Nexus 7 |OT| Google's $199 7-inch tablet by Asus

Google Now allows you to do that? Mind blown

Google search (via voice or otherwise) always did math equations, talking them out is new though. heh

Yeah I was just thinking about what to test it out with. So I tried a short one. Then I started trying some stupidly long ones just rambling off the top of my head, and it would speak dictate the problem out on screen in text, then show the problem numerically and speak the answer. lol funny stuff.

Google Now is damned creepy in an awesome way. Every morning when I wake up, since installing Jelly Bean a few weeks ago, I get little notifications that pop up on my Nexus before I leave for work telling me stuff like '47 minutes drive time (5 minutes delay) to work via I-95 - Traffic: Normal'.

Not only did I not tell it where I work, I also don't even have GPS on. The scary part is that it knows where I work and that 47 minutes was dead on.

All I did was opt into Google Now initially.

For a $200-250 price point, its a no brainer if you're looking for a budget tablet. Obviously comparisons to the iPad will be made, but I see myself getting a lot more use out of this than I have my Kindle Fire.
The fact that you can even compare the two considering the price difference is a great thing.

Quick question, probably a dumb one.

I see that they're pushing google play with this. Does that mean all my music will be streaming? What if I'm on a plane or am not near WiFi, is there a way to house my music on the device as well?

I'm sure the answer is yes, I just want to make sure.

Does this go for Magazines and stuff too, can I buy a magazine through google play and read it on a plane?

All of Google's media services have offline pinning. Music in particular doesn't allow you to pin your whole collection though it's technically possible too. You can pin playlists and when you play a song it automatically saves the stream offline so you don't have to stream it again. If you choose to use Amazon's MP3 service they do this as well. Magazines you can setup to automatically download when there is a new issue too.

You can download your music/movies/books/magazine on to the device, although I'd recommend you keep your music on your phone or portable mp3 player if space is going to be an issue.

You can pin all that stuff which caches it on the device. You can also add files directly to the internal storage.

Wow, reading comics on this thing is 100 times better than the Fire.

On the Fire, I always had to do pane by pane view so I could read the text. On the Nexus 7, the text is clean. This alone makes my purchase worth it!

what staples where? All mine say they might get some today to see tomorrow.

Hazleton, PA

They told me they got in one extra. The rest were for reserves. They sold that extra.

Google changed the text in their Help section:

It went from:
We're now shipping Nexus 7 preorders. All US and Australia preorders are scheduled to ship by July 17th.

to

We're now shipping Nexus 7 preorders. Many US and Australia preorders are scheduled to ship by July 17th. UK and Canada preorders have also begun shipping in waves.

Ugh

Has anyone in the UK heard anything from Google yet?

I ordered mine on June 27th, shortly after pre-orders opened. I contacted Google on July 12th to ask what was going on and when the expected ship date is. I've heard nothing whatsoever.

Great thanks for the responses everyone! I ordered mine earlier today, can't wait for it! Really looking forward to reading comics on it.

I wonder who's to blame for this botched launch, Google or Asus? I'm happy I was able to track one down here in Canada at retail, I'd be raging pretty hard otherwise. Not even a shipment email yet, lol. I can't even cancel it if I wanted to, I will have to refuse the package when it comes. Such a clusterfuck of a launch.

just received my tablet in NYC. i've been in an air conditioned apartment the whole day waiting for the package that the heat emanating from the box surprised me for a second. i didn't realize that it's nearly 100F outside at the moment.

so far it's a...tablet. i'm coming from an iPad 3 and this is my first Android device. already installed readability, pocket, netflix and watch espn, as well as syncing Chrome with its desktop brethren.

now, it updates.

Yeah, I never used Google for calculations so the fact that NOW can handle equations is awesome. And man, I wish that Comixology used Google Wallet, causes I'd just use the entire $25 credit on comics :l

Also most of the play content isn't even available to people not living in America right? So I'll use it on whatever I can get. Most likely comics.

The only thing I'm not overly impressed with is the speakers. Granted, if I'm watching Netflix, etc. I'm going to use my earbuds, but while the speaker sounds clear, its not very loud at all.

Hopefully this can be fixed in a future software update. Otherwise, I am extremely pleased. Great device, can't wait to load up some emulators!

After typing this above, I just got an email to say mine has been shipped via TNT!

The speakers are definitely terrible. But I have an iPad 3 and this and already I'm looking forward to using this for reading/browsing in bed. It's just not a very good laying-in-bed device. This seems like it'd be perfect for that.

I really wish they had an LTE version of this 'cuz that would've been perfect. If Apple intros a light 8" iPad this fall with LTE, I fear I might jump to that.

Yeah, Im going to use the majority of my credit on comics too. I dont know of anything else on Play that I would want (that isnt free, of course)
Yeah I already used up $21 bucks on some tpb collections lol. I love this. I like the idea of supporting my local shop but driving out there and the space involved with collecting single issues makes it less than desirable unfortnately

When did you order? If any other shops get stock in, I'm cancelling the Google order as this is taking the piss. Someone on XDA just put up a photo of them ordering on the 11th, shipped on the 12th. Google have NO clue on how to handle this.

Maybe/maybe not. It doesn't seem Google had any rhyme or reason when it came out how they shipped out the devices.

EDIT: Maybe try a local Sams Club?

Alright so this has been bugging me in regards to comixology. Is the guided view crapping out for anyone else? I'll enter guided view to read the panels but when it completes a page and goes to the next
, the screen will just go completely black and I'll have to back out of the comic and reload it. Is this happening to anyone else?

I guess if I don't get my shipping email by tomorrow, I'm fucked? Ordered the 16 GB on 7/6.

Google already covered their asses and changed the "all preorders will ship by 7/17" to "most preorders" so its still open enough that we may or may not ship.

And your the third person Ive seen that ordered a 16GB on 7/6 and have nothing to show for it. Schlep, you, and me.

after importing some of my ebook collection, i can safely state i'll be reading on this device far more than the iPad3. the screen is dense enough to make text appear nearly as crisp as it does on the retina iPad, and the form-factor is an absolute winner. easy to hold with one hand and comfortable to boot with the rubber, dimpled back.

And once the iPod mini is released sales of this thing will drop - You win this time Mr. Jobs!

My local Staples showed that they had limited availability, so I called. They told me that they were sold out and wouldn't get any for several weeks. On a whim, I drove over there to double check. They had 4 in stock that they had received this morning, so I nabbed one. So don't trust them if they say that they are out!

Really excited to play around with it. This is both my first android and my first tablet. Down the rabbit hole we go!

Got mine - haven't done anything other than install Kindle. Need to play with it later tonight. Screen is nice but doesn't seem much better than the Kindle Fire imo. Obviously the iPad 3 kills it in that department.

I'm interested in owning an Android device for development purposes and to see how JB behaves ahead of potentially jumping ship away iOS in the phone space come Sept/Oct.
