He had me at Blu and Gibbs, on the same album, damn yo!

Edit: Also I need to reiterate how ill that SAS EP, shit has absolutely no filler.

my problem with channel orange is that its just fucking boring to listen to. i left it on during work a few times and i cant get into any songs besides pyramids, super rich kids and white (which isnt even a full song).

theres like, what 20 songs or something? shoulda just spent time making like 10 great songs instead of like 20 meh ones.

yeah, the lyrics are corny as hell

there's like 12 actual songs on there not 20, but it's okay I forgive yall for not having good taste every now and then. I like me some doom here and there and I expect yall to forgive me for that.
Edit: Also I need to reiterate how ill that SAS EP, shit has absolutely no filler.

isn't it like 5 or 7 songs? I'd expect something that short to have no filler.

After all the praise Skelethon got I decided to revisit it and give it a deep re-listen. I must say I really liked the beats and the overall tone of the album, but Aesop's delivery definitely keeps me appreciating it. At times I had to question whether the words that were coming out were not in fact some sort of alien jibberish. It's not that I don't appreciate lavish allegories and metaphors woven into rap, but I just feel that his pace and delivery is not at all suited for speedy multi-syllabic rap. I can't decipher the language that's coming out of his month into words half the time. Many Aesop fans think people just don't appreciate the intellectual stimulus of his raps, but I think the biggest hump over trying to listen to Aesop is trying understand a guy who sounds like he's rapping with "a mouthful of donuts" -Esch

...I'm gonna keep the album though, maybe understanding him will become easier over time, but I can't help feeling like if it were Cage rapping this might be one of my favorite albums this year.
here are my impressions

Honestly i have not listening to CO nearly enough to form a solid opinion. but when I did listen I had the urge to skip tracks & FF because it was so monotonous and boring. Nostalgia Ultra is leagues better. more diverse production, its shorter and easier to listen to. most albums shouldn't go past 40 minutes imo, only use your absolute best stuff.

Late to the party but Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 is dope.

Also upon further listenings Life is Good isn't good, it's great. No Introduction is still amazing after a thousand listens haha while Summer on Smash still sucks.
Imagine if rappers released Illmatic length albums more often. If Life is Good were 4/5 tracks shorter it would be that much more amazing.

Which five are you cutting? Summer on Smash of course.

Outside of Lost, Pyramids, TBY, and Bad Religion, I can do without CO. Boring is a good word for it. I couldn't bring myself to buy it for three bucks, though Spotify is mostly to blame for that.

What's the word on Chuuwee's CHEZ! tape? Worth listening to?

Went back to listening to Watching The Throne and I thought Crown Me King was leagues better. Think I'll enjoy it?

Lamar has teamed up with BET's Music Matters for the tour. Big KRIT next month and Kendrick Lamar in September. Good year for me.

Has anyone here ever listened to UGK? I'm curious of what gaf's opinion of them is.

Haha Yes. They have some great albums.

I bought Skelethon after listening to Channel Orange a couple of times off of Frank's tumblr. I can do without it, although I love the last section of Pyramids.

That Blu & Exile EP should have been free, we get way more significant packages for free constantly. Feel like it would have built some goodwill for Blu since he is constantly fucking up.

Still bought it though, Blu stan and all that.

Just listened to Nas and am currently listening to Aesop.

Nas wasn't bad. It's no illmatic obviously but that isn't a fair comparison.

Aesop Rock is pretty interesting so far. I could see someone not liking it because it's a bit experimental/abstract but if you're wanting something new in hip-hop it isn't a bad listen if you don't mind complex and abstract lyricism. Sort of similar to Doom lyrically but not necessarily as good.

The production in Aesop's album reminds me of something El-P would do. Impressive that he produced it himself. Pretty good underground/indie hip-hop.

I wouldn't compare the two albums together since they both have two different vibes.

I think it'd make more sense to compare Killer Mike and Nas' new album considering they are both hard core hip-hop albums.

Usually i'm biased towards Atlanta rappers but Nas' album might have possibly topped Killer Mike's for me.

Agreed. First three tracks grabbed my attention then tuned I out.
On another subject, Cartoon and Cereal has really grown on me. It's more subtle and I guess because of that not as good as most stuff on Section.80, but it's a great song.

its cool, different strokes and all that. im happy for frank though, guy is talented and deserves the sales and goodwill.

i'm not gonna lie i thought hopsin was pretty wack when he first came out - even though i did appreciate his skills - i just didn't like him. but just listened to ill mind 5 or w.e and it's pretty raw! hearing him talk shit about everything was dope, he put it all together nicely. that's some thought out shit, not slapped together verses and a beat.

I think the hate for hopsin here is sort of strange.

He's not legendary or anything but he doesn't flat out suck. I'd listen to him over Weezy tbh.

I'd rather listen to any song off of the Carter 1 than anything Hopsin's ever made. That last video sounds like a D.A.R.E. PSA.

Man I miss my dawgs
Many nights club poppin'
Many nights we were blowing trees
Many nights we were hustlin'
Man I miss my dawgs
Me and you through thick and thin
Me and you through the very end
For only you I'll sin again

I'd love to keep acting like I hate Life Is Good because the pouting and feet stomping from fans is so enjoyable, but fuck it heres a real breakdown

1. No Introduction: A solid if boring intro track. The kind of thing you enjoy the first time but never really enjoy again. 6/10
2. Loco-Motive: A reminder that Nas remembers illmatic, even if you young fucks don't. 10/10
3. A Queen's Story: Up until Nas starts rapping, this seems like it's going to be a giant skip. But once Nas comes in things start to come together. Production takes some time to really make sense to me but once it gets going, shit is hype. 8/10
4. Accident Murderers: Not as hype on this one as others, but it's definitely a solid track. 7/10
5. Daughters: After stupidly listening to HHgaf when this leaked, I didn't bother to listen to it. I'm kind of glad because it's fresh to me. Great track, Nas manages to be thoughtful without sounding corny. 9.5/10
6. Reach Out: Don't like MJB, don't like the overused piano loop, and the beat is boring... this is the low point of the album. 2/10
7. World's an addiction: A little over dramatic, between Hamilton getting all weepy angsty on the hook, production that sounds lifted from some "end of the world" documentary, and Nas getting a little corny with some of his lyrics, this one is a "listen once and don't hate but don't feel like listening again". 6/10
8. Summer on Smash: Swizz is great behind the boards, and dogshit behind a mic. That said, this is the "club single" and to me it works, especially after it gets going. I like the beat a lot. Swizz knocks off a few points though. 7/10
9. You wouldn't understand: Another track that sounds like awful dogshit until Nas gets going. Once he does the beat starts to find itself and it sets up a vibe I'm digging. By the end of the song I wanna hear it again. 8.5/10
10. Back When: Not the strongest track on the album by a longshot, but there is something enjoyable about it. 8/10
11. The Don: definitely a love it or hate it track. Beat is a mess, but somehow Nas pulls it together and makes it way more hype than it should be. 8/10
12. Stay: Audio nyquil, it's not a terrible song, it's just boring as fuck to me. 4/10
13. Cherry Wine: Was never an Amy Whinehouse fan, but this one comes together better than I thought it would. Nice production, Amy is tolerable. 8/10
14. Bye Baby: Unless you a basement dwelling virgin or a fucking sociopath, you should be able to relate to the emotions behind this song. And best of all, Nas never comes across as emo or salty or whiny. It's just a nice snapshot of how it feels after you've worked through those post breakup emotions. 9.5/10
15. Nasty: The shit that started the Nas Cycle, with good reason. 9.5/10
16. The black bond: If this wasn't 2 minutes long, I'd probably skip it. The production is interesting but it's the kind of thing I normally don't enjoy hearing repeatedly. 7/10
17. Roses: I really love the beat, the hook I'm not too sure about. Love some of the lines in this song too. 9/10
18. Where's the Love: Not a fan of cocaine80s, beat is above average but theres nothing significant about this track. 7/10

Without letting Reach Out and Stay ruin the overall score, I'd put it at an 8.5 or so

Illmatic>It was Written>Stillmatic>Life is Good>>>>all his other shit.

Channel Orange has grown on me a lot since it first came out. Not sure I'd put it above Nostalgia, but it's definitely one of my favorite albums this year. Not boring at all imo.

To be honest, Live From the Underground is my disappointment of the year.

Siddx down all we need is Toku and Kams to come out and say it is great. I would add Shinobi but he was too obvious saying it is worse than Nastradamus.

what the fuck? LFTU a disappointment? What were you guys expecting from a little known rappers major debut? Shit was good, other than a few hooks.
