguing about them is missing the point. They should encourage furious masturbation, nothing more.

It would be funny (as other people have already theorized) if the coal we are collecting is related to the Borealis, the same way the potatoes were related to GLaDOS.

I mean how the hell is coal related to Christmas?!

It's a...a "thing".

Like...if you were naughty, you'd get coal in your stocking for Christmas? People know this right? Right?

You know, I've never seen a game where the community created self hype for a game before. Especially to these insane levels. Valve must be proud.
