Would you be happy if "Next-Gen" games looked like this ?

Just give me this:

gow3-30.jpg

with consistent high res textures, more polys, higher resolution and at least 40 FPS locked as a mininum.

But wouldn't you want the power of better hardware to facilitate a protagonist who isn't a duchebag?

I cannot fucking wait to see the first generation of games running on the new console hardware.

Regardless of whether we'll be blown away (unlikely) or disappointed (likely :( ), the threads are going to be the best. This generation of consoles has already gone on for too long.

Games cost way too much to make as it is. I'm fine with the way they look right now, lets just fix the minor issues they have (like textures not always loading properly, and jaggies).

biggest expensive upgrades from last gen to current gen is imo, textures and shaders. I think next gen, the expensive upgrades will be in physics simulation applied to character like cloth and physics. furthermore, I think effect like the latest Max Payne 3 with realistic cloth wrinkle simulation will be the standard for AAA games. I also hope animation will get bigger focus next gen.

I know this is gaf which doesn't represent the views of the larger market, but I'm really surprised between the new xbox specs thread and wii u speculation thread how much stock everyone is putting in a machine's specs.

How fast the cpu or gpu is has never convinced me to buy or pass up a system. Graphics like the ones in the op are fine with me. My hope is that a comparably smaller increase in power from this gen to next gen would keep game budgets in check for developers which (in theory) could lead to more time, effort, and finances going towards making advances on the gameplay front.

Honestly, the hair annoys me and the face is low poly but the rest is absolutely ace. Such great lighting, great clothing textures, environment design, no aliasing, smooth as butter...

If FEAR, Half-life 2, and Doom 3 were earlier glimpses of what was to come, then I think, by Looking at what Cryengine 3 and Frosbite 2 are doing, that we will be seeing more a better uses of lighting before new ventures in physics.

He's too tan for that blonde hair. Is that next gen's new "thing"? From bald space marines to tan people?

Sure, but those are unrealistic expectations. Ultimately 60 FPS with minimal to no tearing matters most to me.

EDIT: Also I think FFXIV has the best character design in the series (and really good environments), though it very different from the sci-fi/fantasy hybrids.

Looks pretty white to me, the shadows/fire are what makes him look slightly tan (you can see his actual skin color when Navi floats over him.)

Well Holy Shit.

Bravo Nintendo, Bravo.

I haven't followed the WiiU at all because well (lolNintendo) but this ... this is nice.

And that was just a tech demo, made in a couple months, on early underpowered dev kits. Imagine what a final game would look like...

IMO the Zelda experience demo already looks like the FF13 shots in the OP, with some caveats (Link's hair and face, obviously.)

Oh yeah sure, I just like this one more than many of the others I've seen because the image quality is quite nice and you can see the colors and lighting much better.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Eh...?
Tech demos tend to look better than games.
That Tri-Ace one for PS360 is insane.

If ~actual~ Gaming switches over to phones and Tablets I will commit suicide and leave instructions for someone to tell GAF that I actually did it.

I'd volunteer but in the case of that doomsday scenario I'd probably have one foot off the ledge myself by the time news of your death reached me.

Art direction is what I care about the most, although more powerful hardware will make it easier to have less framerate drops and higher resolutions (I hope). I mean, Rayman Origins and Alice: Madness Returns both look incredible already, and I struggle to see much room for improvement for the former.

With that image quality and probably the same quality animation as the actual CGI at a good framerate, yea, that's probably good enough for me.

Well that looks like the Temple of Time, which to be fair was desaturated in TP too. :p
I didn't like the look of TP at all. At all. This new Zelda (tech demo or future game) at least looks visually enticing. I just want a bit more color.

How about if this is what GTA6 looks like?
I'd be happier if it looked like this at a locked framerate:
a few from 1.25....

Really nice lighting, but If I remember correctly (from screenshots released back then), that demo didn't have any AA. You can't see that on GIF, of course, but aliasing is visible even in the youtube video you linked to.

Licorice-flavoured booze?
I'll be happy as long as they equal current PC games maxed out (inc aa and af) at a minimum of 720p with a touch of improved ai and physics, that will be impressive to me, some people on here may not agree but lets not forget that not everyone that owns a PC can play games maxed out, if you own a top spec PC then I really would temper your expectations of next gen consoles.

I'm getting tired of linking to TP Dolphin shots at this point. :p But TP was gorgeous, it was just limited by the hardware (well, of course...)

I'd be happy with this gens graphics in 1080p, better animation and textures, 60 frames and full AA.

Would almost look like a generation leap to be honest.

I'd be happy if this generation lasted another 5 years. Developers need to drop the graphics mantra and focus on more important game elements. XBLA and PSN are havens for amazing looking games that prove we don't actually need a new generation for some time, just better artists.

We need more ram to store hd sprites. More resources means more freedom for artist to do their thing.

WHAT !?!

You have to be in an extreme minority. 5 years is a bit excessive ... no ?

I posted something similar to this in another thread, but playing Mario Galaxy in HD on my gaming PC really changed my perspective. I basically no longer care about super realistic shaders and stuff. Just give me awesome image quality, preferable 60 fps, great art style, and 1080p minimum and I'll be happy. That Zelda Wiiu demo is a pretty good example of what I want, except with a higher resolution hahaha

Ask me about the GAF Notebook

Yeah just look at the time Cappy had getting M&M:Clash of Heroes to run. Load times are rather long, and they mentioned RAM constraints were definitely something they ran into.

It's amazing how good IMO some older games still look on the PC purely because of the IQ you can get.
