VGLeaks: PlayStation 4 "Orbis" Roadmap

SO I don't get it. Why would there be a melt down if it's 5-10 percent better then orbis?
Then factor in Kinect's overhead and whatever non gaming CPU cycles. I wished for a future with 4 general processors and 32 satellite processors on 1 die. Would have been wicked. But if we get 10x the performance then it's all good I guess.

Naw I knew what you mean I just meant I can't see people get upset if Sony isn't the strongest again. I mean ps1 and ps2 weren't beast in tech or power. It was just more exotic then the others. PS3 was really the first time PS was considered "A beast" in pure power lol.

Righto. Exactly true.

I don't think there'll be much complaints from Sony fans if there is such a miniscule difference in power, which seems to be the case. It'll come down to the first party developers at that point to rinse whatever they can out of the hardware. And, well, Sony has Naughty Dog, SSM and GG under their umbrella. One only needs to look at what they've done on the PS3 to know there's little to worry about. There isn't that level of tried and tested talent anywhere else, except with Nintendo, and they're stuck with a console which is radically weaker.

It's not like third parties will be optimising multi-platform efforts.

Ok, fine. But on paper the PS3 seemed like it could dwarf the 360 in 2005.

On paper, PS2 seemed like the the most powerful thing ever made by man. You could jack into the Matrix with it.

It's hype.

We still don't know if Sony might also have this stuff in PS4

Would kinda look very poor on MS if not only Sony was going with more powerful off the shelve stuff (direct comparisons), and on top of it have all the shit MS spent time working on in their design too. (After coming to AMD much later)

It just doesn't seem feasible that these systems will be architecturally the same, MS/AMD relationship would become terrible.

Even 13 years later, the PS2 seems to me like this majestic console with holy powers. It's weird as hell, must have been the advertising and strength of the Sony brand thrown into the mix.

Why?

A bit of extra performance won't make you happier. You buy the console for the content.

No actually that will make me happier lol. Even a 3-5fps advantage in certain games is very much welcome, especially if they're already hovering around the 30fps or less bracket.

So was any additional information actually leaked. I just scanned through the last 3 pages and see nothing. Also canned through the D3D link and saw nothing....

Specs look interesting. I think having dedicated audio hardware is a good idea, it will free up a CPU thread and I think uncompressed audio on games is going to be less common next gen so that's good.

Also having video encoder/decoder hardware may mean that Sony are shunting their media operations for PS4 onto dedicated hardware rather than using precious CPU cycles. Since AV decoders and encoders can be bought for a few dollars I think Sony are being sensible. I hope the video hardware is compatible with HEVC/H.265 and XAVC (Sony's own 4k codec).

For bluray or 4k playback I don't think it matters, unless this low power thing is relevant - the console cpuld do it with a fraction of available power. But it might be useful for compressing the Ps4 output to eg send to a vita or tablet for remote play

The reason people still talk about ps2 was due to the fact it was a freak of nature.

Like 70 percent of the market? With it's weak ass hardware? Sold YEARS after ps3 launched. Thats insane. No one, not even Sony will ever reach that type of hold again especially with mobile gaming on the rise. Thats why they were dumbfounded this gen when no one was trying to pay that 599 US Dollars at first. I remember how they were basically trying to "dreamcast" MS back in 2006.

Talk about a changing market. I'm glad it's more evenly split now.

I think all you need profit per system on day one then you'll able no problem to spend more advertising and games. If you don't get profit and not sell well, then it will be hell to keep and expanding market.

Sony and MS may have backup because they don't only sell game.

Well, if you wanna be a tech enthusiast first and a game fan second, you're better off buying a system that you want for exclusives and buy a PC for multiplatform games.

Otherwise, it just comes across as a bit of a "I need my dick to be bigger than his" kind of thing.

Ps3 was more powerful, and we still got worse ports. So, I think you'll cope.

PS1 and PS2 were both cutting edge when they launched.

Sure, but neither were considered the most advanced systems of their generation. PS1 and PS2 were underdogs, it was only with PSP and PS3 that it seemed like Sony was willing to brute force there way to the top of the technology ranking.

I think, with history in mind, it's really not that big of a deal for a PlayStation console to not be the most powerful of the gen. It all comes down to software support...this is where Sony needs to be willing to spend the cash.

After thinking about it Sony going to have very hard battle .
If games look as good on both consoles it going to come down to services and features.
Which MS seem to be allowing you to do more while playing games which is a big plus .
Don't think Sony first party going to be enough

Well, it had holy powers back in the day. I remember playing games like MGS 2, FFX, GTA Vice City, Medal of Honor, Silent Hill 2 shortly after i got my PS2 and they just blew me way.

Listen man, I was a PS2 gamer and I still remember my pals telling me how the PS2 was more powerful than the Xbox. I knew they were crazy, but they believed it.

because I want Sony's first party to have the absolute best they can to show of that tech, that and I generally prefer buying multi platform titles on PS3 due to free online.

While that is certainly true this gen, it may no longer be a relevant factor on Orbis/Durango.... We'll have to wait and see what Sony does.

AMD would get into shitloads of trouble I presume.

Also both customize for different factors of course.
And to everyone thinking that these 2 companies are sitting down next to one another and so BOTH will have identical customizations and stuff. Nada. Both have a certain power/price point and make their own decisions. They go about it different ways and with different targets. I am sure at times they may have gotten a hint now and then its not like they have Illuminati meetings together.

Exactly. The Saturn was touted as being more powerful than the PS1, and look at how long that system lasted for.

So services or exclusive games?
Seems like an easy decision to me, but I buy a console to play games.

I wish the market was more like it was ten years ago, because even then consoles were selling fine and there was more interest in developing for dedicated handhelds. You didn't have the choice of what to play mobile games on, so it was more of a win-win situation.

Growing up with NES/SNES, at the time I felt the PS1 and eventually PS2 provided titles that were out of boundaries to what we were used to. Japanese RPGs were unique and provided deep storylines which Nintendo games never provided. There were no equivalent of Einhander (Squaresoft), FF7, MGS, Driver and GT on any other systems. Having 1000+ games to choose from didn't hurt either.

There are two things that will make this potentially difficult for Sony:

- Price
- Pay for Online

If they launch within reason of Durango, and keep the free online, they're sitting comfortably for the next generation. I really don't see them not leading unless Microsoft pulls off a Wii, which is unlikely if anything. If the current generation showed anything, it's that the Playstation brand is very, very strong. It's not an exaggeration to call how they handled the PS3 a disaster. Just mistake after mistake after mistake. They still managed to recover though.

They just need to continue providing good value through PS Plus, a steady stream of first party exclusives, and be a great general media device. If they manage to mess up again, then they really deserve to fail.

The competition between Orbis and Durango is going to be North America. That's where MS is strongest and where Sony lost a lot of market share.

Heard a new rumor about the PS4 gamepad from someone who works for a big developer who claims to have examined it:

1. PS Move tech built in
2. Has a trackpad in the middle
3. Controller ID shown in color (did not understand what this meant, waiting for clarification, either means multicolor LED's or a led display)
4. PS4 Coming December 2013 and games can use up to 100GB of data. Don't know if this means a different kind of blu-ray or just games that come on 2 blu-rays.

Do you not remember the 360 in 2005-2009? So many new IPs, exclusive deals for episodic content, etc.. I feel like the Kinect was a way to keep the 360 going forward, while the best people of the Xbox team put all of their had work into the Durango. The big guns come out in June.
