Paper Mario: Sticker Star |OT| Delicious Flat Characters

at last, for christ's sake
In other RPGs I've played where that happens it will either tell you or make it clear you can't win. In this fight I was doing good amounts of damage before it jumped in the water and I was able to block and heal the damage I was taking for a long time. There was nothing to indicate this wasn't just a phase I had to tank until the boss came out of it then use the battle spinner to kill it before it could heal again.
All the fight needed was one line from Kersti and I would have no problem with this at all.

I can see why people have issues with this but like I said, I can provide a lot of examples of other games where this just doesn't happen. In LOTRO you have those elite monsters roaming around, as in Xenoblade, and there's no indication you cannot beat them.,...the fact you die after five seconds consitutes the best hint, lol. That's why the Cheep Cheep mauling me didn't bother me much

Yeah, I got whooped by the Cheep Cheep and decided to go do other stuff and come back when it was more obvious I'd be able to take it on. Didn't really bother me at all.

The bosses are basically puzzles. You're supposed to figure this stuff out before you waste all your stickers, and that's why you can run away from any boss fight with the same efficacy as regular battles. The bosses can be unforgiving -- or in this case impossible -- unless you have that one specific sticker, but that's just how it goes, annoying as it can be. The game was designed this way intentionally.

Calling bosses "puzzles" is giving the battle system way too much credit. It's as simple as having the right sticker, and a lot of times trying every special sticker you have until one actually works, and oh, by the way, you'll probably just check a FAQ because it's not apparent and you don't carry all 100s+ of the big stickers around with you.

By the way, the game has really grown on me. The level design is so good in World 3 and 4. (And World 4's music = All is forgiven).

No, they're definitely puzzles. You're presented with a variety of visual clues to try and deduce something. That is the essence of a puzzle. If you're trying every sticker you have until you win, you're doing it wrong.

Now, you can call them poorly conceived puzzles (I do), because the clues can be sparse and sometimes require having the thing you need in your possession in order to figure them out.

completely agree with this. Take the Cheep Cheep midboss mentioned a few posts earlier.
There's a toad talking about a giant hook, and that's pretty much it: you have to find this hook
. It isn't enough, either, since you have to use it at the right moment otherwise you'll waste the sticker

Couldn't disagree more with you.

There is a logic to the bosses so far, just requires a bit of lateral thinking.

I'm about to take on the final world. It's been a blast so far, but I'm really not all that thrilled about the boss battles. It's tolerable simply figuring out the correct sticker to use, but you often have to use a specific sticker at a specific time. I often had the correct sticker, but I used it at the incorrect time. However, there is really not much indication when you're supposed to use it.

For example,
the Cheep Cheep was only obvious to me when it jumped in the water. Initially, I didn't know it would jump in the water at all during the course of the battle. Therefore, I used the Hook on the first turn. In another example, it was obvious that the Bat was to be used during the Pokey battle. However, it is most effective when the Pokey is at its maximum height. There really wasn't a clue that compelled me to wait before using the Bat. Unless I missed it, I suppose.

Anyway, I just noticed that the game uses the gyros in the 3DS to simulate the shininess on the stickers. It's a subtle but rather neat effect. I just sat there looking at my sticker book tilting my 3DS as if I were a child receiving my first holographic trading card again.

I did the same thing too. It's quite mesmerizing.

Is there anything I can use to jump higher/farther? I'm stuck on world 3-5 (Loop Loop River) and I'm trying to jump across the river to the island in the middle and I just can't make it.

Edit: never mind I figured it out, invisible blocks grrr

Wow, I didn't notice this. Nice touch, Nintendo.

I guess Kersti telling me after a boss fight that I used up too many stickers again and that I should think about the stickers I choose more is supposed to be the game's way of saying "hey idiot stop doing it wrong" but it makes me feel way better brute forcing the bosses with standard stickers.

Getting that giant Pokey's 300 HP to 0 without
the bat
made that fight feel way more tense and incredibly rewarding when I won.

Alright, I've beaten the game a while ago and going through this thread I've been hearing things about a Sticker Museum. Apparently I completely missed this during the game, so what is it and how to I get there?

Once you get the Mayor out of the fountain, his house opens up in the main square in Decalburg (behind the fountain). In his basement is the museum where you find stickers and put them in there

I found a Luigi in
2-5 and paperise, picked him up and he just legged it, what do I do after? Have I collected him or has he just ran off somewhere else?

I believe Luigi is found in five different locations. You've found one of them. He does the same thing for the other four locations. As far as I know, the only reward for finding him in all five areas is his (rather negligible) appearance in the credits scene.

This game is awesome. Just been going through the levels opening the secret doors.

First time ever I've actually written something down whilst I've been playing. Collating all the objects I find in each level. Might make it a google doc for everyone to see.

just defeated cheep cheep, went down like a ton of bricks

I had real problems with
Cheep Cheep. I worked out to use the hook okay, but had difficulty killing him before he exploded. After three failed attempts I ended up resorting to the Spike Helmet and absorbing the damage (40!).

Gonna go do some secret doors myself now, before finishing off Wiggler.

Absolutely loving this game.

Just finished the game. Wonderful, absolutely delightful game and I'm seriously considering Sticker Star to be the best in the series. I might replay TTYD next week seeing as I have the week off so that might retake the crown soon-ish. It's definitely God Tier Paper Mario. I can see where the criticism is coming from though, I acknowledge it even, but I simply do not agree.

The game could give a few more hints every now and the or not punish the payer by taking away his stickers when you used the wrong one, but other than that the game is full of subtle hints (and lots of not-so subtle) that can really make the player pretty stupid for not getting it. I'll admit right here that I was stumped a few times myself, but this is mostly due to the random locations of some of the thing stickers. I'll usually have the right idea, but not the right sticker.

For instance, late in the game
there's a lava-flow blocking your path and you can place a sticker on the volcano in the background. Logic dictates you have to freeze the lava, but I had no such sticker. Turns out there was a Shaved Ice sticker hidden in the second world (the desert) that I had to use. Apparently I could have also used the refrigerator one that was more easily found, but I never got that.
The location of the right sticker is sometimes not very obvious or logical, hence: you get stuck. But this is just so rare and I don't feel it's that detrimental to the game.

Same with the battle system: a lot of people hate it because they feel it's useless and you don't get rewarded. I say bunk to that. How is this approach different from any shooter (or any game that offers any opposition, really) where you have to shoot the bad guys in order to continue your path? The pleasure comes from the actual shooting of the dudes, or in Sticker Star's case, the defeating of the enemies with stickers. Very, very rarely did I go out of the enemies' way because I didn't feel like fighting. Certainly not moreso than any standard rpg.

Ultimately the game simply takes a different approach to the series. I love the point 'n click adventure DNA the game posseses, but I can certainly see how people would not like it. It just sucks that people will outright say: "this game is bad" where it most certainly is not. This game has so much creativity and the game just gets better and better the more you play. The level-design is fantastic and incredibly varied, there's lots of hidden secrets to uncover of you just have a keen enough eye and you'll notice so many hints all over the place. I was never frustrated with the game, only delighted.

Just don't come in expecting another TYD, this game doesn't want to be that game and players should just accept that fact and play it on its own terms. I find it hard to believe that people can really hate on this game just because it's not like another game they love. Sticker Star is still very much Paper Mario, it's not like they went all Resident Evil on us, even Super Paper Mario is well and truly a Paper Mario game, it's just different.

In a day and age where most sequels are the most unimaginative, bland, predictable games you could think of, Sticker Star shines like the rarest stickers in the game. It's a true shame that people apparently want nothing more than a re-iteration of their favorite game instead of something bold. In a way I get it: not everything needs to re-invent the wheel, but I feel like they really hit a homerun with this one and that's why it just pains me to see it's received so lukewarmly.

I've been playing it for around 14 hours, and JUST realized something: the music is rather spectacular, isn't it? That town theme didn't seem like much at first, but it has grown on me so much. It's just super cool. And the map music. So simple but so good. It's so well arranged, and it's obvious the composer has spent tons of time perfecting the tracks. The music in 4-1 is the same. Simple, nice melody that could have been just nice, but the arrangement develops and turns into something absolutely brilliant. And that third boss is just awesome, much thanks to the music. Greatest Paper Mario soundtrack so far without a doubt!

This Squid is absolutely abusing me. I get that I am supposed to use the
Sponge
, but am I supposed to kill him before he gets to use that poison move again? Because that seems pretty hard when you can only have one "Thing" sticker of any one kind at a time. Do they all do damage?

Yep. One of my favourite Nintendo soundtracks ever. Best part of the game.

I don't think it's supposed to be difficult to defeat it before it uses that ability again. Maybe a battle spinner combo would help.

You can spend some coins by pressing X again, which gives you 2 out of 3 of the pictures so you're guaranteed at least 2 moves.

You're supposed
to use the sponge just before he spits the ink on you. Happens after he hits you 4 times

Once done it's much much easier.

What I do with the Spinner is look for an easily discernible icon out of the bunch, which only appears once per spin, like the POW Block or the Lightning Bolt. I usually aim for the POW Block.

I just try to ease into the rhythm of each full spin by observing for awhile and then it's pretty easy to nail it. I always get at least two matched without paying the coins and the third about half the time.

Because I apparently have an illness, I just finished getting all 8 banners. The last of which was me grinding out perfect battle after perfect battle. I had to grind out the Excellent attack one, the one for spending 10K coins, and the Jackpot one before that. Basically, I just spent a lot of time in 4-1 getting those. I'm not normally one who has to 100% games, but for some reason I liked this one and 100%ing it seemed like the thing to do.

Why 4-1?

If anyone wants a guaranteed 2 matches in the battle spinner without spending extra coins, watch for the moment when it just flashes between the coin and mushroom several times. It lasts for about a second, but if you get all three within that time frame, you will at least get 2 out of 3.

Because you get tons of coins, their are 3-5 enemies in a single battle, and all of them can easily be defeated with a shiny flower/shell in one hit.

So I'm stuck in World 5-6,
how do I successfully run away from battle after putting a Chomp Chomp to sleep with the Baahammer?
I've never run from a battle before, is there a truck to doing so? Mario keeps falling over...

I think you're just unlucky. Out of habit, I bash A. I have no idea if it helps. But then, I've only ever failed to escape once...

Finished this and completed my Sticker Museum last night. Don't know if I can be bothered to grind 4-1 for the rest of the flags though,

Fantastic game. Would play again.

Mashing A does help, in fact :p

The screen darkens the more you press it, and the darker the screen the better your chance of escaping

Thanks for the heads up.

i bought an xl yesterday, i don't know why.

i might just try and complete everything else then do the final battle.

incredible game.

This game is really awesome. I like the images and also the sticker star. Some people criticize it. It is true there is some deficiency in it. In fact no game is perfect. But i hope there will be some improvement in it.

When ever i play this game i enjoy a lot. I love the images of this game, battles and the excitement which it provides. Only first ten minutes i feel this slow the it becomes very special.
