Why isn't DS already dead as it is in Japan? NoA should kill DS in order to improve 3DS sales.

3 million in 3 months i think...

right, which if the 3m is correct (guessing it's higher now) is the equivalent of pulling 250,000 full priced $60 boxed games worth of revenue a month. a 250k boxed title would be ranking pretty high each of these last three months. Surely top 2-4.

Looks like from Jan - Sep this year Wii will only manage to shift 1 million units.

Last year in Jan - Sep it sold more in that period than it did over Oct - Dec, so I guess a sub 2m year is on the cards for Wii.

Sleeping Dogs is going to bomb so hard. I'm worried about Darksiders 2 as well. I just don' tthink many people are interested in buying games at full price anymore except for special occasions.

Can we really blame people?

Games get cheap so fast these days, so unless you really feel a product is worth $60, it makes zero sense to buy it day one.

Chances are high there are at least 10-20 great and/or very popular games now available for $10-$30 out there that you haven't played, and they actually seem to be the ones that are charting right now.

jesus christ dead island

either the video game industry is dying or (more likely) retail is mattering less and less every month

still, 203k for the #1 console -- you can tell it's year 7 of this cycle

Well my local Costco has basically gotten rid of the videogame section. They are only selling Xbox 360 Kinect bundles and nothing else, no games.

I can't blame them. I think Darksiders 2 and Sleeping Dogs will both be 20 dollars on Black Friday so I'm waiting. It's just that the industry can't sustain these games with people who do that. This also I think is playing a big part in what's wrong with the 3DS and moreso Vita.

price drop recently happened. nintendo's clearing out stock at this point. it'll be a non-issue by 2013, after pokemon bw2 (last hurrah for the ds) and nsmb2 (relaunch for 3ds) drop.

Good games have been releasing on psn and xbla this month.

Anyways Darksiders 2/Sleeping Dog will be interesting next month.

I have a feeling that Darksiders 2 will do OK; the first game is well liked and THQ has been doing a decent job of building hype for it (not like they have a choice right now!). Sleeping Dogs is a real wild card; with the whole True Crime origins not factoring into it outside of the hardcore, Squenix is really going to have to sell the setting and the hand-to-hand in order for it to stand a chance. For sandbox games in that same style, there's Rockstar's games and Assassin's Creed, then there's Saints Row, and then there's everything else. I think it should be safe to say that Squenix does not want to be in the last tier.

I live in the states. Sorry for the negativity, just shocked at that list.

10/10 are Western developed
8/10 have "realistic" art styles
The same 8/10 don't have a very diverse color palette
I need to look at the list again but I don't think there are more than 3 genres represented
Pretty sure all 10/10 are sequels and/or rereleases

Just not a very diverse list. It's no wonder that every game that gets announced looks the same.

It is the summer so some tentpole games like NBA2K and COD are going to represented. I do think it looks bad. But if you look at the weekly charts in Japan, it's not any better in terms of new IP and a ton of sequels and similar genres. If you combined these sales numbers with digital, I think you'd see that it's not so bad here.

Oh, I totally agree. And we're not even considering digital on that front, where there are tons of excellent games for cheap.

I could see Darksiders 2 hitting the Borderlands "successful mid tier" niche, which is increasingly hard to hit.

Sleeping Dogs seems more likely to bomb.

All mid tiers struggle these days, for years now but it's getting worse.

even borderlands itself is arguably now triple a (hype-wise) with borderlands 2.

For what it's worth, reading it as as an increase/decrease in weekly sales month over month would give:

360: Under 205K (which would put the 203K for that given in the OP just within range)
3DS: Over 124K
DS: Over 120K
Wii: Under 76K
PSP+Vita: Under 80K

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yes, if both 3DS and DS did the same in July, probably she's referring to weekly average ( June was a 5-weeks month, while July was a 4-weeks month).

DS reached sturation point in Japan a long time ago, here in America the DS is still a cheap and easy gift for the kids.

Yep. I see moms all the time asking for a DS whenever I go to a store. They have no idea the 3DS exists... This is still probably a sizeable market, lol.

Too pessimistic in my predictions this month. :(

Is the month/month increase with regard to the 3DS referring to weekly average or just absolute numbers?

The list means that software sales are abysmal. Those consistent sellers that don't usually make the top 10 are on there.

The emperor needs to head back inside and find some "new" clothes and fast.

Mid tier I would say is 1-2 million. Borderlands is not mid tier.

Borderlands actually ended up at 6 million copies.

I suspect Borderlands 2 will be one of those titles that sucks up all the air from everything else.

What the fuck @ the top 10. It feels like the gaming industry is dying in the US. No one is buying anything but CoD, sports games, kid/licensed games, or zombie games. We need new consoles, and NoA needs to kill the DS already.

Fun Fact: Batman and Spider-Man SKUs comprised half of the Top 10 individual SKUs for July.

Also: Only two individual SKUs were 300K or better. No other SKU managed more than 88K.

Probably won't even be #1 release month though, with Madden being in the September reporting period.

I don't feel the two statements are irreconcilable though.

In May 2010 Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy killed a lot of things. Here, Borderlands 2 would be the game killing things that aren't itself or Madden.

And that would be extremely short sighted of them. Trust me, if they could somehow wish all of those DS sales over to 3ds, they would.

Edit: I got beat.

Still don't see how it's killing them, especially with the XL coming out this month along with NSMB2. Plus the 3DS went up this month.

Sure but it's killing their new system, I mean how short sighted you have to be to not figure this out.
In the same way the PS2 was killing the PS3 in the early days? I think NOA'll discontinue the DS this year in America and by the next year they'll have a strong lineup to support the system here. Meanwhile the DS is easy money for the company.
