WiiU - Undercooked and rushed to the market?

None of this is unexpected to me. Basically the way I see it, Nintendo's trying to catch up 6 years of development on competing consoles with maybe a year of development time.

At this point there are bugs and some pretty obvious performance issues. Give it a while, early adopters always get the beta test treatment.

Remember King Kong on the 360? Madden 2006 on the 360? Perfect Dark on the 360? Looking back, those games were fucking horrible.

Remember PGR3? Call of Duty 2? Looking back, those games were solid and were games that looked far better than anything on the PS2.

This perfectly sums up Nintendo's philosophy.

Nintendo, Nintendo.

What is going on. I finally have everything physically set up but when I got to the point of syncing my game pad with the system, this test screen appeared on the game pad screen.

Has anyone experienced this? I tried googling this problem but I wasn't able to find anything.

Out of all makers, Nintendo hardware usually takes the longest to drop its price, so there's not much of an incentive to wait if you think you're going to buy it anyway. Might as well get to know it and experience the new console launch rush.

It's tough to make that argument after the 3DS.

It feels rush to me. Sticking with my guns and wait it out til next year to pick one up when all the kinks are worked out.

I'm thinking this, too. A lot of this is disappointing but I'm sure most of it will be ironed out sometime. Outside of the not-really-an-Account-system snafu, which is genuinely pretty awful.

I'll freely admit that there are many, many aspects about this console that feel half-baked, but my girlfriend and I had a blast playing Nintendo Land tonight and I have a hard time getting her to play anything that isn't Ocarina of Time. That alone is worth the price of admission for me.

Lack of quality control on 3rd party launch titles (Source)

Not sure how this is Nintendo's fault.

Day Zero 5gb patch download (Source)

This is just literally false. Still a huge patch, not even close to 5gb though.

Shorter than expected battery life (between 3-5 hours reported so far by various users)

Pretty sure it wasn't advertised as being any longer. Short yes, but not unexpectedly so.

Severe problems with distance limitations and gameplay (Source)

One would assume this varies greatly between setups and the particular wireless density of an area. I've seen a lot of people who haven't had any problems.

I mean it was obviously rushed to market, and there are some unfortunate issues to be ironed out. But let's not pile on with false information and dubious complaints.

The OS being slow and the like was to be expected, imo. I expect them to patch that stuff and make it functional. it's the pain of early adopters.

The shitty RAM and the like on the other hand.... EH.

It has its rough corners for sure. Half the OS is probably still temporary files to allow it to run while they finish major sections for the December patch.

That said I am having fun. ZombiU is entertaining and is exactly what I wanted from a Survivor Horror Game. Its Not Run and Gun COD or modern Resident Evil.

So he's a better source but I'm not? I had a 360 at launch, hell I even attended the Zero Hour launch event, I know everything that happened with the 360's launch, plus owned all those games. It is not equivalent to the multiplaftform games on Wii U which are the same damn version as on the PS3 and 360, and run worse.

So you bought RE4 and thought PS2 has more power than your PC. Than you bought Skyrim and thought PS3 has less power than X360. Keep that spirit up.

...hate me...

If anything, the 3DS should be considered a lesson learned by Nintendo when it comes to pricing.

But I'm sure this will drop faster than the Wii though, even if they pull some SKU type of thing, as in 8GB phases out, 32GB for $300, 64GB for $350.

Still too early to tell though.

Can't sleep so I was reading Wii U threads. From another thread:

Launch titles (especially ports) have issues because devs are learning new hardware and using continually updating, non-final SDKs under a hard set, uncompromising deadline.

I speak from very recent experience. :)

I have no personal experience with Wii U but I'll add to this that new game console architecture almost always brings its own set of peculiarities that can make porting a difficult job, especially under tight deadlines. It will take some time to get used to.

And it's not always just launch ports but sometimes also late ones, for example Resident Evil 4 HD on Playstation 3 frequently drops frame rate.

Jesus christ, this launch has been unbelievably fucked up. The shitty ports weren't shocking to me, but the OS having almost PS1 era load times and so many crashes is really atrocious to me, especially since this is Nintendo of ALL companies, the company that I AT LEAST expect to have major bugs ironed out before a console comes out. Its almost like Nintendo hired Bethesda to make the OS for us to be free beta testers. If it weren't for the fact that I'm really enjoying New Super Mario Bros U and Scribblenauts Unlimited, I would have seriously considered returning the Wii U, and not picking it up until this shit is fixed.

Oh, that reminds me! With all these launch games looking the way they do, I'm wondering how the hell that Zelda looks that way? My guess is they go with some kind of different look, ala Wind Waker to hide the system's limitations.

If it did look like that though...hot damn.

The December patch? when was this announced?

...huh? Is that a tiny battery in a much larger battery slot?

I would imagine it was designed so they could sell you a bigger battery a year from now, but the plan was always for about what they have now. They were so conscious of weight and power draw and cost on this system that I can't imagine any other way.

I do think it was rushed OS wise. Its a slow OS. Nintendo already has a big December patch coming, so I hope they can speed it up.

I'm enjoying NSMBU. I love the super Mario world influence in the game. Black Ops 2 runs ok. It doesn't feel like a solid 60fps tho, but it's still smooth enough to not worry about.

I'd said this thread is rushed haha.

Seeing as you have some misinformation in the OP. I'd say give it a week, until we know what's up with everything and what gets sorted out.

I'm not making excuses for Nintendo though. From what I've been reading so far, this seems like a very disappointing launch and if some of the issues don't get sorted out soon, the WiiU will have even more of a negative stigma attached to it.

Personally, I'm still excited for the WiiU and it's potential and if anything, the launch woes so far have helped stave off any temptation on going out and just buying the thing.

Also, lets not forget the huge failures Sony had with the PS3 launch(hell even last year with PSN) and it still marchs on. In the end, it's all about the games and improving the OS/Service the best you can. Hopefully Nintendo has some quick fixes.

After the undercooked 3DS that I bought a year and a half ago, none of this surprises me. I'm glad I decided to hold off for a while.

Exact same boat. I like Nintendo games, enough to usually buy their system, but the Wii U just feels phoned in. I got burnt on the 3DS so will wait for this. Although I am buying the kid a 3DS for Christmas.

If 3DS is any indication, things will turn up just fine. I mean, all of the join game and folders came out months after launch. With every Nintendo console, we go through this. Who remember that ugly DS phat? Or horizontal GBA abomination? 3DS launch was full of complain threads. Every problem listed there can be fixed with upcoming updates. And as for the account being tied to console, it will be gone when account system is implemented to 3DS.

It's obvious that they just reused whatever old batteries they are buying for the DS/3DS/DSi, just to save another 50cents or 1 dollar.

How'd you come up with that amount?

No doubt I wish they had gone with something bigger, but if your numbers are accurate, that's a ton of money.

I haven't cracked my gamepad open to check the battery type nor did I check the exact file size of the OS update but I'm having fun with the system. Does that count?
