The 'Skylanders Giants' |OT|

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I really hope the WiiU version is going to be as good as the other ones and not just a buggy port.

Vicarious Visions is developing the WiiU version, i would be surprised if it doesnt end up being the best version.

They developed the PS3 and 360 versions of the initial game, which are literally buggy ports.

Wish I could preorder the new figures getting released Sunday. It'd make me feel a lot better.
No kidding. I'm only pre-ordering the game because there is a $5 discount at Best Buy. I won't even be home on release day, so I figure the odds of me getting anything at the store to be zero.

I'm 35yrs old and my son's love of the original completely sucked me in. He managed to collect all of the original 32 plus the four legendary figures (and thanks to GameMaster78 he also got the sidekicks). I ended up doing podcast interviews with people involved with the game and I've been consuming every morsel of Giants news ever since...just gutted I have to wait until Christmas to play the damn thing!

Planning on ignoring the reposed figures and picking up the Giants, LightCore and Legendary figures this time out.

For those in the UK, all three Wave 1 Giants can be pre-ordered from play.com for £12.99. The cheapest I've seen them anywhere.

Preordered this a while ago, completely forgot that it was coming out so soon. Time to dust off the old Skylander collection.

The way the 3DS game is packaged and priced is blatantly consumer unfriendly. Two of the same figures and carrying the same price as the console versions.

Vicarious only made the 3DS version and the Cloud Patrol/iPhone game. XPEC did the PS3/360 ports it seems (can also be seen on the companies-logos at the beginning) Toys for Bob did the original/Wii game.

Having played it from start to finish, the 360 version (which has never had a patch) is impressive in how few bugs it has out of the gate. I can only remember encountering one or two.

I can't seem to find a complete list of the wave 1 figures. Oddly, we already have an accurate list of wave 2. I'm trying to figure out which figures I should look for on day one.

*edit* Never mind, I found the ad from EB Games showing all the wave 1 releases.

Well, that's pretty annoying that Shroomboom is limited to the exclusive pack only. He isn't even slated for wave 2. So it looks like we will only have 10 out of the 16 new figures available by Christmas (not counting lightcore or series 2). Great. That means I am going to have to fight every grandparent out there for the other new figures in January's wave 3.

Oooo, that's not good to hear. I got the Wii version last time but I was going to go for the PS3 Giants because HD. Is this a bad idea? I'd be willing to stick with the Wii version if it means I get competent coding.

The original Skylanders game was intended to be Wii exclusive. At some point, it was decided to go multi-platform, so this may account for the programming problems. I don't know if the PS3/360 are inherently more susceptible to crashing/freezing and extreme framerate dips, or if it was just the last-minute coding. The trophy bugs on PS3/360 making it impossible to "100% complete" the game are clearly caused by development, but I suspect we won't see any obvious errors this time around.

Has there been any comment by Activisoin abotu why they priced the Portal Owners pack so poorly? Are they really just trying to scam parents and grandparents who will just grab without looking and realizing it's a bad deal?

Is any store giving any preorder bonus if you get the pack?
Best Buy is giving a "gift bag" with misc. things like a poster and wristband. That aside there's not much. Maybe Toys R Us will give something as they have ties to it.

This isn't out yet? I was at Walmart on Sunday trying to do the WiiU layaway thing and they had the 3DS version.
Remember reading about it. Seems they can't sell them until next week and is basically for display until then.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Goddamn should have got the Starter Pack, more toys!

So I got this today, anyone want a video?

In Canada, the full starter pack is $25 more. Since the single characters are $10, it's roughly the same value.

Although, I just noticed the photo on the Best Buy site show Jet Vac is included. Since he isn't available in wave 1 or 2, I guess it's worth snagging the starter regardless. I need to verify if Jet Vac is indeed the one included. The photos above show Pop Fizz.

I noticed that the Best Buy website shows a store in Vancouver having everything "in stock". If you live near the "Langford" store, go grab what you want!

*edit* I see that Pop Fizz is the one included with the 3DS version. That's lame for them since he is an individual in wave 1 also.

*edit 2* I see that Jetvac, Pop Fizz, and Shroomboom were the originally planned wave 1 figures. Anyone know for sure which are in wave 1? All the ads I see show Chill, Fright Rider, and Pop Fizz.

Okay, I changed my pre-order from portal owner's pack to the full starter. I'm paying $17 extra just to have Jet Vac four months early. I have no use for the extra portal or Cynder.

I bet there are going to be a lot of "portal only" listings on Ebay in the future. :D

Is there a list of what the 3-packs will be somewhere? Also what is the first wave of lightcores? (Just googled, so Drobot, Eruptor and Prism Break only? I'm not sure if I care enough for them that much. I'll probably just grab Eruptor since I don't own the old one)

I'm sort of glad there's no online again. I'm just gonna share with my gf, there's no point in me buying one too. We'll probably grab the starter pack, I like the new Cynder and she can have Jet Vac. I want the lightcore one anyways.

EDIT: Releases seem to be all here

dat prices!
(hope they will be not that much in US/Canada)

Edited: looking at the Starter Pack, in the info page there is a poster saying "+45 Skylanders to Collect". It will be expansive.... (original game stated +30 and there were 32 + 4 legendaries, not counting the limited editions).

So a recap from the information on that page:

WAVE 1:
Starter Pack:
- Giant Tree-Rex
- Jet-Vac
- Cynder

Giants Packs:
- Bouncer
- Crusher
- Swarm

Single Packs - Lightcore:
- Prism Break
- Eruptor
- Drobot

Single Packs - New Skylanders:
- Pop Fizz
- Frigth Rider

Single Packs - Reposed Skylanders:
- Slam Bam (S2)
- Trigger Happy (S2)

Triple Packs and Battle Packs:
- Chop-Chop / Shroomboom / Golden Dragonfire Cannon
- Pop Fizz / Trigger Happy (S2) / Whirlwind (S2)
- Chill / Ignitor (S2) / Zook (S2)

Let's hope all new and reposed skylanders will be available in the 3-packs (to save money)

I dislike the price increases for single and triple packs. $8->$10, $20->$25. Though the price of singles doesn't surprise me since most retail stores were already selling them for $10 (the price also eventually increased from $8-$9 on Amazon). With the added bonus of being forced into purchasing S2 characters with any bundle/pack, I will probably end up buying a lot less this time around.

I see the Dragonfire Cannon is in that one triple pack. Is there any other info on the "items" or are there any planned expansion levels this time around?

Pretty much but I'm seeing if it's gonna be easy for me to sell my old ones without losing that much. I like how the new ones look more for some characters.

Will S2 characters will work on the old game (excluding the new characters)?

Posted up a video of the Skylanders: Giants console unboxing that posted up the other day. It's a nicely done set.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkOQS7j14RQ

It is the 360 package, but the PS3 and Wii are identical.

Well Cynder is a S2. So she'll have a higher level cap than the original Cynder.

Series 1 figs = work in both games.
Series 2 figs = work in both games, though new power is not available in SA.
All new figs (inc Giants) = only work in Giants, do not work in SA.

Some of the new figs set out:

Same here in terms of the figures; I will then probably sell my Series 1 figures for which I have LightCore equivalents.

I looked on Play and couldn't see the Giants there; any links (or is it a banned site here?).

I'm hoping the paint jobs will be better this time around, and also that Punch Pop Fizz will get a single pack release down the line. Hopefully we won't get screwed out of things like Red Drill Sergeant, Sidekicks, Flocked Stump Smash, etc.

Also a little gutted that Sainsburys have only despatched my PS3 version and not my 3DS, but given that I got both for £30 apiece or thereabouts (Portal Owner sets), I can't complain.

Same here, even though Drobot looks meh as a lightcore the original's pose was crappy anyways.

I didn't realize this was coming out on Sunday. Preordered it from Newegg, guess I'll get it later in the week. Now I just have to grab some figures on Sunday.

The figures didn't last long on Play, they were up on the site for less than 24hrs to pre-order. Probably a mistake on their part.

BatDan

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
So what's the difference between the Golden Dragonfire Cannon and the regular one? Or is it just like the variants where there's no change in the game?

I changed my pre-order from 360 version to Wii U version. Just a hunch, but I think it will be the "definitive" version.

I contacted Sainsbury's about my order and they very kindly posted my 3DS version out today with extra postage to get to me tomorrow. Here's hoping it does!

I'll be going down to my local Tesco tomorrow to buy all the figures I can find before ordering any others online.

After having purchased the first one on the 3DS (I sorta liked it) I was really inteersted in the Wii U version for the NFC feature, until they announced that you need the portal also in the Wii U version. What a wasted opportunity, imho!

Don't know what you're talking about. The Owners Pack is 59.99 and the Starter Pack is 74.99. $15 difference. So you're only losing 5 bucks by buying the Starter Pack so you can get Jet Vac.

Unless you know of a place selling the Owners Pack for 49.99?

i'm interested in trying skylanders for the first time with the Wii U version.

what is up with those mega bloks... parents are already dropping a huge chunk of cash for the actual game and figures, now there's smaller mega blok figs that don't even work with the actual game? I see it is to compete with ninjago... I don't see it catching on, but we'll see

Cool.

But MegaBlocks? Quick, someone make a gif from that episode from Family Guy where Peter complains about their childhood traumas due to the fact that his parents always give him MegaBlocks instead of Lego.

That's what I'm thinking about. I read there will be a few exclusive mini-games, but that's about what I could gather for info. Also, they will be able to play on the gamepad and we'll still have the TV :)

Nah, try using the gamepad with a figure sat on top at the same time. They made a sensible choice.

it would be sufficient to enable the game, as for the 3ds version, to simply unlock the avatar once tapped the figure on the gamepad.
there is no need to keep the figure on the portal/gamepad at all

Katzii

Difference is though, with the console and the 3DS versions, you can't change your character during a level in the 3DS one, but they openly encourage it in the console ones. It might get a little aggravating to have to keep tapping a character to the gamepad and especially with how kids are, they've probably seen the videos where people sort of "slam" them on the portal... Would not make for a very happy parent to have to replace the Gamepad!

I stuck with versions for the systems I had purely because I'm a cheapskate, hahahah.

The local toysrus has about 4 times the space that they had for last years sets and a load of cardboard boxes with do not sell before October 19th on them so I guess they're hopeful of a large profit. Might go back tomorrow to see if the waves are the same as elsewhere as I seem to remember geographic availability being slightly more random last year.

Skylander was a good seller in terms of videogame, but from what I know it was huge in terms of toys (catalogued by NPD data as videogame accessories)
doens't surprise me to ear about more in-store space dedicated to the sequel
