I know a lot of people would hate that, but I would be absolutely hyped for something like this.

Somebody needs to make a game like this. Might as well be Kojima so he can call it MGS and it'll sell a lot. A non-traditional narrative structure might also make his writing more tolerable.

Also, anyone has any idea why in both trailers, when looking at a bright light, we hear a creepy sound?

GZ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=L5IVOs5Pxh8#t=234s

In Phantom (a light is shone in Big Boss' eyes):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nSfajBs2nyQ#t=173s

That's not even mentioning to weird floating lights/lens effect in the GZ trailer that happens twice.

The second instance especially looks like a doctor is shining a light into comatose Big Boss' eye to see if his pupil will react, and the coma reality is fabricating an explanation for the real-world stimuli.

Is there a simple MGS timeline somewhere that has the major events and all the different SNAAAAAKES?

PS3 has the MGS database...

I'm quite convinced this is MGS related, but I haven't had the chance to read through the thread. Only saw a few highlighted images.

I actually thought EXACTLY that about the hovering orange-thingies in the GZ trailer: that we were seeing the "real" whatever-thing is happening, and that we were just seeing a memory or something like that. Basically, the patient is in a device that is making him/us relive his memories (something that has been hinted at existing since the first MGS3 trailers, and even present in some MGS encyclopedia thingy). So the orange lights that show up twice when looking at TECHNOLOGY is as if the patient is "making a connection" between reality and his memory (I'm looking at technology in my dream, I know I am starring at technology in real-life, hence I wake up partially).

Same thing when looking at the bright light, but in a different way.

If that is the case though, it means you are reliving the memories of not only Big Boss.

Zanzibar isn't Zanzibarland. Zanzibarland was in Central Asia. The MGS4 novel says that it's actually Tselinoyarsk.

Fuck, you're right, it was Zanzibarland in mg2. I'm getting old.
Well, but still there's a British flag here and an american one in gz trailer, that must mean something !

Edit: Nevermind I'm seeing things, needed a higher quality vid

Why Moby Dick? And why was there a whale eating a helicopter?

KOJIMA!!!

Have you guys noticed the severed (or artificial) arm that flies across the (operating?) room with the explosion ? Or am I seeing things

It could simply just be over a british soliders bed who is also recovering in some sort of military hospital.

It could of course, but it looks like it's there for you to notice.

The whole Moby Dick thing, in my opinion is allegory/metaphor. Seems like Kojima is taking heavy inspiration from the story; Moby Dick as a god-like figure, a mirror of its environment, the embodiment of 'free will'. I'd say (as most might agree?) that the whale imagery is highly symbolic of the character's psyche, most likely Big Boss? Big Boss always seems to be seeking something. The white whale might be a reflection of that search and his detriment and frustrations with finding the truth. Moby Dick, the story, is perfect for exploring themes and motifs of the limits of human truth-seeking, self-reflection, affinity to the outside world, destruction and fear. Seems like Kojima, stuck behind the MG series, has decided to embrace it and pursue deeper, more intellectual constructs in the games.

Count me in.!

The smoking gun is the end of the cinematic where they just show the name "THE PHANTOM PAIN" and the cut-outs above the letters allow "METAL GEAR SOLID V" to fit perfectly.

So all signs point to this being Ground Zeroes? Nobody makes my head hurt like Kojima. I love him.

It wouldn't make sense to reveal both Ground Zeroes and a new MGS at the same time.

Am i the only one to make some sort of connection between phantom 'pain' > phantom limb syndrome > missing arm/hand. it's probably absolutely nothing but it's been in my head all day..

By incredible you mean incredibly small. The vast majority of reactions were people saying what am I watching or just simply repeating what they were watching. ("Flaming unicorn + flaming whale = day 1" was my fav response)

.

Yes...."incredibly small"

that was quite a shitty trailer

O....k? What a boring trailer.

At least it's a new IP, but that did nothing for me.

That game looked stupid. What the hell

That was the worst fucking trailer I've ever seen.

Well that trailer sucked.

That was dumb as hell.

Horrible trailer...

viseo game reveal equivalent of the wierd mister plow ad

The Phantom Pain.
Sorry, if you want to hook me, show me more than crawling.

That trailer was pretty meh.

Looks meh.

That trailer was bullshit, the constant black screens with questions was infuriating.

has to be one of the worst trailers ive ever seen.

Whats this?
Whats that?
What what what..

I care not about that stupid game. Hope that wasn't their big reveal. Looks like another QTE based game to me.

Awful trailer. Too many questions, not enough actual (or any) gameplay. I'm interested, but it didn't show nearly enough of what matters. In game footage is fine, but it's also the standard now. Gameplay is king.

That was an absolutely terrible trailer.

Eh... Was that a nextgen crawling simulator?

Well the first unveil was utterley shit.

Yeah, that was a terrible trailer.

Ads? Bleh.

Was that supposed to be Geoffs big reveal? Cos it's a big let down from skyrim and arkham city.

wtf....

Terrible trailer and the game is most certainly CURRENT GEN

Nothing about it looked impressive visually

after that ridiculous build up, the game was actually pretty underwhelming...trailer seemed off too....

If that was the big reveal, how fucking dumb.

Agreed.

Too much tease. Too many questions.

It needed to payoff at some point and it never did.

Incredibly small......

Just caught up on everything. What an amazing teaser, and how they really should be done; creatively, imaginatively. But I guess many don't have the budget for that.

Has anyone tried super imposing the Moby Dick Studio logo over maps? To me the right edge of the tail looks like it fits the western coast of Africa, and if you flip it, weirdly enough, it matches the eastern edge of China. South America? They don't fit perfectly though, not on this map anyway. They definitely strike me as something off a map though. More fuel for the fire, I guess.
EDIT: Would kind of match the motif of Big Boss panning the globe post-Les Enfants Terribles.

You have too much time on your hands. As a standalone game, a trailer like this made no sense, was poorly paced and weirdly cut.

As a Metal Gear game however, it made perfect sense. Hence the twist in sentiment in this thread.

It's not exactly rocket science, not sure what you're trying to prove here.

Loling the fact that neogaf went from hating this to "Omg look in da shadow of the title its mgsv.." deserves that on corny "this is neogaf" gif

Did anyone find out what the female voice says at the very end of the trailer? Not sure if it was Russian or English with a Russian accent. Only thing I cold hear was...

"He has come to" ????

Exactly. It wasn't meant to be a "good" trailer. It was supposed to get people to think "wait a minute, is this MGS?" and trawl through the clues.

Which we did. Mission accomplished Kojima, you managed to upstage Dark Souls II.

It makes perfect sense as a metal gear game? Nothing about any of this makes any sense.

Was this background image always on the Moby Dick Studios website? I just noticed it, sorry if it was, maybe I'm having an aneurysm from all the awesome.
EDIT: Anyway, picture of stairs, what does it mean?

I noticed that appearing, too. Don't remember it the first time I was there.

PS3 has the MGS database...

That thing is actually filled with a lot of holes. Not necessarily big plot holes, either, weird minor details that are wrong. I can't remember specifically, but I know there was something wrong with some info about who was wearing the football in MGS2.

Oh really? Thanks for letting me know. That's a shame as it has a nice interface and you can get lost just linking through everything...

You have too much time on your hands. .

The guy linked to thread and I went through 4 or so pages pressing the little "+" button at any negative comment I saw, probably missed a bunch.
Took 1 min tops. No digging involved, like I said earlier it was a wave of negativity.

If you had 1 minute of free time, you could have spent it watching 1/60th of a MGS cutscene. You wasted your time!

Sorry if this was already answered. This is a different game from Ground Zeroes? Double MGS?

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but good sense would point toward it being one part of MGS5, with Ground Zeroes being another part. It's possible that the Ground Zeroes reveal was its own red herring, with the different titles actually referring to different segments of the finished game.

EatChildren

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I see no issue with disinterest from the "new IP" shifting to excitement after learning it's related to Metal Gear. The VGAs are notorious for being a platform to announce cinematic, minimalist gameplay rubbish and, if you were to take the trailer as a new IP, it was hardly anything more.

Minimal gameplay: check.
Emphasis on style over substance: check.
Heavy scripting: check.
Talky talk cinematics: check.

As a new IP I thought it looked dull and uninteresting because, as a game, there's no actual interesting gameplay going on.

But as Metal Gear it changes, because it's no longer a trailer but a puzzle and a tease, deliberately constructed they way it has been to encourage analysis. Now it's less "oh it's a cripple stumbling through a hospital with shootbang" and more "is it Big Boss? Who is the masked man? Why is a Psycho Mantis character there? Why the hallucinations? How does it connect to Ground Zeroes? What are the "phantoms"?", and so on.

As a new IP it is what it is and nothing much more. As a Metal Gear tease it suddenly opens up a whole bunch of questions as to how it relates to the canon and universe, an attractive prospect to a large and excitable franchise fanbase.

Looking back at some of the initial posts, I'm amused by some people's negative response to the idea of a disabled character and the gameplay element of crawling. Perhaps it speaks to how spoiled we are to basically superpowered avatars.

EDIT: Although I think EatChildren is right to contextualize some of the responses in that manner.

Or perhaps it just looked boring as shit

Edit : I actually thought it was MOH: Warfighter 2 or some other up it's own ass Military Shooter at that part

Dude, imagine if this was the trailer for MGS3 a year before it came out, and instead of MGS3 it would be titled "Dead End Nightmare" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXdMXkytVgI.

There is no contradiction or hypocrisy really, a really weird and ambiguous trailer that showed very little gameplay is going to not look good if there isn't good context behind it. Once the context was revealed, the Phantom Pain trailer became a lot more interesting.

Before the 3rd person crawling I thought it was a FPS.
