ON AIR: GFW Radio 97.5 The Brodeo

Is there a big difference between being "fascinated" with someone else's abuse and laughing at it? Like I said, what if instead of of this being psychologically abused we were talking about someone being physically beaten?

I'm pretty sure it's a normal human reaction to laugh at things. Just because it's inappropriate, or painful, or whatever doesn't mean it can't be funny. Does this mean we're all cruising towards the Idiocracy future? I don't know... but it doesn't make you mean spirited, and he even admitted feeling bad about it.

Edit: I like what wondermega said about it. It's like examining the human condition... the brodeo way

Even though I really like Shawn, this is the kind of story why I kind of dislike him too.

Shawn is very big on the abuse of power. Anyone who follows him on twitter will know that he regularly post videos of cops abusing power, for example. Yet he seems to have no problem of an abuse of intellectual power. People who are social inept or intellectually slow, he has no problem absolutely ridiculing them or laughing at their pain.

He fucking should be embarassed, but he isn't because nobody around him is apparently willing to call him on it. Look, dude, if someone is being physically abused that is not something that is funny, as you recoognize. But someone that is being psychologically fucked with? That probably has more long term effects than any ass whooping anyone is likely to take.

I should note that I am not the most PC person in the world. I have no problem with an off colored joke or generalization. But when you are literally getting joy out of a socially or mentally inept person's pain (a literal individualized person) via schadenfreude, that is more than I can handle. Schadenfreude is fine when it is a douche bag that deserves to be taken down. But when it is someone who has very little power or position in society and is in some way psychologically or intellectually inept, it's fucking disgusting.

There is no need to laugh at someone who is gauche or stupid because someone else is pissing on them. That's fucking shameful. In that case, you are no better than someone that stands on the sidelines and laughs while someone is physically getting the shit kicked out of them. In fact, it is worse. Because at least the physical pains leaves a lot quicker than the social repercussions of being psychologically abused for other people's entertainment.

Shawn is an intelligent guy and I used to love his stories of his youth on GFW, but at least those I could view as "prodigal son" stories. I also think he will be a brilliant designer (especially since he gets ideas such as the intentional pacing of RE4 & 5's combat). But this is a grown ass man that gets joy out of intellectually and psychologically fucked up people's misery. That's not cool to me.

This has always been an aspect of Shawn that has bothered me. None of the other regulars on this podcast demonstrate this kind of mean spiritedness. And that pains me to say because, honestly, I think he is the most brilliant of the bunch.

Oh stop. You're the exact kind of online champion that most want to roll their eyes at. He didnt participate in any of these autistic floggings. The internet can be a cruel place. If you dont like it stay off of it. There was no material when cchan disappeared, but he kept coming back. Possibly doing jail.time for.reasons COMPLETELY UNRELATED to shit.on.the.internet. who.woulda thought?.except everybody

From the eps it seems like you are writing reviews again. Freelance?
Yeah, I'm pretty successfully self-employed at the moment. Most of the enthusiast writing I do (read: proper game reviews and event coverage and such) is for @GAMER, Best Buy's gaming magazine. I write a monthly MOBA column for GameSpy as well (speaking of which, I owe copy to my editor like today).

I also handle all of the Android tech/gaming coverage for Nvision, a digital magazine app for Droid tablets. So if you like mobile games and such, you can read my stuff there, too. And I'm helping Metacafe with their gaming coverage as well, though that's not really off the ground yet.

And I'm also the editor-in-chief of this year's E3 Show Daily and E3Insider.com, though I suspect that's not quite as relevant to most of you non-industry-professionals.

So yeah, that's what I do these days. END SHAMELESS SELF-PLUG!

Maybe this is a really awful thing to say, but you can be mentally disabled, have some perversions, even, and not be an aashole like Chris-chan. I used to work closely with lots of mentally disabled people, including one who did some crazy sex-related self abuse, and he was just an amazing dude.

Chris obviously deserves more sympathy due to his issues but of you've followed him at all, he really has some mean spirited stuff going on himself. I wouldn't participate in harassing him but I think observing it and even being fascinated or entertained by it is just fine.

I can agree with this, I listen to the Stern Show all the time, and most of their "wackpackers" have some sort of mental disability, some of them are cool about it, like Gary the Retard, and then others are total assholes, like Eric the ACK ACK Midget.

That's great and all, but what I really want to know is if you are going to play Guild Wars 2 for 800 hours, or 8000 hours.

Have you written about how dota 2 will impact the field of current mobas when it gets released? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that.

Awesome. I'll listen to this later this week, perhaps on my trip to Vegas.

I still will listen to old GFW Radio/1UP Yours episodes when I'm winding down at night. Strangely timeless.

I will listen to the new Brodeo tomorrow, but since there's no Comedy button thread on GAF I would encourage people to give that podcast a chance too if they haven't already. Last week's episode literally had me crying with laughter during the movie theater discussion.

There is a Comedy Button thread in OT somewhere but doesn't get much activity.

Who in there right mind would willingly subject themselves to Scott Browley.

It's amazing how likeable Anthony is when he's with the GFW guys. When he's with Scott or Arthur he's a totally different guy. The GFW crew elevate him, I feel.

Just finished - great listen. You guys have to do more.

I knew this was coming for a couple of weeks thanks to Scott not keeping his mouth shut.

I'm so happy it's two hours of awesome. I would have no problem funding a kick starter to get this podcast back on a regular basis.

haha good for you!

wait... when/why did you leave the IGN family? o_O. Got too many geekbox eps on podcast backlog lol.

Need to give that trivia show a try as well. ;P

I would love something like this even if it was only every two weeks, or even every month. A ~three-hour get together once a month would be great. It would be easier on everyone's schedules for something like twelve shows a year, right? And I imagine with fewer episodes there wouldn't be as big a concern regarding Jeff and Shawn's employers (what the employers think about the show).

This reunion really illustrates how great GFW Radio was (and is). It's best thing I've heard from any gaming podcast in the last year or so.

After discovering GFW was back, I then somehow had confidence enough to give a pretty girl on the bus my number and ended up walking her half-way home.

GFW is good for you. Thank you Brodeo!

So excited to listen to this. Always love the geekbox, but it's always nice to go back to the brodeo.

Now if only we could get a 1up yours reunion every once in awhile... ;)

The see you in 5 years at the end was a bit of heart breaker.

Really enjoyed the show, and it was nice to hear how much they all enjoyed their current jobs. Kinda killed my hope that one day one of them would pull a Madden and go back to writting and have a new spin on things after being in development.

Weekend Confirmed does the occasional 1up Yours reunion/semi-reunion show (last year's E3 show comes to mind), and while fun, they never quite capture the original spirit like this did. They always come off feeling like Weekend Confirmed featuring special guests Shane, John, Mark, Luke, etc. This, on the other hand, was just like a straight-up old-time GFW episode.

Largely because Shane and Luke were the backbone of that show and they are both pretty neutered now when they do that kind of stuff.

I think they're both really guarded about what they say now that they've both crossed the aisle. We loved Luke because he was absolutely unrepentant about how he felt about the state of the industry - now he can't really say very much.

On a separate note, this podcast makes me miss not only GFW but the entire 1up network, as well. Those three years or so when 1up was at the top of its game was the best time I've ever had as a gamer.

Seriously.

What an amazing time along with when Giant Bomb started up.

I dunno about RebelFM since I gave up on that but I always liked the Ryan/Anthony dynamic. It was pretty good when they were still at 1UP doing a post-GFW podcast and even that episode of the Geekbox he was on. Anthony doesn't seem too emo even on CB but I guess sometimes it's just easier to rag on him for not getting enough tail and stuff; kinda wish they would just move on from that since I feel like they spend like 15 minutes on it every week.

What an awesome surprise. While it sucks some of them can't go into specific criticism about games, the talk around it all (psychology and whatnot) is still as fascinating as it ever was.

Hit up Ken Levine's twitter! Let Shawn Elliot be heard!

I listened to this in hospital this morning.

Fantastic! So good to hear all the guys again, works so well.

Some great discussion, thought points and stuff I need to now look up but also hilarious!

I want to echo everyone here with a thank you an also to hope you guys take it on the chin and see if you can kickstart a few more of these.

A monthly Brodedo would just be fantastic. (with kickstarted mics etc)

After the shock and happiness calms down I'm flooding forward to discussing points from the show here, do we have links up yet?

Also I'm going to have to hunt that image of the SC5 created character.

they should use some comedy button money to get the guys mics to do a monthly podcast. not like comedy button is using it.

i heard on rebelfm that shawn posted his SC5 character, so im guessing its on twitter. if you find it post it here.
