Guys, you are both totally wrong, here's the timeline of events:

12:24) Pctx starts a thread titled "Pctx presents: Libya. The official thread of who knew what, when and why it happened". At the same time I'm slacking off at work and RDdreamer has already begun his response.

12:25) dave is ok replies with what seems like a snarky post, but this is unconfirmed. I think it's obvious at this point that the backfire has already begun, nobody is ready to call it yet though.

12:25 and 30 seconds) RDdreamer has finished his response, but is waiting patiently for the right time.

12:31) I send a PM to Pctx with a picture of a Aguirre and BFFs caption and also tell him that there are signs of thread backfire and we need help.

12:32) Pctx denies my request for help.

12:51) There have been many eyewitness reports that show many snarky replies at this point, there is still no response to requests for backup.

1:56) RDdreamer finally lets loose his shelling on the thread, Pctx posts to let us know he's okay.

2:09) Mercury Ford FINALLY calls the thread backfire.

So as you can see, there's definitely something fishy going on here.

This thread became amazing.

There was something wrong with the original sourcing, obviously the thread required better sourcing and it looks like someone may have called for more of it, to prevent a backfire. The question should be this: Why wasn't better sourcing provided in the first place in order to prevent a backfire? Where was the extra sourcing? Why were calls for better sourcing ignored? Why aren't these questions being answered? We ask, you decide.

I'm calling bullshit on this announcement. Nothing's gonna change the trajectory of this thread backfire so late in the game and Mengy is well known for bluster and attention-grabbing.

Thread about how a terrorist attack may have been mishandled -- not to mention downplayed and misdirected, as it was close to an election and the administration may have not wanted this on their record -- has now been turned into a game of liberal-GAF grab-ass.

Oh the irony. Yeah, pctx; I bet your face is red right about now!

Every administration has had a terrorist attack on their record :p
This is pretty much one of the best ones in terms of american lives lost.

While friends of the OP indicate that this, in fact, was not a backfire there is still ample evidence that the OP in fact did not properly source his thread which led to the backfire we now see. What is the OP (and allies) trying to hide? Why are they not admitting what we all see? Why are they trying to cover-up the backfire? We report, you decide.

Fair & Balanced.

Seriously Duffyside, give it a rest. You couch 99% of your posts with a pre-emptive "but I bet libGAF etc. etc." creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You aren't going to change the liberal lean of the site, and some people are not going to take shit seriously no matter what you say. (One of them, incidentally, is Pctx.) Ignore them and engage with posters you want to have honest discussions with and don't start off on the defensive. Let the posts that annoy you roll off your back, unless you're being personally attacked. (Like if someone is an idiot and tells you to "end yourself", which is totally uncalled for and got them banned.) If you can't do that, don't post in political threads.

For more, let's read this breaking news bulletin from Duffyside, reporting from his ivory tower high above the events of the stupid liberals down below.

I'm getting word that he urges us to dismiss the fact that this thread was ridiculous from the start, built with no intention of engendering genuine discussion. He would like to remind us of the fundamental truth that the liberals are the true embarrassment as liberal GAF is only allowed to educate, they can never participate in the satirical fun.

Typical Duff-GAF. Making snarky remarks and pretending that the backfire wasn't mishandled--not to mention downplayed and misdirected, as the OP is close to a ban and may not have wanted a backfire on his record.

Duff-GAF is being eerily, suspiciously flippant about this whole thing.

He's not playing around here, this is a serious thread. Show some tact.

I'm still not understanding the issue here.

Is it now about who gave an order to stand down?

What exactly is the big thing here that I'm not seeing? Yes, there were confusing reports in the first days, and yes, different departments seemed to provide differing answers, but as we've seen, that was because the intelligence agencies had various answers to give. All I see is goal posts being moved, daily, to try and find something, anything to pin on the administration.

So, I'd welcome it if somebody could provide, in very clear terms, what the fuss is about here.

The bolded is ironic, in case you didn't know.

99%? Wow, that's way higher than I thought. Sounds like you should ignore me. Or... let my posts roll off your back? Moreover, this wasn't a prediction on my part, but a reaction to what was happening, which I found distasteful and laughable.

I'll continue to participate in threads as I wish, trying my best not to engage in behavior that will get me banned or that I will personally regret. Today? I've done well.

Foreign policy and the economist are great foreign policy sources, sourcing from Fox News is like sourcing the onion. I rather have an informed debate not a partisan assignation piece.

An inform populace is the goal of the news.

I don't ignore you because you also occasionally ask genuine questions which is why it's frustrating when you go back to lol-libGAF mode.

Essentially, if you preface a post with "everyone's probably going to be a dick to me about this, but..." well then everyone's probably going to be a dick to you about it. It creates the problem you're ostensibly criticizing.

I pretty much make Jackson Pollock look like Sesame Street. (Take that Big Bird).

To be fair though, I still don't get how anyone liberal or conservative can basically say this is a non-issue or "people just don't get Libya" as this directly ties to how we are viewed as a nation by our own people. At home or abroad, if it carries an American flag, you treat that land as American soil. If the fight comes to that soil, you had better be ready to defend it against any enemy, foreign or domestic. In this case, it was both.

This is like verbal diarrhea.
You're likening an attack on an embassy that only took 4 american lives, heck not even likening - almost saying that it's worse! -to a national invasion of the U.S.A?

the election is drawing near and the GOP feels it can politicize Obama's response to this tragedy as a way to garner support. they want to paint the man who rebuilt America's reputation after GWB, the man who killed osama bin laden, as someone who is weak on foreign policy. it isn't working very well.

I'm open to a different view on things, but yeah, this is how I'm seeing it.

Most of my issues with Obama stem from extending Bush policies when it comes to the war on terror, but I have zero reason to think that Romney would be more thoughtful in his use of those powers. Sucks. But trying to paint Obama as weak is a serious stretch.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo........ I'm saying that in this instance, the SEALS that helped the compound were in affect defending American soil and there is a reason why we have the saying the Marine Corps "Don't leave anyone behind..." which is held by our military institutions in their own way. I may be crazy but marginalizing the death of an ambassador and saying "only took" in a sentence shows me that there are some people that apparently take life granted and/or don't value it that much.

Before you get all pissed off that I just stuffed your mouth full of words, my outrage over this is justified and while it is at times a little over the top, it is repulsive to me that people don't give two shits about this news story.

DO give two shits about this story, heck give four shits about this story as four americans died, but please don't do yourself disservice by attempting to liken this to an attack on actual american soil - not an attack on an embassy in a hot-zone.

It was just 4 american lives, and they died as a result of high tensions following a civil war. Considering the circumstances, I'd say that things went down pretty well.

A lot more civilians could have died.

If this is a sign of Obama being "weak" when it comes to foreign politics, then I do not want to see what the GOP would do to fuck up the situation over there in the ME.

I'm not, I'm stating that our military views our consulates and embassies in effect as American soil and will defend it to their deaths, which is what happened here.

Perhaps that should be changed then, if that would have lead to fewer americans dying.

I highly doubt that has much to do with Obama though.

It's a stretch but I would say that the boys on the ground cared more about the lives of the people in the consulate than Obama did.

You wanna know why I'm pissed off? Because I do give two shits about this kind of story. Our foreign policy and doings around the world should be of interest to people in this country. But in this instance I firmly believe the Romney campaign and then a lot of others on the right poisoned the well with this story by jumping on it from the outset trying to politicize anything and everything that comes out of it. Pigeon stated something like this earlier, and I agree with him. These are things we should be discussing and we should be learning from, but Mitt ruined that. A calm, rational discussion over what could be changed and/or done differently does not evolve out of jumping at the first thing you see. Information from these sorts of things is often very muddled in the first few days or even EIGHT FUCKING DAYS. That's reality. We gain nothing trying to sling mud and tiny shreds of whatever evidence of anything we can find at each other. Let the dust settle, find out what actually fucking happened, and then let's talk about it.

I tell you, I adore this new aggressive Pctx. He's like overcompensating for the recent string of conservativeGAF bannings, and it's so hilarious to see in action. I mean the painfully forced rhetorical flourishes, the seething anger at the impending second Obama term, the unbelievable outrage that nobody else seems to care about this except the INDEPENDENT MEDIA at FOX NEWS, the "worse than Watergate/Fast and Furious"... COMBINED.

I hope Pctx sticks around a long time and then wades into PoliGAF so we can have some more color.

So, it's come down to this, huh?

He called the loss of four lives "not optimal."

It's the sort of cold, emotionless thing you'd expect from a man who doesn't care about American lives, a man who bows to foreign leaders and apologizes to them when they kill our citizens, a man trapped in a loveless marriages for political purposes.

A man so stealthy, so invisible, that after four years in office he still has no record.

Sad thing about this thread is the situation is a serious topic but its handled so poorly its just mocked

Let's be clear, nobody is mocking the deaths of four Americans.

What is being mocked, is the mentality taken by Fox News and others that this event somehow symbolizes a massive issue that Barack Obama has in his foreign policy. As a matter of differing perspectives, I would say that using the event to make a point that doesn't exist as the facts don't back it up is disrespectful to the deaths of the individuals at said event.

Why is it always "Former Seals"?

One that brings up that bullshit meter pretty high that they could be fake sources and two it means they could either be a CIA Operative (Which why the fuck would you be saying their names?) or two and far more likely they are fucking Contractors

Timeline of events

1. Protest

2. FORMER Seals who are now contractors hear gunfire.

3. FORMER Seals who are now contractors call a line to see if they can "Totally help out there bra!".

4. Operator on the other line who is trained for this kind of situation and is most likely not Obama, directly talking to Obama, or has Obama or Hillary directly feeding them answers, tells them to back down. The reason for this is a strategic one because there may be other attacks and especially ambushes planned.

5. One of the least damaging attacks on "US Soil" occurs and is used as a talking point by a Republican running for President and a Bull Shit News Company because there is nothing else they can come up with.

By which you mean a man who has not much in the way of dirt for conservatives to fling at him.

(For the benefit of non-Americans, I'm using "conservatives" by its modern American English definition. A translation into British English would be along the lines of "deluded liars")
