it's wrong though.

This image is posted every time and it proves more PPI is a good thing, and not wasted. There are more things to display other than images and english text.

I wonder what the top image looks like when you blow it up 8x its actual size...

Your point is dumb.

There is a natural limit to your visual acuity. It's a little more nuanced than the conception of 'retina' that's been bandied about, but that concept is nonetheless a good rule of thumb to let people know that anything beyond that point is on the steep side of diminishing returns in terms of its efficacy.

600ppi might be useful for esoteric vernier acuity tests, or the double line/single line acuity test (i.e. is this line 2 lines, or 1 line?) but by and large, that's just not a factor in 99% of the images and text we view.

That said, these continued increases in smart phone/phablet sized screens is excellent news for me; these (or similar) panels are used in VR headsets, in which I have the highest degree of interest...

I cannot see pixels individually on the iPhone 5. I try to get closer and check, but it just strains my eyes and I lose focus. Not sure how added pixels help when I cannot even see pixels. If it doesn't hurt the battery life, cool. But I don't see how it doesn't hurt the battery life.

As I mentioned earlier - small screens have exceeded these DPI thresholds for some time now - cheap-ass PointAndShoots had 3-4inch panels with 400-500+DPI as standard for at least 2 years, and on higher end there are view-finders with DPI around 5000 (these are probably closer to the kind of use you'd expect in VR headset).

I had no idea. That's really impressive. But how can they be so high?

*edit*
Where are you getting your info from anyway? 5000+ sounds so high as to be absurd. That's higher than LCoS...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density

Shows that DSLRs are sporting 250 ppi view finders and below.

I feel if there was actually screens with such absurdly high PPIs, I probably would've heard about it on MTBS3D already, given that esoteric tech that can provide benefit for VR is kinda their forte...

i dont care about what the general consumer does or does not care about. I care about resolution and this is fucking sexy.

this tread is funny..

people down playing it and saying its not necessary...LOL

I bet you if apple comes out with retina+ .....those people will be saying something different..

Higher PPI is better of course but that image is very misleading since there doesn't seem to be any subpixel rendering which would make a big difference on the lower PPI one.

Nice spoiler on the Note 2's launch. LOL indeed.

By the time this phone hits the US, Samsung will have announced the Note III with a 1080p screen.

It's not necessary until Steve says it's necessary! It's Resolutionary!

The key thing is... If HTC and Samsung and others start rolling out more smartphones with these high DPI screens. Will Apple follow? Apple have told countless millions that there is no need for anything higher. They got people giving a shit about resolution and "retina" when before they didn't give 2 fucks.

So would Apple stand their ground or renege on their claim that you don't need anything else?

And would people who bought into Retina give a fuck that Apple changed the tune and just dance along anyway?

I can say that my father in laws iPad3 screen is fantastic. I wish my 24" PC displays had a similar DPI.

They will eventually. Just how they upgraded their ancient 3.5" screen to a 4" one by stretching the phone.

Retina+

fuck it. call it a "Cornea Display".

I wouldn't want Apple to make the screen a higher resolution at the same size. I'd rather Apple put focus on other things that need more attention as far as making the iPhone better.

Just imagine having a dead pixel on that screen, you probably wouldn't be able to distinguish it :p

Apple also told that big screens in phones were bad. I'll bet you good money that the next iphone will have an even bigger screen. Apple also told that 7" tablets are bad. And the smaller ipad is all but a given now.

Japan Display's 651 PPI screen seems to be directly aimed at getting Apple to buy it. It's basically double the PPI of the current 326 PPI display used in the iPhone.

They've already talked about how the iPhone 5 display is better than the 4/4S due to in-cell touch, better color saturation, closer lamination, thinner glass, etc.--they already have and know how to sell screens that are "better" than the 4/4S screen.

I would bet good money that the next iPhone will not have an even bigger screen.

He's talking about the next iPhone.

I iphone 6 will definitely have a bigger screen. Betting on that would be like stealing. So yes, I think that the 5S or however it's called is gonna have a bigger screen. There's a good chance anyway.

Not gonna happen. NFC and better specs is my guess.

There's a very small chance that the next iPhone will have a bigger screen. They're still having supply problems with the current iPhone, despite a 3 month head start on production. Besides the investments they've made in the particular display, they aren't going to go to switch their manufacturing process in 8 months (when they would have to start producing the next iPhone).

I think 2 years down the line, Apple will finally embrace multiple iPhone sizes.

Very soon Android and iPhone will completely cannibalize the remaining 20% of the smartphone market pie of Blackberry. Both of them need to cater to smaller niche of the market if them want to grow.

In Apple's case, that would be markets that want bigger, smaller, or cheaper smartphones.

I very much looking forward to my 1920x1200 Galaxy Note 3, I don't care what you guys think about it. Its mine! I also want a transformer dock for the Note 3, yes I know it will piss off more people.

Ah, so here are the Apple fans. I was waiting to hear about how Android users are spec whores and increasing PPI is meaningless and pointless.

Damn, this thing looks sweet. And here I swore the smartphone race was over because I didn't see how they could reasonably top the Galaxy S 3 with anything relevant LOL.

Even the 5" size of this is kinda genius. With the Note becoming so popular. This fits right in between the Note and GS3 sizewise. It's a good deal smaller than the note while still being huge.

I'm kinda surprised HTC leapfrogged Sammy like this, or that Samsung allowed them too. Then again, HTC did it before with the One-X, and that still didn't pan out for them. Too many quality control problems with HTC and Sense is overbearing imo.

PPI isn't meaningless, it's just meaningless once it's over 287

is it really leapfrogging the GS3? or just them trying to tug on the Note II's cape?

well it's 1080p, yeah thats leapfrogging. as i said, i find the size spectacular too. as somebody that the note is just too big for.

but i still wouldn't buy it lol. i'd wait for sammy's answer. i've only ever owned samsung smartphones, i can trust them ( even though my galaxy s was kinda a piece of shit lol)

if you read forums about the htc one-x, it seems to have tons of problems. yeah all phones do, but i'm convinced there's a real quality difference there.

1920x1080.

The Note was 1280x800 (16:10) but the Note II is 1280x720 (16:9). Samsung did this so the Note II could be slightly narrower and easier for people to hold than the Note, unlike for example the LG Optimus Vu. I would expect Note III to retain the 16:9 aspect for the same reason.

The only concern is the battery life. I know Mahs don't necessarily add up to hours but that is a lot to power with a 2100 battery. The Note 2's battery is monstrous and so is it's battery life

Kinda funny that MS is under 4% the way GAF goes on about the Lumia ad nauseum

I mean Jesus when you're getting hosed by RIM who itself are on deathwatch you need to look in the mirror.

Yet you like OLED with their pentile matrix problems and their horrible current color reproduction. Even the AMOLED+ displays which fix the pentile problem (the note II tries to fix it on the Super version and I say tries) still have color problems in terms of saturation.

Deeper black levels = better color saturation

But Microsoft can only go up, while RIM is basically done for.

see, you don't get it, the colors are TOO DEEP.

Too saturated. If you use the screen to review photos (taken in a SLR), the Samsung amoled screen is too inaccurate.

Of course if you don't plan to do it, then by all means knock yourself out. Most of the time people can not tell and they think a saturated/HDR look is "better". Alot of the instagram filters are also based on HDR principle.

But Microsoft can only go up, while RIM is basically done for.

You say that, but MS marketshare has decreased since WP7. *snicker*

Ignorance is bliss for them I guess.
At what point does someone's enjoyment of a product result from the product being widely popular vs the product itself being great.

If anything, the reason you see so many go off about the Lumia is because most people don't have it or know about it. It's a beautiful and great phone and those that have it love it. But more importantly, the recent bombardment of Lumia news comes from the Lumia 920 which runs Windows Phone 8.

Past sales performance means nothing when you have the biggest marketing push you'll ever see from Microsoft with combined release of the Surface/Windows 8/Windows Phone 8. Microsoft is spending 2 Billion on marketing.

So not only is the Lumia 920 the tip of the spear for WP8, it will also combine the full onslaught of marketing by Microsoft for all things Windows this fall.

But I have to come back to this again, the insinuation that people can't be excited about or rave about a product that's not widely popular is pretty pathetic. Do you guys only play Call of Duty games and make fun of everything else?
