THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $900,000 IS PLEDGED BY TUESDAY APR 17, 8:05AM EDT.

Hmmmm.

"But we’re looking ahead to what we can do if you all back this project in force. At $1.25 million, the money will go primarily into making the world bigger, adding more maps, more divergent stories and even more music.

At $1.5 million, the world gets even bigger. You’ll have more adventures to play, more challenges to deal with, and a greater level of complexity to the entire storyline. We’ll add more environments, story elements, and characters to make the rich world come alive even more. We will even be able to bring Wasteland 2 to OS X for Mac lovers. And after $1.5 million the sky is the limit."

So basically, the game is looking to cost a million bucks at least, with a 1.5 year dev cycle (6 months of pre-production, 1 year of full development), and they're not interested in looking at any localizations or ports until they hit at least 1.5 million dollars. That's a pretty high goal and it might be a tad unrealistic. What is interesting is that if they get 1.25 million dollars, they're more interested in expanding the game first rather than making the game available to more people. That doesn't sound great to me...

MUST BE LESS NEGATIVE! IT LOOKS LIKE THIS PROJECT MIGHT ACTUALLY MAKE IT!!!! :D

So the $15 tier says the low price is exclusive to backers, and you also get pre-order exclusive DLC. Lulz. Are they going to sell this game at 30 bucks on Steam if it actually gets made?

Anyway, feel free to discuss this. Positive or negative. I hope they succeed with this, but Fargo's ambition seems to be pretty high here, so who knows...

Edit: Nirolak is going to get OWNED today! Rejoice Wasteland wanderers!!!!

I'd love to see this happen but I doubt it'll be very successful - certainly nowhere near the DF adventure game.

This is the best opportunity in a long time for the seemingly massive swaths of people lamenting the death of this style of CRPG to put their money where their mouth is. To quote the kickstarter pitch:

This is probably the last chance for a Wasteland sequel. We have tried to pitch this game multiple times to game publishers, but they’ve balked. They don’t think there’s any interest in a solid, old school type of game. This is our shot at proving them wrong. And more importantly this could help bring back an entire genre of RPGs. The power of the Indie scene continues and we see this as all part of a bigger trend of bringing control back to the developers.

Do it!

Boo duckroll, your scepticism ruins the fun :(

I'm going to back this. I'm more interested in the Avellone's one, but I want this to happen. The 1m mark is a bit scary, but I think Fargo note about the first Wasteland is right. If 100.000 bought the original wasteland, it would only take them to put 10$ to back this, doesn't sound unreasonable.

It helps that the game has been discussed and brought up for many years, so more people have been hearing from it. And old RPG fans has been quite vocal about wanting tactical and party based games, so I hope they manage to find a spot in their agenda of bashing Bioware to support this.

(BTW duckroll, there is a great interview with Fargo about this in RPS: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/03/12/post-post-nuclear-roleplaying-brian-fargo-on-wasteland-2/, if you want to put it in the op for extra info).

My guess is that it's going to be $20 on Steam. At least that's what I hope. $30 would be too much for people who aren't already backing it.

Anyway, I would love to put in $50 for the boxed copy, but I'm waiting for details on international shipping.

I chipped in 50, but might up it in the coming month depending on how some finances work out. I really hope it happens, but I do think they will need a major push.

Already in. It's a great idea, can never get enough of the post-apocalypse. Duckroll is right, though, Fargo is certainly aiming high with this. A little nervous about their odds of success, but really hope it gets funded.

In any event, the intro video is pretty funny.

"Did you do Angry Birds?!?"

"Would I fucking be here if I did Angry Birds?"

"Is this a billion-dollar franchise?!?"

"...probably not."

:lol

I never played the original - but old school PC RPGs are my hands down favorite genre in video games.
I pledged 30$.

The $50 to $150 rewards are so much better than Double Fine's. The rest are so so for their price, however.

Pledged $30, but I'm genuinely tempted to go higher.

Why the one month deadline? And what happens if April 17th comes around and they only have 800k? The whole thing just goes *poof*?

yes, it's a maximum deadline for Kickstarter if understand it right.

all money will be refunded.

I might pledge to this, though I never played the original Wasteland (absolutely LOVED the original Bard's Tale).

Will keep an eye on this all the same, and good luck!

Tentatively interested, at least. I'll reiterate my query from the locked thread:

So here's an admission of a secret shame: I've never played Wasteland. I'm very aware of its reputation, and I was always interested at about the right time, I just never... got around to it.

I need to rectify this.

How can I, legally? I don't think I've noticed it on any DD services, it's way too old to be reasonably available in shops, it doesn't seem to have ever been rereleased. Is there no option outside eBay (which is also not exactly straining under the weight of copies)?

I wonder if there's any chance of a DD version of the *first* game as a reward tier if we were to ask Fargo really nicely.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Want the $50 one but it seems a bit expensive for what it offers (considering the game's not gonna be some big budget production yet that's the standard retail price with only the map being a real extra) so will settle for the $15. Maybe if it included the full novel.

Wow at their target...well good luck with that Mr. Fargo. Never played Wasteland, is still a playable game?

Actually, we should re-purpose the tone of the OP into a "HELP PROVE NIROLAK WRONG" thing. Does anyone have any good suggestions so I can edit it in? :)

I am willing to risk 15 bucks. Doubt it can be worse than some PSN or XBLA games I bought for that price.

I think he's asking about the original. The original is a pretty solid game but not very "playable" today if you're not already used to the oldschool interface and balance of PC RPGs of that time. You will probably create a party, start the game, and die in the first 15 minutes before you get to any worthwhile location, and the majority of your experience will be text telling you how horribly your people died.

Why would you assume that? PC gaming and Europe go hand in hand. ;)

If that's the case, they should probably put more priority on localization of the game to European languages. I see nothing at all in their Kickstarter about other languages. Disappointing.

I hope its more akin to Fallout 1&2 by gameplay and UI.

well, he is right about this but Poland is the third by the number of likes on their Facebook page.

Fargo said that they will localize it in Polish at least.

I'm considering my backing an optimistic punt rather than getting in on the ground floor of a great project.

I'd love for this to happen and be great but I'm a little sceptical too. Not Nirolak levels, of course.

Is localisation really that big of a deal in Europe?
I see prioritizing localization as potentially limiting the amount and depth of texts - I think most fans would much rather see the money spent on content tan on localisation... Maybe I'm wrong though.
