FINAL FANTASY Community Thread: XV Mainline Entries and Counting

Sub-topic- Why does everyone pretend FFV doesn't exist?
GAF certainly doesn't!

Came to post this, find myself beaten.

I'll also add The Gapra Whitewood. It's one of my favorite pieces of FF music ever. So beautiful and calming.

As for who I'd like to see score an FF game, hmmm. I actually think Shouji Meguro (P4) is a good suggestion. It would be weird and different, for sure, but that's what I love about FF - trying new things w/each installment, and the vocal tracks in XIII-2 really grew on me.

Also, not really an out-there suggestion, but Yoko Shimomura. I just want to see her compose everything, really. Been listening to the Parasite Eve soundtrack a lot lately. Sooooooo good.

EDIT:

That reminds me that no one ever talks about FFXI's music.
I really wish I hadn't missed out on XI back in its heyday. The tracks included in Theatrhythm are just wonderful and really made me want to play the game.

Two picks off the top of my head:

FFXIII --- Mysteries Abound
Dang, totally do not remember this piece at all. It's great!

Why not? That was the sort of thing FF needed. Games have been including vocal tracks for a long time now (like, ToP's OP song on the SFC, or the vocal themes in Sonic R, etc.), and it was about time FF finally caught up with the rest of the world. I liked it and I thought the obvious genre variance on that soundtrack was a success.

I don't have a problem with vocal track per se. It just depend on the setting and the tone of the game. Rap/Hip hop soundtracks work with Persona 3/4 because it is set in modern day with its main characters being high school students. For example, in FFXIII-2 it felt a bit jarring when World's Collide kicks in but I absolutely love the New Bodhum theme

Well she is scoring Versus.

But you know...that game probably doesn't even exist. I also really love Parasite Eve's soundtrack, it's so good.

I want more Sekito and whoever else did music for The Last Remnant. The battle themes get most of the attention I think, but I really liked several of the town themes and dungeon/area themes too.

I really do want to see Sekito score an FF, myself. Considering he's really into metal and Dream Theater, I'd love to hear what he'd come up with. :D

Falcom's an obvious one, and I guess another obvious one for me is the Sega Sound Team (mostly Kenichi Tokoi: Terminal Velocity, Planet Wisp Act 3, Shamar Day; Tomoya Ohtani: Aquarium Park Act 1, Death Chamber, Dragon Road Night, Super Sonic vs Perfect Dark Gaia; and Fumie Kumatani: High and Broken, Theme of E123γ). Such a wide diversity of genres covered by the SST and I'd love to see what they'd do with an FF considering how freaking awesome the Unleashed soundtrack is. Also they would finally be able to afford to use an orchestra for everything.

Also Takahito Eguchi (FFX-2, The Bouncer, now working for Sega and doing stuff like Rhythm Thief and Sonic) would be able to come back to SE to do a few things even though I don't think he liked the way he left the company.

I don't have a problem with vocal track per se. It just depend on the setting and the tone of the game. I respectfully disagree, partially because I think it does make sense considering much of FF13-2 is set in a futuristic society. Think of the rap as spoken word dating back to the 14th century griots. Or the hip-hop as an evolution of sub-saharan african music / early dub. It's much like an evolution of the tribalism of Pulse and the modernization and synthetic nature of Cocoon in that regard.

Do bear in mind that I'm super-tired so half of the stuff I'm saying is picked from dream land.

I actually think the jarring vocals really work because XIII-2 is just such a bizarre game. Like, there is so much weird shit going on w/paradoxes and Yeuls and angry chocobos and Lightning gifting a Mog weapon to her sister across time and space and Snow's hair and Captain Cryptic and Super Sentai miniflans, why not throw some random ass hip hop in there as well? Everything but the kitchen sink.

Well she is scoring Versus.

LOL what is this Versus that you speak of.

Still get chills every time I hear Primal Eyes. Every time.

Jeeze, I kinda feel like I should buy FFXIII-2 but...it just looks so bad. Nothing I had a problem with the original (the battlesystem, tone, music, monster design) is fixed and they retcon a perfectly fine ending with an insanely convuluted time travel plot.

It was kinda funny...I was talking to my friend about the new Pokemon games and telling her she should learn how to like new stuff and I boot up FFXII and am, like, "Jeeze...it's been seven years since the last good Final Fantasy...Goddammit."

That New Bodhum song's pretty good, though.

Yeah; by contrast, I didn't think much of FF13-2 outside of the soundtrack, Noel, and the Gilgamesh DLC. But it like every other FF before it, it's incredibly divisive, so maybe if you see it on the cheap or if you can manage to try the demo out, you could give it a shot.

I guess FFX-2's Wind Crest, Zanarkand Ruins, Mushroom Rock Road are some of my other lesser-mentioned favourites.

Wind Crest doesn't get mentioned that much because it's on the LM soundtrack, but I think it's better just because it has more of a sense of progression than Light and Waves. Zanarkand Ruins shows that the soundtrack borrows from some open source samples out there, but the bagpipes and piano interlude make the theme retain the overall feel of loneliness that the original area represents. And Mushroom Rock Road has some electronic vibes to it, but as usual with the other FFX-2 tracks, the best portions of it lie in the piano, small injection of woodwind and snare percussion.

I understand that not a lot of people generally dig the latter two, but I kinda get what they were going for with the abstract piano work on the album.

Shame that Matsueda left the industry partially because of how it was received, and Eguchi ended up leaving as well to freelance instead.

But, uh, they ended up getting married to each other a few years ago, so that's nice, right?

I blame Toriyama for Matsueda leaving.

He's my go-to guy for scapegoating.

But I loved the stuff she did for The Bouncer and Front Mission.

I always get sad when talking about X-2's music. Criminally underrated and unfairly hated when the game came out. Some truly outstanding tracks. I can't believe the composer quit her career over it's reception, so unfair.

I like many of FFXIII's intermediary tracks, like Face It Later, Forever Fugitives, and Sustained By Hate. While they're usually short and play on established leitmotifs, they're quite pleasant to listen to. Two songs towards the very end of the soundtrack, which orchestrate the song's prologue and main themes -- Fabula Nova Crystallis and Miracles -- are some of my favorites in the entire game. And Yaschas Massif is a great little tune as well, I think.

Miracles is amazing. That part when the main theme kicks in is just incredible. I also love Yaschas Massif, such a neat track for a video game. It does sound like elevator music, but good elevator music.

Seriously? That's a god damn shame and a terrible loss. She was incredible and FFx-2 has some really memorable tunes.

I hope some of the people who obsessively and religiously let the world how much they hated FFX-2 see that. Maybe they'll feel the slightest shred of empathy and feel bad that maybe they didn't have to try THAT hard.

She'd also said that by the end of composition she was rather stressed out, her health suffered, and she was tired of it; and people's negative reaction to the album didn't really help either.

Well to be fair, there's only 1 mainline Final Fantasy game out between those 7 years while there have been plenty of Pokemon games out during that time period :p.

I wouldn't recommend FFXIII-2 to you at full price but since you can get it for dirt cheap now, you should give it a go. It really is a breath of fresh air coming from the linearity of FFXIII: You no longer have any cap on your Level and you can unlocks different paradigm roles early on so there's more freedom in battles. There's actually other stuff to do outside of the main story.

Despite the many flaws of this game (its ridiculous ass-pull plot, Toriyama's insistence on shoving Lightning down our throat etc....) there are some really atmospheric moments in the game. For example, I really enjoy turning on the rain at Archylte Steppe and just simply wander around.

Just now learning about Matsueda. Such a shame, the only part I disliked about X-2 were the character redesigns and some of the new ones. Everything else was great. :(

So I just jumped in this thread... What's happening exactly?

Well, damn... you reached the other side. Sparki did, as well. Welcome.

Anyway, message me if you have anything to add man. Project has been teased more than enough, it's only a matter of time now.

ok, this got old. pls take your fanfiction flirtation elsewhere, you two.

No hard feelings.

Still looking for my camera's usb cord by the way. My desk is such a mess.

That's extremely unfortunately. Out of the the flaws the FFX-2 have, the soundtrack is not one of them. I guess people just simply lump it when they blindly hate on the game.

Wow, this is a damn shame. X-2 had Eternity ~ Memory of Lightwaves, which is just god-tier among FF music. :-(

I should clarify myself. I didn't mean in term of appearance, I was talking about the fact that Lightning have suddenly a Omnipresent warrior goddess who sprout off 'deep' saying at the start of earlier Chapters. It reaks of Toriyama proclaiming: 'Look how awesome and badass she isnow!' I also don't like Serah's obsession with Lightning because Toriyama haven't actually show me how close the Farron Sisters really is. For all I can tell, Serah's only motivation for saving Lightning is that because she's her sister.

Disclaimer: I absolutely agree that the relationship between Lightning and Serah has been very poorly handled across the series and is something that should have been fleshed out long ago, and not just in the novellas. That said, Lightning being Serah's sister is, as far as I'm concerned (as an elder sister), more than enough motivation for wanting to save her, just as it was for Lightning in XIII. But! I think there's an additional layer of motivation there that the game clearly highlights: Serah is the only person who remembers seeing Lightning at the end of XIII. Everyone else thinks she died, or is a crystal w/Fang and Vanille and no one but Snow believes Serah when she says that she saw Lightning on that day. If I were Serah, three years of no one around me remembering an important event the way that I do, of no one believing me about something I saw, of my sister just up and disappearing - it would seriously mess with my head and make me question my own sanity. Given the opportunity to pursue the truth and prove to everyone, and especially myself, that I'm not crazy, I think I'd leap at it the way Serah does when Noel shows up and claims to have seen her sister.

I agree with your point but even if there's motivation for saving Lightning, I find it hard to believe that the Faron Sisters are close enough that Serah constantly refers to Lightning in her monologues in the earlier Chapters - she barely talk about other people important to her life like Snow or the NORA. I get that there's some sort of bond between the siblings but I always see it as out of obligation: (i.e. Serah feel guilty that Lightning have to sacrifice her childhood to raise her and risk her life to save her in FFXIII) rather than the sisters getting along like normal siblings would.

XIII has such mind-blowing landscapes, molds of contemplative moments. There are times in my run I stopped going forward (not like I could have gone in another direction anyway) and sit back, just for the sake to tilt the right analog stick all around.

My top 3 would be...

The Gabra Whitewood

Sulyya Springs

Sulyya Springs' end (forgot the actual name)

Looking forward to what Versus offers in that regard.

Question for FF GAF: for completions sake, I'd like to finish all of the non-MMO mainline FF games and their sequels/spin offs. I've already beaten all of the main games, and most of the sequels - but two remain: Dirge of Cerebus and The After Years. From what I understand, they are both terrible. Should I even bother playing either? I like VII well enough and IV was alright, but neither is anywhere near the top of my personal FF canon, so I am not particularly drawn to them for the sake of story continuation alone.

It is jaw droppingly beautiful. I loaded it up the other day and was running around the Hanging Edge and was struck by how great it looks, and how there hasn't been much yet out there that matches it in the last three years.

Dirge of Cerebus is short. I didn't like it at all, but at least it didn't take too much time. I honestly don't remember the story.

I seemed to like The After Years more than most, although I wouldn't consider it good. When all the chapters are added up, it actually is a marginally significant length. The first 7/8 (I forget how many there are) parts are 2-4 hour segments where you get various parties going through one (sometimes two) of the FFIV dungeons as a mysterious cyan-haired girl is causing mischief. The enemies are mostly rehashes, but there are a couple of new foes. The parties you get at this point are largely independent, usually mixing older characters with newer ones. Besides a couple new abilities (and the new members themselves) the major new gameplay system are link attacks where two people can perform an attack together. It's actually not really necessary to progress through the game at all though, you could ignore them if you wanted to.

The final part of the game is a long multi-floor type dungeon with minimal story elements until the very end. Here you can use whatever party you want and swap at will (although some characters are better choices than others). You fight many bosses in this part, most of which are repeats from FFIV. There are a couple of cameo appearances, by the original 4 elemental bosses as well as some from FFVI
Doomtrain and Ultros

The story itself is a little interesting to start with as there is this air of mystery, but ultimately it's kinda flat.

Dirge of Cerberus is worth playing once just for the experience of having played it. Kinda like Sonic '06 is a rite of passage for Sonic fans.

What? No.

Sonic 2006 is garbage, but it's funny because it's garbage. So it's fun to play drunk or play with friends or watch people stream it or whatever. We call it a SonicGAF Badge of Honour because it's hilarious to read what people are thinking when they're playing it. Also you can't learn about the series' strengths unless you know its weaknesses and how low it got.

Dirge is just boring.

I see Dirge the same way! I've had plenty of fun at that game's expense over the years in the same way that people treat '06. The game will elicit some reaction out of you at the very least.

Plus, it's not SE's ever gone back to Dirge's style of gameplay, so he'd be experiencing *something* new.

Dirge of Cerberus is garbage, but that's because it completely fails to meet all its potential. It has ALL the pieces to be amazing and then fails to meet every single one. Like, almost deliberately.

It's sad. Though that's a bit harsh and I suppose I'd best not drive people away. It's still quite playable and fun at times. It's just completely average across the board.

I think I usually enjoy monster systems because it opens up the strategy more and allows more customization that picking a character from your set party. I wouldn't want every game to be monster party, but occasionally it's fun to play around and the feeling when one of your creations becomes a baddie killing machine is pretty awesome.

So because the GAF plays thread is now dead, I'll be continuing my run through the series in this thread. I hope that does not offend anyone.

Final Fantasy IV
Slew the Brachioraidos. It was ridiculously hard until Kain's Abel's Lance randomly cast Tornado, causing Brachioraidos to kill itself automatically. Which was hilarious and good.
Final Fantasy IV TAY So I've been doing Rydia's challenge dungeon, and I much prefer the PSP way: that is, far fewer of the BS "YOU GOT A LAME ASS TREASURE" rewards at the end. I'm just trying to get the Sprint Ring and I'll move on to Yang's Tale.

Final Fantasy V: Legend of the Crystals (Episode 1) Kinda interesting to learn that Bartz 1) Did not marry Lenna, since the Klauser and Tycoon lines are distinct, 2)Did have children, who had blue hair (Faris anyone?), and 3) hear it pronounced Batz, Exodees, and see a featherless chocobo. This thing is a little weird, but I actually kind of feel like it's an adequate sequel to FFV in tone, if not content. As in, Pretz and Linaly's hijinks feel much like the goofy, off-kilter antics of Bartz and Lenna, and I dunno, it just feels FFV to me, even if it isn't great content and the idea of making it an anime instead of a game sucks. It reminds me of old Miyazaki movies, especially the lengthy upskirts on little girls.

Final Fantasy VII Slew Ultimate Weapon at long last. Not really sure what else there is to do on disc 3. I guess I should prepare to slay Emerald and Ruby, and I should track down all the Ultimate Weapons and Level 4 Limit Breaks, but I dunno if there's any reason to bother going after Master Materia. I mean, I have some mastered Materia, but full sets? Hmmmm.

Final Fantasy Dimensions Finally called it a day and decided to just march on with the game. Still haven't Lvl 3'd every class, but yeah. Currently have Sol and Aegis as Black Mages, and Sarah and Dusk are Knights. Almost out of the local cave and into DUN DUN DUN DEIST, THE DRAGON KINGDOM.

Final Fantasy Adventure Even though I think that Sword of Mana is a competent and good remake, in many ways it is very different from FFA. They share the same basic plot, and the quest is laid out in much the same way, but events transpire differently in SwoM than in FFA. In SwoM, Willy lives, Dark Lord is related to
Medusa
the characters of Isabella and Gourmand are introduced to tie in to SD3, Hasim is nowhere to be found, and most upsettingly, the Roboco (Robotic Chocobo) is removed. For that reason, and because I legitimately love FFA, I'm playing through it again.

I've been meaning to post the next part of FF6 but I'm just too busy right now.

Plus... I think I needed a longer break from writing up LP posts. They do take up quite a chunk of time and coming off of Soundtrack of the Year and Game of the Year, I am tired. :lol

So by all means, keep posting in the thread unless Aeana locks it.

What's the best place to buy an Ultimania if you don't reside in Japan?

Ebay, CDJapan, Square Enix Shop (thus personalshoppers), Play-Asia.

Yeah, it's true especially for FFVII. I wonder how cool will be to have a remake giving true justice to all that good arts.

Haven't played 6 about a week. Made it further than my last play through but something about WoR doesn't appeal to me. Starting Earthbound and then Mother 3 didn't help. I'm definitely gonna try to go back and finish it after M3 is done.

It does start off rough because once you get the airship, you don't know where to go next but once you get a few more people back, it helps a lot!

Can someone point me to the best FF Let's Plays?

I'm primarily interested in 7, 10, and 12. Let's Plays with interesting facts and secrets are preferred. Anyone know of any?

Soooo I recently replayed and completed FF IV (Great great game by the way. Very fun, if you haven't played it, you should get to it. Just don't play the DS version...ewwwww) and I was tempted to replay IX. I think I've replayed it recently, I'm not sure to be honest. The more I play it, the more I think it becomes my most favorite FF game. I think first off it has the best opening scene...FF7 certainly set the bar but IX goes for the original route by having a gang of thieves moonlight as a theatre group while attempting to kidnap the princess...not bad if I do say so myself. My usual party was Zidane, Vivi, Eiko and Freya.

Why that team? Well first off, I don't think you can punt Zidane from the group anyway and he's too cool to drop so he stays. I know how to power Thievery up but I mainly use him for stealing or inflicting status attacks. Vivi is there of course for the elemental damage (Shame about Doomsday though) and Eiko is there mainly for healing...and the occasional damage. I actually prefer her over Dagger since Dagger spends a good chunk of the plot...well being sort of useless. Eiko is a brat but she's an entertaining brat to me!

As for the last slot, I usually go with either Steiner or Freya but I'm partial to Freya because she's cooler than Steiner, hits just as hard and is a freaking Lancer. On one hand it doesn't seem like a good idea for your tank to be up in the air so much but after powering up her one attack (Dragon Crest...and yes I did power it up fully...stop looking at me like that) she's pretty darn strong.
