La Mulana [WiiWare] NA/EU versions cancelled

30% Failure Rate
Not terribly surprising at this point.

Regarding La-Mulana, we have chosen to cancel publishing in North America and Europe for WiiWare.

No word yet on the status of the PC version. PC version still coming.

Scott Greig ‏ @gspawn
@nicalis will here at least be a pc release?

8m Nicalis, Inc. ‏ @nicalis
@gspawn Yes, and you can support @nigoro by purchasing the PC version.

Today is the day of stuff getting cancelled, it seems.
And in the case of Cavia's game it's like a non-comedic version of DoubleFine's hiring/firing last week!

I expect Steam still, no size constraints and lower barriers of entry. Though I wonder if eShop or Wii U is under consideration.

Noooo :(

Actually... Will it still come out in Japan on WiiWare? If so, hopefully there'll be a legal way to play Japanese WiiWare games on a North American Wii.

Edit: 3DS or Wii U would be nice, too. They did put too much work into it to just not release it...

This is the second time I've used this picture today. Not a good sign.

Release the game on some other service that happens to be for a console.

Man, I was just reading the nearly 3 year old NP article on this last weekend. Looked so good.

Not surprised.

I'm actually more interested in NightSky; the only original thing they've come up with IIRC. Everything else seems to be a port/remake.

The words slurred from my mouth with disbelief:

"are you gotta be-fuckin kiddin me"

I am not drunk. It just hit me like that.

The games already out on the JP WiiWare so I don't think the part in bold is an issue. Easier approval process and continued popular would make steam a good choice though.

The remake is being ported to PC now, and NIGORO are self-publishing worldwide, so we'll get to play it eventually.

That being said, fuck Nicalis. I can't believe people actually still want them to get involved with other peoples' games.

If Nicalis didn't put out 1 one downloadable game every 4 1/2 years, they might have gotten this out when the Wii was a bit hotter than it is now.

They're one of the slowest companies I've ever seen.

Why is it squarely their fault? Nigoro didn't finish the game when they said they would, and WiiWare slid at top speed into irrelevancy. This was the smart thing to do.

In the new twit they say say they "but we've waited for them to finish the game for over two years.". Who is "them"? Was Nicalis not porting it?

Japan already got it last June.
Wat. That makes it even more ridiculous. I know people here can get sensitive when others underestimate the efforts of those that have to localise games, and but come the fuck on. Nicalis are a joke company, it seems.

Does somebody know if someone who has a Japanese Wii can gift a game to an American/European Wii?

Nope - no cross-region gifting. You can't even gift between countries in the same region, IIRC.

WiiWare was already irrelevant by the time they announced the port... hell, it was barely relevant when Cave Story dropped.

Nigoro posted on their blog the other day that Nicalis hadn't responded to any of their messages in four months. Four months. That is completely unacceptable.

Ostensibly, Nicalis was only publishing the game outside of Japan and wasn't involved in development at all. It's been finished for a long time - it's been out in Japan for nearly a year now.

The decision to cancel publishing of La-Mulana was a tough call, but waiting two years for NIGORO to finish development has made it near impossible to sell sufficient units on Wii. The WiiWare market has a fraction of the players from 2008. The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009 and took a very steep decline. Players have moved onto other digital download platforms.

La-Mulana was originally developed without DLC in mind and, I think being their first console project, that NIGORO got a bit ahead of themselves and spent two years agonizing on getting the DLC sort of working for Japan. Unfortunately, it never passed Nintendo’s submission process in the US or EU with DLC in place. As the publisher, we’re responsible for various things, but development (which includes programming, art, music and design) is and always has been in the hands of NIGORO.

With the Wii U in the not too distant future and WiiWare sales almost non-existent, I had to make a call today. I wish them the best. They’re good game developers and good guys - Tyrone Rodriguez, Nicalis

IMO should have been canned long ago then.

Man, I kind of wish Nifflas hadn't gotten involved with these guys. They seem to be decently on the ball getting his stuff out, but their overall track record is not that hot.

So wait, his argument is "the Wii's been dead for DD for two years, which is why I waited until a year after the game's Japanese release to cancel publishing it"? Is this dude just thick, or what?

;_;

Tyrone's aware that Wii U will play Wii games too right? I wonder where this leaves the overdue Nicalis DSiWare games (Cave Story EU, Ikachan)? Probably canceled?

No surprise. Minimum sales threshold to be paid + declining Wii active userbase + ESRB costs (if the rating hasn't already been obtained) = not a good business proposition.

La-Mulana was ESRB rated for Wii 5 months ago. It's E10+.

I thought Nintendo also just did away with sales thresholds too? Or does that not apply to Wii/DSi and just 3DS/WiiU?

The sales threshold only ever applied to Wii, and it's still in effect apparently.
