Game Informer October Cover: Super Mario Bros. U

Don't care. Obviously SMB 2's levels are different but they still accommodate all four characters just fine in different ways, they could figure out a way to do it with a mainline Mario game but they won't. I don't care if the current traditional Mario level set needs a slight shake up in order to make it happen or if they would be better off just putting her in with the same abilities and keeping the standard level designs, either way it's lazy that she's not in the game. End of story.

More willful ignorance. Shoehorning different types of characters into the game is not the way they wanted to do it, and it's not a lesser game for not being playable with tons of different types of characters that can float or double jump or teleport or whatever. Sticking Peach in there would make it a worse game for Mario, because it would no longer be able to be designed entirely around him. And now you want her in there as basically a skin, so I'm going to take your moving of the goalposts to mean that you really do understand what I and others are saying but you don't want to admit to being wrong.

ITT: Heavy can't understand how other people can have different opinions and views than him.
It was all said from my own personal perspective. Don't take single sentences out of a larger post when said post was clearly the author's own opinion on the subject.

I'm not trying to force my views on anyone. We're all anonymous here, why would it matter to me what you like or don't like?

How could anyone enjoy a Mario game, guys?

Heavy has proclaimed us in the minority, guys!

This isn't what I said at all. Completely stretching my words here.

I'm the one who should come to terms with it? Look at those replies and say that again.

This is a Game Informer cover thread, not just about platformers. I figured there might be something more inside, a hint or previews of what else was in this month's mag, so I clicked it then saw that post and replied. Had no idea it would lead to that barrage.

GW2
Mass Effect
Deus Ex HR
Diablo 3 if it wasn't awful
Sleeping Dogs
Far Cry 3
Borderlands 2

That's my style. Can't imagine putting any significant time into a platformer when these types of games are out there. No way I'm in a minority with that opinion.

your style of game includes a stipulation that you'd like a game but only if you didn't dislike it?

Anyone have their copy yet? Make sure to stop by the Halo OT in the community forum and tell us about the Halo 4 article. :p

It's a fine opinion. It's just funny for someone with such an opinion to click on a Mario thread and funnier still for such a person to be confused when people in said thread don't share his opinion :p

This isn't a Mario thread, it's a Game Informer cover thread, which many times has a preview of other info to be in the mag.

From the article linked in the OP:

We'll also have plenty of non-Nintendo news, including features on Halo 4's Prometheans and the first three hours of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. To kick off the holiday review season, you can also read our thoughts on one of the year's biggest releases, Borderlands 2. Can Gearbox's massive sequel live up to the original? Find out in our October issue, which should be hitting print subscribers near September 10th and digital PC/Mac subscribers on September 11th.

what are you trying to say exactly if its just your own opinion?

So you came in here for other news, yet your first post in this thread was this:

I know that was for Derrick, but I find them super boring. No story, no characterization, dialogue, atmosphere, "immersion" (don't like that word, sounds like PR), it's just pure gameplay which isn't even good imo. I really can't stand platformers, just seem so pointless...no goal, nothing to hook you, brutal. LOVED em as a kid but not anymore.

You really did pop in here just for the other stuff!

More arrogant blathering, hair splitting and not accepting that variety in the multiplayer could be a good thing but it would be "too hard for the design team to figure out any other possible way." Sorry, don't buy it, don't agree.

So when you say something like what are you trying to say exactly if its just your own opinion?
I'm confused about what you're asking me, that sentence is what I think. I don't have any numbers to back it up.

What if the other stuff in the mag didn't interest me, either? Would that automatically exclude me from being able to reply to whatever the current discussion in the thread is?

They would have to do 1 of two things. They would either have to design the levels so that any set of abilities could complete them, which, since the game is multiplayer, means they'd have to be dumbed down and not fine-tuned to any specific ability set. OR they'd have to impliment a character-switching mechanic, which would be too complex and annoying.

I think it's obvious me and DynamicG are not really.

I'm willing to argue with Heavy about a lot of things. Love of platformers isn't one of them.

Yeah. I just think he's fun to poke at and get to explain his reasoning. I actually kind of like him.

Other people's opinions have 0 influence on what I find fun, it's just irritating when people don't display courtesy when discussing their opinions with others.

You just said that you were claiming it is your opinion and your opinion alone but you just said in the post of yours I quoted that you couldn't POSSIBLY be in the minority for an opinion like that and therefore indicating that your opinion is a majority one. Do you really not see this contradiction? I don't expect you to be this dense.

Heavy, at some point you just need to back off. It's not helping you any to defend yourself when you really don't need to and obviously neither side is going to change their mind about... I'm not even sure what is being argued about. This isn't the wrestling thread, no avatars or observer newsletters are going to come out of this.

Anyroad, nice cover for the game. I just can't get over the drunk looking yoshi though.

How bout 30/70, 40/60, 50/50? When I hear "minority" used in a conversation about size and percentages I think 10-15%, a major differential. This isn't a novel concept.

Genuinely surprised that comment brought X-pac heat. I'm pretty sure I've said as much before a few times and nobody cared and people even agreed.

I have an answer for you tiny packaged avatar.

Yes.

If you aren't going to agree with me that platformers are the best thing since sliced sausage I don't even want to see your tiny packaged with greatly toned thighs.

Oh man heavy....i take it back worst gi cover thread. If you dont care about platformers stay out of the thread. You know you came in here just to rile people up especially with that bullshit i cant see why people play platformers line. You know good and damn well why

Obviously Mario is going to sell stuff but re-using a pre-existing render for your cover is boring.

At least sketch over it in Photoshop or something.

Ok, that makes sense.

Me and these mighty quads destroyed the thread and I'm sorry about that. Certainly wasn't my intent, I didn't even refresh the page till more than a half hour later. Don't wanna be a thread shitter, I hate thread shitters.

For curiosity-sake, how old are you Heavy?

It's totally fine to come in here and talk about platformers even if you don't like them. Hell he could have even said he didn't like them, he's just awful at phrasing things in a way that leads to actual discussion.

If you dont even play fps you dont belong anywhere in the thread imo. I mean what do you have to bring to the table

Lots of things can be brought into a discussion by someone who isn't a fan. You can ask people why they like them and then reflexively consider why you don't like them. Discussion is more than just passing the talking stick around and speaking your opinion on the subject. There is a give and take to discussion that , when it works, makes even dissidents a valid part of the conversation.

That's why I think Heavy is funny. He's clearly not a dumb person, but he plows headlong into discussions without really thinking about how to actually engage the others in a non hostile way.

Sure you are.

Don't be coy, you know exactly what you are doing. ;)

If that were the case I wouldn't have waited a half hour to refresh the page to read all the replies. By the way, the way you worded your post and put the ;) reads like you're just trying to get me in trouble.

Ah ok. I was wondering because when I was younger (teenager), I really didn't like games made purely to capture great gameplay, and was much more interested in stuff like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid (story-heavy games). Once the Wii came out (graduating high-school) I made a turn towards liking both. Now, 22, I enjoy gameplay-focused games more then story-heavy games, just because I figured out most video game stories, characters, etc. suck.... badly. In fact the last few games I can think of that totally engrossed me, and had an actual engaging storyline was: Journey, Shattered Memories, SOTC, Metroid Prime, Half-Life series, and Beyond Good and Evil, Windwaker, and a few others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Anyways, I've grown tastes for both as I got older, but my taste has changed in age toward gameplay. But, my theory for you was wrong.

Off-Topic: I'm in Nursing btw. :)

The worst thing about all this is that I now need to redefine fun. I thought I was having it as recently as last week when I was playing the storyless (and thus enjoymentless) NSMB2 but now I don't know what was happening. Was it alien? Are figs fun?

This cracked me up :)

This would have been an interesting topic to discuss in a diff thread. For me it's the exact opposite... as a kid all you care about is explosions and shit, you can't really follow stories that well (at least I couldn't), especially with adult themes or just any complex theme. Then you get older and you can understand the nuances of the plot and characters. That's how it was for me. Same thing with other form of media; movies, TV, music. I'd have no idea what was going on in Breaking Bad if I was 10.

It's precisely because I enjoy depth and nuance in storytelling that most video game plots and stories hold very little appeal for me. They're often either wafer-thin excuses for explosions or so hilariously over-wrought that they impede gameplay.

That's a great point, don't have much else to add.

I guess atmosphere is another aspect, getting 'sucked into the world' can still happen even if the story is just average but this might have more to do with art style and graphics.

I stared at my screen dumbfounded. First of all, just to amend your ignorance:

No story,

no characterization, dialogue

Kamek pre-nervous breakdown:

His dialogue and animation become gradually more frantic as the game goes on. He goes from zealous confidence to spite, bargaining, pleading, begging and eventual total nervous breakdown. The opening of every boss battle shows his degradation, leading to:

At which point Kamek is crushed and discarded.

it's just pure gameplay

This is the most devastating quote I've ever seen on NeoGAF. Forget "Square Enix Just Shot Themselves In The Foot" or the nonsense spewed in the Uncharted 8/10 thread. This damning condemnation of a game for being "pure gameplay" is the spawn of a gaming mindset I do not ever wish to understand.

You don't like the Mario games? No problem, opinions are great and all that. You condemn games for being "pure gameplay"? I hope to Hell that you are an isolated case.

What is happening in here?

Are we comparing Mario to Assassins Creed? Or comparing if Mario is more 'gamey' than Guild Wars 2?

Is someone trying to make an objective argument that platformers are archaic?

You don't want Mario? Mario doesn't want YOU!

The issue is out now on iPad. I took a really quick look and there is some new info. We can see pictures of Yoshi eating fruit, Ice Mario in an underwater castle, Monte Moles in a Mario World stage, and some sort of race level over lava. Looks really nice. Also, there are a few pictures of the Nintendo Land Metroid game. I'm going to go read some more and report back.

We'll see. I think there is good reason to be skeptical of how well it will sell and how big it will actually be.

Too much uncertainty surrounding how well the Wii U will sell and how much franchise fatigue the NSMB franchise has accumulated. The 3DS one doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire so far.

And then don't forget the next 12 months are littered with other sales juggernauts like CoD, AC, Borderlands, GTAV, etc that could all vie for the title of "biggest game in the next 12 months".

Does it give any indication of whether there will be a Super Mario World style interconnected overworld (as opposed to the SMB3 style separate hub worlds for each set of stages)? The other SMW similarities have made me hopeful.

This thread has become insane. A game can be too gamey? "Pure gameplay" is a bad thing? Cut scenes and storylines can only improve games? What the fuck is this Heavy guy talking about?!

Like I've been playing Guild Wars 2 several hours a day since it came out. It blows my mind people would use that time to play a platformer when there's incredible games like this available to you. Except on like a cell phone when you're out of the house. It would feel like a complete waste of time. No goals, nothing to strive for except beating your score or what have you. Platformers are just a really bad, archaic, boring genre imo.

I'm late, but wow this is amazing!

Its genuinely the most concerning thing I've seen a supposed video games fan say on here.

If there are more like him, then god knows where the future of gaming is going. Movies that you can occasionally save your progress on, perhaps?

It blows my mind that people would waste their time playing videogames when they could be generating money and having sex. Games are just fixed, archaic shit meant to suck our time.
