Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

There's also a guy on Phandroid's forums claiming that his randomly turned up with no shipping info too, he posted an image but that could be a delayed ebuyer order. He claims it was ordered from Play, it's making me tempted to nip home on my lunch now.

yeah tnt might do that, another post stated that tnt left a delivery note without tracking info as well.

found this post at xda, i thought it's pretty funny:

As time has gone on however it is more and more evident that the delivery is a shambles and the lack of communication from Google is terrible - the final straw was when Pcworld (the one in the UK) has now got them available for delivery, so I've taken the plunge, ordered one and paid to have it delivered tomorrow morning before 12pm. The total price is £209.98 - about a £1 more than the one ordered from Google. When that comes that will be getting put on Ebay.

The reason why I can't wait for it is because of something which I don't think anyone has touched upon so far. It's not because it is essential to my job - it's something a lot more important than that.

I was sat on the toilet and reached across for some reading material (which as we all know is a blokes God given RIGHT) and realised that I had NOTHING to read or do. No Kindle. No Playbook. NOTHING. And that isn't right. Next time I was shopping I bought an Android Magazine in preperation but when the time came it didn't feel right, it felt so 2000's and to be honest I couldn't stand it anymore, hence the PCWorld purchase.

Google employees won't be bothered about that though, I'm sure they are well and truly entertained in their Google HQ bogs but to us men who are mere mortals, having some quality me time in the lav is the only time we ever get to relax.

Google, if your reading this PLEASE pull your finger out and sort out this mess. Men AND Women around the world are asking for your help. Don't punish them any longer.

6:45am - my device is out for delivery (NYC). hope to get this early so that i can head into the office at a reasonable time. go UPS, go.

Just ordered mine (UK) without reading up on anything lol. Should be here tomorrow, hope i's not a dumb buy - can't really see why I need a tablet anyway.

You realise Flash works just fine as long as you install the APK right? On the stock JB browser. You just can't download it from the Play Store.

EDIT Whoops. I was referring to the GNexus. But I'm sure if you install the stock browser APK and the flash Install APK on the Nexus 7..... Bingo. If anyone wants to try this let me know :)

Any of you Nexus 7 owners tried this yet? Because Stock browser on the GNexus > Chrome. And quick controls on a tablet will be way better than on a smaller phone screen.

From my experience it crashes on the G Nexus with Jelly Bean in both the stock and Dolphin browser. Firefox however works. I've seen videos of the Nexus 7 where people were using different browsers and it was working so I assume it's the same deal as the G Nexus.

Mine shipped yesterday and has actually been scheduled for early delivery today. I'm guessing that's Google's doing since ups would have just left it in their facilities until it was supposed to arrive.

I've not seen any crashes myself yet, haven't watched a great deal of flash content as it's only an occasional thing, maybe a couple if times a week. Hmmm. I wonder when Nexus 7 UK orders are gonna start shipping...

Just been home on my lunch and no TNT card. I guess 16gb models aren't shipping yet, that or they're doing it on region, I bet the Midlands is last!

Out for delivery. Yay. What is everyone doing first for those of us who got screwed by Google?

Recommended apps to buy using the credit?

Dunno if you are looking for games, and I've yet to confirm how well it works on the Nexus 7 yet...but one of the few things I've spent money on in Android is Farsight's Pinball Arcade.

Edit: Google search doesn't bring up any specific complaints (and one guy who loves it) so this is probably safe. I just wanted to put that caveat in because well, new model and all...

Lol, some people even ordered last night and got their shipping emails.

Out of curiosity, what bank does your credit card use?

My order from Adorama arrives today. I tried to cancel my order with Google; it took 35 minutes to speak to a human. She gave me instructions on how to refuse delivery enough to get a refund. I'll go ahead and post them.

Google's service is awful. There's no reason that you order on the 29th and don't have a Nexus coming to you today or Saturday or whatever. Never again. They should issue a public apology for being so incompetent. Whoever is in charge of their distribution should be fired.

Anyway, here's the instructions for refusing delivery:

Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today.
If there is anything further we can assist you with, please feel free to
reply directly to this email or visit our help center at

http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/request.py?contact_type=contact_policy&policy=hardware

At this point it is no longer possible to cancel this preorder. Preorder
shipment processing on your order has begun, which means that our shipping
provider is moving forward with delivery preparation.

Our expedited order fulfillment process ensures that packages are
delivered quickly, which also means that there is a very short window of
time to cancel an order prior to our shipping provider moving forward with
delivery.

I recommend leaving a prominent note on the door to let our shipping
provider know that you're refusing delivery of the package. In some cases
our shipping provider has returned packages if their drivers see a note
for refusal of delivery. The note should include the following:

- Refuse delivery-Return to Sender
- Include signature
- Include tracking #

If your package is returned due to refusal of delivery, your order will be
cancelled and refunded within 2 weeks.

If the package is successfully delivered in spite of the delivery refusal
note on your door, you can still refuse delivery of unopened packages
within 5 days of delivery. To do so, contact our shipper directly to
schedule a pick up of your package. Make sure to let them know that the
pickup is specifically because you're refusing delivery.

IMPORTANT: Don't open the package. Our shipper will not allow refusal of
delivery for opened packages.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know

I'm in Canada, so I have a TD Canada Trust Visa. Never had issues ordering from them before, large and small purchases always go through.

rabhw, most Canadians seem to be in the same boat. I know I am. We always get screwed over. = \

It makes no sense though. They are literally shipping orders at random, with seeming high priority to people ordering today over people who ordered weeks ago...

There are Canadians ordering this morning that already have tracking numbers, how is that even possible? How are the orders not places into a fucking queue and then processed in the order they are received?

Oh damn.

I was wondering because I heard of another guy having issues and he used a Chase card.
I used a Chase card and im still waiting on a charge so Im wondering if that was the cause for anything.

Yup. Order today, ship today! Pre-order 3 weeks ago, ship whenever we feel like it!

I'm also reading that Canadians that ARE getting their orders shipped, are getting them via UPS Ground (regular shipping) instead of the 2-day shipping that Google charged us for.

And there's apparently not a damn thing anyone can do about it. If Google just plugs their ears - aka refuses to answer their phones or respond to emails - eventually people will just give up right?

Fucking disgusting, seriously.

I just saw that too. They paid for 2 day but got the regular 5-7 day. What a joke.

Google make some great stuff, but I'm not surprised at their handling of this. They seem to have real issues seeing things through to completion :p Seems even their customer service is a work in progress.

Since Google needs help with how this works I'll provide a handy guide:

1. Announce preorders on Play Store
2. Announce cut off date for first shipment (i.e. "those who preorder before this Friday will receive the first batch of shipments.")
3. Announce a release date a couple days before when you know you have enough units to fill all preorders you said you would and your retail channels.
4. Ship all preorders a day before shipping all retail orders.
5. Announce availability on release day and champion how successful your product was.
6. Promise to fill all preorders in the order they came in.
7. Actually fulfill promise.

And everyone is happy. It's not that hard.

My N7 is out for delivery. Woo-hoo!

And yeah, Google has handled this badly, but I wonder if it wasn't also partly Asus' fault. The pics of shipping boxes I saw at retail looked to be from Asus.

The rumour going around is that the only way brick & mortar shops have their N7's is because Asus messed up and sent the tablets out before getting the go-ahead from Google.

Google are apparently REALLY annoyed at Asus about it, as it's making Google look poor in shipping their tablets.

Who cares what the rumor is, or if Google is annoyed. At this point, if they care at all about their online customers who have been screwed, they need to start acting. They should immediately refund all the shipping and handling fees -- especially since folks now are getting same day shipping e-mails -- and they should double the Play store discount.

Anything less than the two aforementioned actions, and I have to assume that Google simply doesn't give a fuck that they've upset their customers.

Did the people who are getting delivery notices order 8GB or 16GB models?

Suspiciously, I think all of the orders posted about on MobileSyrup are 8GB. And with retailers only getting 16GB, I think it's entirely possible they shafted everyone who pre-ordered and instead gave those units to stores. If the reason for the apparent delay is that we have to wait for a whole round of devices to be manufactured despite ordering first, then...fuck.

I feel like calling my bank and telling them to block the payment and just order from pc world UK

I'm tempted to do the same, except all of the retailers in my area are out of stock, so it wouldn't be doing me any good at this moment, but fuck Google.

I was going to say "I'm going to demand my shipping charges get refunded if they ship my N7 with UPS Standard", but there isn't even someone to make that request to. Their phone support is unable to do anything at all, they are totally powerless. All they can do is forward requests to some other mystery department, who may or may not (likely not) get back to you -- ever.

That'd be great if their phone support could do anything. The only response they can give anyone is "we can't see specifics of your order, but we're shipping them out, we swear!"

What good is phone support if they can't deal with a customer's order directly? They may as well not have a phone number...

Pretty sure a good few people have called their banks to try this and the bank has said that they can't block it.

It is being suggested that they won't carry on with the order if they try to charge the account and the money isn't there...

IF I get my Nexus and Google hasn't forgotten about my order, the first game will be The Dark Knight Rises by Gameloft...

Barring it doesn't suck.

I have feeling that Google shipped my order, but forgot to tell me. *sigh*

I'm firmly convinced that their customer support is just a Google Voice AI designed to give people something to do until their device arrives.

got screen flickering at low brightness settings. it happens most frequently in the maps app, maybe because of some interactions with the gps/compass. wonder if it's a software issue?

on the flipside, compass-oriented street view is fucking awesome

also, I was able to replicate the screen ghosting, but only at high brightness settings / dark backgrounds. luckily, it's probably easiest to see on the brightness adjustment screen. turn up the brightness, wait a few seconds, turn 90 degrees and the bottom bar will still be noticeable. I doubt this will be an issue to most people. oh, and the background gradients in the settings app look like ass at anything other than min brightness

will find more things wrong play with it more later tonight

Anyone pimp their Nexus out with a Mame emulator and a PS3 gamepad working via bluetooth? Is this possible?

I'm using free credit card rewards cash to pay for this and the above would be a beautiful thing.

On a whim during some downtime on Saturday I went to trade in Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 to Gamestop, and asked if they had any Nexus 7s.

Guy said they had one in the back, but it was a preorder. He said if he didn't come in to pick it up, I'd be next on the list.

Sure enough, the guy didn't pick it up. I'll be the proud owner of a shiny new Nexus 7 after work. Woohoo!

I'm running Mame on mine with a Bluetooth controller connected to my nexus 7. No issues other than the small screen. This is where I miss the HDMI connection and / or dock.
