Long-requested sequels that are monumentally disappointing

FLUDD and the Classic levels are some of the best things ever to grace Super Mario games. The only downsides are some of the fluff with collecting coins & some parts in regards to Yoshi. Otherwise Sunshine is a great game. I even prefer it to the cakewalk-Galaxy (1, 2 is the best 3d Mario)

Dreadful bosses, lazy padding (and it's not only the blue coins), glitchy levels, terrible swimming mechanics in a game that heavily features water. The fluddless levels are pretty good but the rest is incredibly mediocre for a Mario game...

Rocket-Knight-preview.jpg

That Rocket Knight abortion brought the series back and quickly buried it again.

Ugh, this. The demo turned me off. The gameplay was a bit enjoyable sometimes but it also felt kind of boring at the same time. Oh and they managed to fuck up the SHMUP gameplay by making it slow and not really exciting. Big let down.

Also, Sonic 4 Episode 1 fucking sucked. I'm not talking about just the physics but the levels themselves were terrible. A lot of the levels' content were rehashed stuff we've already seen a million of times but mixed in with Dimp's infamous level design style. (hint: PITS PITS PITS) And when the levels aren't rehashed, they still turned out to be horrible (Who seriously thought the Torch puzzle was a good idea for a Sonic game?). The game also felt really underwhelming.

I love the game personally (although I've also never played the original two Fallouts) but I remember some hardcore fans being really upset that 3 was a departure from the series.

I have such a love hate relationship with 3rd Birthday. On one hand, disappointment beyond belief (as a PE successor). On the other hand, I can't get enough of the gameplay.

Yoshi's Island DS if you consider it a sequel, ugh.

I didn't even dislike the babies, it was everything in that game that was utterly forgettable and just plain bad. The music was the biggest offender compared to the original YI.

For real. I'm starting to strongly doubt it will live up to the years of anticipation.

That's mostly the point. If Valve wanted to release a "vanilla" sequel, like HL2E1, this would have come out 2 years ago. There's no way Half Life 3 won't blow most people away.

No but seriously, Grand Theft Auto 4.

Disappointing for some maybe, but monumentally disappointing is a stretch.

Can someone explain to me why SSX 2012 was disappointing? Haven't played the game yet, but people were pretty optimistic before the game came out.

Banjo-Kazooie - Nuts & Bolts

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts: The humor and writing was spot on, but the gameplay was not. Maybe I just need to play it more, but I certainly don't "get" it at all. It didn't seem very fun, and it definitely didn't seem like Banjo.

And that.

Devil (and player) May Cry 2

Only two years between DMC1 and 2 though, normal series cycle.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Duke Forever is the king of this thread, but all signs pointed towards the game being pretty crap. My expectations were low, but even then the game delivered even worse.

Fallout 3 would probably be my pick. I can see the appeal of the game and don't think it's bad, but it's not Fallout and that was my problem. Bethesda simply doesn't make the kind of RPGs that are aligned with games like the original Fallouts, and I didn't like how they handled the lore. It played more like a weird Bethesda-esque Fallout spinoff. And that's fine, if you like that, but it wasn't the Fallout 3 I hoped for.

Thankfully Obsidian came along and righted many of Bethesda's wrongs. New Vegas was far from perfect, but it was more faithful to the spirit of Fallout/Fallout 2 than Fallout 3 was.

Do remakes count? Because if so I'd like to direct a big ol' FUCK YOU at TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.

Actually, I think it warrants two just to be sure. FUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOOOOU.

Duke Nukem
SSX
SFIV(I'm gonna catch flak for this one)
Vanilla Marvel vs Capcom 3
MGS4

None of these are on the same level as Duke Nukem though. Not even Street Fighter was that messed up. That one was still acceptable. SSX is definitely the best of this bunch and UMvC3 is a much better game than it's rushed predecessor.

Considering some of the other "out there" responses, I'm surprised nobody has said resident evil 5. And I don't think I really need to explain why as it's been a horse beaten past the point of recognition.

More like.

Syndicate. A Starbreeze game without any of the good points of a Starbreeze game? WTF

Their commitment to immersion in the first person perspective and different visual perception effects were in there, that stuff was all really great. Some of their good points were still very much in the game.

Absolute stinker, had none of the uniqueness or individuality of the first game. It was just a bland cover shooter with a huge empty city. Pretty to look at, nothing of substance below the surface though. Undoubtedly the biggest let down of this gen for me.

Yeh, unfortunately they do. There's a documentary online where they basically say Halo 2 was rushed and incomplete and everything that it shouldn't have been, and that Halo 3 is basically the real Halo 2.

So, not having time to do the game exactly the way you wanted = monumentally disappointing ?

OK

Doom 3 for me. I was expecting something completely different from the final product after having see the alpha build. It's still a good action game, I guess.

I seriously don't get the hate for Twilight Princess. It's a better version of Ocarina of Time.

It's a bigger, prettier version, I'll give you that. I still really liked it, though. I think Skyward Sword was more of a disappointment, considering the wait.

In any case, NiGHTS was the first game that came to mind before clicking on this thread, so I'll go with that.

Also -- Super Mario Sunshine is a great game with some technical issues (camera and framerate both suffer horribly in a few spots), but hardly monumentally disappointing. It's sandwiched between two really incredible and landmark games, but that doesn't take away from the great things it did in its own right. It did lack the polish you'd expect from a Mario game, though.
