Final Fantasy VII 15th Anniversary

Nice to see FF7 still gets some love on the internet. I really wish I had the time to go back and replay the entire game again. The 4 disc soundtrack goes a long way in bringing back those memories though.

For example?

I'm not disagreeing (yet!) but this seems to be a common sentiment and I personally don't understand what moments wouldn't translate well in an updated remake
save for crashing the highwind into WEAPONS repeatedly
Man squats.
In fact, the entire Honeybee/Don arc.
The slapstick, violence comedy.
The hyper-exaggerated characters, such as Heidegger with their cartoon laughter and demeanor. I mean, fucking Bugenhagen is an eccentric old man on a flying ball. Put that in a Compilation-style FFVII and try to get it to work.
Fucking Cait Sith, man. That he wasn't on the giant robot in AC is telling, and he didn't exactly work at just the cat part either.

I mean, the writing, the way scenes are set out, the scenarios and much of the mini-game gameplay is all based around a chibi-ish artstyle. SNES spritework translated to 3D. If you want to remake it in the contemporary FFVII artstyle, you'd have to re-work so much of it else it'd fall flat on its face. Just look at the vast tonal difference between anything in the Compilation compared to FFVII itself. And those few elements they did keep tonally the same, such as Rude and Reno, were so ridiculously out of place they'd have threatened to de-rail the entire film were it not already a train-wreck from the word go.

And once you lose that tone, that wistfulness, it's not FFVII anymore. It's something else. I didn't fall in love with hyper-androgynous, "I can't save anyone", navel-gazing characters in a colour-less, super-serious world.

I like this post, so much true.

This thread made me think about how much I miss a good RPG. I was going to wait for Xenoblade. Ironically though I am just going to download Final Fantasy IX.

While most of this is true, I think it would come down to smart choices vs. how closely they tried to stick to the original. AC was, for the most part, completely devoid of FF7 style humour, but I don't think those more realistic models would be out of place in an HD™ Honeybee Inn. Stuff like Bugenhagen or Heidegger, Palmer, etc. also don't seem like a huge issue to me. Lots of more modern games have characters that are similarly eccentric or exaggerated.

Rude and Reno are dumb in AC, I agree, but only because of the tone of everything else. Cloud as emotionless robot vs. slapstick comedy makes it seem out of place, but if a remake tried to balance things out, I think it would be okay.

I just want to see Priscilla in HD, man.

Anyway, there were a lot of favorite moments; I loved the satisfaction of of the chocobo breeding. However the first time I saw this, I was pretty stoked.

Even to this day, I think this is my most memorable moment in the game. This was a pretty effective way to get the point across that Sephiroth is a fucking monster and your party may not even be all that equipped to handle him. Unlike JRPG villains of today, his approach was brutal, but still let his actions speak louder than words.

Man, I'm probably going to end up replaying FFVII now. I always appreciated that it strove to make a pretty diverse world more than anything else.

Too bad the Compilation did way much more harm than good for FFVII, especially having characters act in ways they did not before, even with the ho-hum translation.

Exactly. I would even say that the game presents opposing natures in art styles. All of the characters are fighting for something better, but the fighting is shown to be against the character all of them have. They would all rather be doing something else. They hate that they have to keep fighting and question themselves on whether or not it's for the best. Even the bad guys have something else they'd rather be focusing on.

So then, what is the context of all this fighting? The oppression of Shinra's activities. It's sucking the life of the planet away, the source of all those funny personalities, which are even displayed in Shinra soldiers a few times. The Shinra constructs are the only real gloomy places, while everywhere else is either bright and full of character, or at least seems to have a character suppressed by Shinra. This makes the real enemy the Shinra constructs themselves and the resulting combat to destroy them. So then it makes sense why the combat would have a more "real" sort of art style than the story mode. It's a juxtaposition to highlight the point of the struggle.

The sad thing is the people think the characters acted like that in the game now. I want to tear my hair out every time I heard Cloud was emo. He is seriously not.

First game I played on my PSX, well technically it was the demo.

I'd buy this on PSN if it didn't have random encounters. Or I'd take a remake with non random encounters.

I remember picking this game up at the local game store without ever hearing of final fantasy before (I owned a genesis). I was so blown away.

Aeris's theme still makes me sad to this day. I remember when that happened I got all freaked out that I must of fucked up or something. Reset the game thinking I fucked up somewhere. Alas, no :(

Though always liked Tifa better, so not a total loss!

Fittingly, I found a GH copy of the game just now in a thrift store. Gonna bring it in for store credit at my local used game store, though. Already have a non-GH copy.

The impression I got from Cloud in the game was that he was kind of an aloof dope.... In a charming sort of way. Not exactly emo.

Sephiroth's build up is so genius. Clear articulated this best a while back, but the flashback demonstrating his power, the assault on shinra HQ, the midgar zolom...omg. And two of those three weren't even him.

One of my favorite moments of the game is one I rarely see mentioned; the night you go on the date with Aerith and for a short while everyone in the party is all together in the Ghost Square Inn at the Gold Saucer. It's right before you go to the Temple of the Ancients and it has this great feeling; like the characters know that this could be the last night things are how they are and for one small piece of time, they spend the evening together. For most of the game before this you only see your party, so to see them all together before things change completely is really great.

Aeris is only one of the possible candidates. It changes based on your decisions in game up to that point. I prefer to date Barret.

I know, I just like to pretend Aerith's date is the canon one since the emotional impact really isn't there during the other dates. The Barret date is pretty sexy, though.

That reminds me. The second time I played this game I killed a midgar zorum right after reaching the world map for the first time. Took a bit of grinding and the right materia/equipment combo but I managed to have cloud alone survive the fight to learn the enemy technique beta super early in the game. Just wrecked absolutely everything and was a free pass all the way to utai. I remember my friends cheering me on during that fight too. heh

This was back before I had internet access and I had more free time than brains, but if sephiroth could do it, so could i! :)

The invisible "points" system that tracks your progress with each character is heavily weighted towards her from the beginning too. You kind of have to go out of your way to get the other 3.

Final Fantasy VII gave me so much, and will be a timeless treasure for eternity. It is one of a few games which didn't stick to one genre, sooo many minigames, it had so much heart.

I know a remake is a bad idea for the sole fact that watching those 3D Models on the PSX just showed enough body movement to make us guess their facial expressions, when Cloud was sad, we saw the back of his head or the camera was zoomed out, when he was angry or was in battle, that ONE funny angry face he has showed itself.

When we saw some acting in an FFVII Scene, we imagined and let our emotions bloom for him when we played, a little similar to reading a book and emoting as you read.

The facial expressions have to be Directed soooo meticuously so as not to lose any possible interpretations the characters could have triggered in the original.

Example: The tech-demo showed Cloud jumping out heroically (You remember his face?) Well, as far as I remember, Cloud was just accepting that mission minimally dedicated. Those seconds alone were a FAIL for me, UNLESS he was attacked just the next second, but that is too cheesy!!! Aaahhh I like shouting my opinions here :) It's a tech-demo...

Unless all mini-games, emotions, and gameplay(combat Tsk...) are reproduced, we are in for our very first Square Enix farewell Anniversary lol

I LOVE YOU FINAL FANTASY 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope they get around to a Before Crisis remake one of these days. Was always kind of curious about it.

We'll never know for certain if FFXIII Agito didn't start out as a PSP port for Before Crisis... given some similarities, School, Gangs, etc...

Yeah, that huge serpent dead. What a moment.

Actually, the caves you go through straight after? Best place in the game for grinding the limit breaks. Had every then-available character's break (bar level 4, obviously) before even reaching Junon. Doesn't even take too long, relatively speaking.

Of course, doing that also robbed myself of the slow-burn build of getting gradually more powerful limit breaks, but it was my sixth time attempting to beat the game. I'd earnt the right to powerlevel a little.

LOL, I remember one playthrough grinding all the way to meteor rain before getting to Shinra tower. Then I found out the enemies wouldn't hit me hard enough to fill up the bar.

I always switch out party members, certain missions you get specific responses from certain characters. for example, the last time you fight Hojo I always put in Vincent and Red-XIII because Hojo experimented on both of them so I want them to get their "revenge" on Hojo.
I like to put Tifa and Barrett in the party right before the end of disc 1 when Aeris dies, I always felt those characters were the closest to Aeris. I like to put Barret in teh party during disc 2 when you have to save North Corel and then the people are grateful to him and finally forgive him.

This is the one FF of that era that doesn't stand out to me. Also the only one I've never replayed. Just..don't like it much. I think it was having come off of things like Lufia(2 more than 1 for me), FF5/6, and Chrono Trigger that made it feel just like another entry in a long list of triple AAA games rather than something momentous like for those who'd never even played an RPG. It most definitely has memorable moments, but I still get surprised by how many people on gaf scream "greatest game of all time!" and "remake please!" for this game.

Also honestly shocked (well, interested) by how many people were "surprised" at getting out of Midgar and "finding a whole world". For people who've never played an RPG I guess that makes total sense, but for those who had..really? You didn't expect an overworld with airship travel for an FF game by that point in time? Though I wonder how long it took the average player back then to get through Midgar. I don't remember it being very long at all so if that's really all the game was it wouldn't quite be an RPG haha.

Agreed.

It was a pretty nice reveal though once you exited Midgar. Pretty much the most climactic point of the game IMO.

I was having child wonder spasms during the Sephiroth fight as he casts supernova on me with the crazy awesome music playing. One of the best gaming times ever. Game was such a landmark. Isnt it the only game that has on the back of the box "best game ever made' in big letters? laaawd!!

Actually, in an interview in the FF Type-0 Ultimania book, it said that Type-0 was originally proposed as a follow-up to Before Crisis. Not sure if they meant story-wise, but I see how the concept is related, since Agito was originally developed as a mobile game as well.
