Haha, Scum, lots o' stuff. The most immediate is a major change to Daily Achievements. You'll see they're new as soon as you log in- and completing them gets you a new currency called Laurels, which you can use to buy pretty good stuff, including Ascended gear.
Where do you get Karma boxes from?
A vendor in Orr, dunno which myself!

Sorry guys, I've sinned. I panicked right before going to work today, knowing that it was patch day, and transferred to JQ for more wuvwuv. I'll be guesting back on SBI immediately though....

I'll be on later tonight looking to do some Fractals. I still need the 7 for my monthly. I also want to see how the balance works out for people doing levels beyond their own level.

1.13GB.

EDIT: A few people on reddit are reporting various sizes, but all 1GB+. Nothing bigger than 1,164MB it seems.
LOL, so much for playing tonight then I guess, I'm only 1/3 of the way there and I've got an early meeting tomorrow. Guess I'll go lay down and check on it in a few hours.

just hit 80 last night with my engi. thanks for the help you guys. Now it's time to deck out my engineer so she looks super fly. Now I got to start doing fractals and the story mode of the dungeons and wvw. Maybe i'll try to get a legendary lol or start a new character like a mesmer.

I want to spend at least a good amount of time in wvw since I really like the concept.

Thanks for grinding out that fractal run, guys, and for bailing us out, Usea.

For anyone who can't read (like me), you can now substitute out in Fractals as if it were any other dungeon.

Many professions require upward of level 60 to acquire the necessary traits for their builds to truly shine. Specifically, a P/V/T geared, cantrip-specced D/D ele is one of the most indestructible classes in the current metagame, with the ability to flee from virtually any encounter.

Oooooh, Ok.

... Well, I would just love for them to make levels an account thing so that I don't have to beef up every character I make when all I'm trying to do is see how much I like them. Guess that's too much to ask :/

One solution is to go to sPvP, where you have the full complement of skills and traits automatically available. You can test things out there if you're not afraid to get stomped. ;)

The volcanic fractal may be the worst designed encounter in any of my mmo experience. Nothing says fun like completing two fractals only to have it as the third and having to quit because its impossible with your group comp.

I transferred and not regretting it a bit, wvwvw on JQ is awesomeeeeeeeeee!
Can't believe how many thingees you can buy with Laurels... good stuffs.
Need a month to grind tho, not bad for casuals I guess but you still need to do daily quests... daily for one 30-35 laurel item, or 20 days + monthly.

In the Heart of the Mists you can test out a fully geared level 80 version of your class with any weapon, skill and trait combination to your heart's content against various training dummies. Try making a new character and going right there to see how you feel and maybe it'll help you decide on a class. :) If you don't have the desire to level more than one character in the first place, I definitely recommend trying this before you get too deep into the game with a class you don't think you like. You can of course participate in full PvP with this "instant max" character.

The thing is, leveling your character is how you get acquanited both with the core mechanics of the game, the unique mechanics of your class, and the specific mechanics of the build you want to run. Each class has a different curve. I'm not surprised that you had an odd experience with a mesmer around level 15, as they have a quite steep learning curve and the early game before you get some functional traits is brutal. However, they wind up being (in my humble opinion) one of the most powerful, versatile classes in the game.

edit: Btw, I looked back, maybe you ought to give scepter/dagger a shot with your ele? I like it a lot though it's a less common set. You get access to a bunch of the cool dagger skills including Ride the Lightning and some great fields, without needing to get as close in basically melee range to do damage.

That doesn't sound quite right; what problems did you run into? That fractal consists of one of the easiest of all the fractal "bodies," and a very challenging and unique boss. I can't imagine there being a particular group composition unable to do it (or any aspect of the fractals).

Assuming there are no other ways to grab laurels, yeah, it's roughly month for a free piece of ascended gear on top of the other daily/monthly rewards you still get. For the most part the daily requirements we've seen are very much the kind of things you'll knock 75% or so out of the way just by logging in and playing in some way, then filling in the stragglers.

Speaking of which, I need to do a tour of Tyrian jumping puzzle entrances tonight to get my monthly done. Anybody else still need that?

yea after reaching 80 I do have a couple problems with targeting that I was hoping you guys would know about.

Like if I switch targets after the one im on is dead, is there a way to make my character just auto attack without me pressing 1 or w/e my aa skill is?

Also since I rotate the camera a whole lot with right click, I get mad when it accidentally clicks on an ally or something else when there are a lot right next to me and I don't see it/it takes a while to get back on the same target. Any way to stop right click from doing anything other than camera movement?

That and I wish there was a button that would auto rotate the camera to where my next target is b/c i have trouble finding it during dungeons/wvw/etc.

So Flame and Frost... The Flame Legion and the Sons of Svanir?

We don't know yet, the event is supposed to go live today at Noon Pacific (3pm eastern). Those are good guesses though, I think they've said that there won't be any new dragons for this event so those sound like the two most obvious threats. They're already a pain in the ass in both regions already.

As far as I know you won't start auto-attacking any target unless you get hit by it, but you can just use whatever the first other skill you'd be using anyway (say... 4) and you'll be auto-attacking with whatever you have selected (likely 1) after that.

I have heard many times about the right-click on allies thing, it sounds very annoying. It's not something I've ever run into because of the mechanics of my control scheme. You might very well want to check out the Combat Mode mod/tweak, or if you feel like going a little more radical, playing with a gamepad.

Regarding auto-rotating the camera... while I understand having to swing it to find your next target can be annoying, it's definitely a design decision. I know that at least my Mesmer and especially Thief are very appreciative that their targets can't auto-rotate their cameras to look at them. :p A lot of their benefit comes from disorienting people as much as possible.
So Flame and Frost... The Flame Legion and the Sons of Svanir?
Very interesting theory. The two zones each have big meta events linked to those factions. If they've teamed up to summon something it would make sense that they could force out a lot of the civilian bystanders set up in the foothills. Lore-wise I'm not sure how they'd get along exactly- the Flame Legion are the only outright "evil" faction that's not explicitly under the control of an Elder Dragon.

So this last update just made the game a total grindfest.

I'm out.

So did the last one, and the one before that, apparently, so now I can't tell if people saying stuff like this are trolling or actually serious. I often wonder what people use as their basis for comparison, it seems like "If I have to do it more than twice, it's a grind".

Care to elaborate a little more on what exactly makes it a grindfest?

But it really isn't. Yes, it's annoying that you need 30 laurels(which are unique, meaning if you want to equip an alt...that's another month, assuming they NEVER implement a way to buy amulets/other pieces of ascended gear through fractal tokens), but really what purpose does that piece of gear do for you? It gives a SLIGHT bonus to exotic stats. It's useful in fractals if you are at a high enough level(but honestly I'm quite bored of them since there is no "reward"). On top of that, you will be getting laurels for your current achievement points...

If anything, this really makes it LESS of a grind, as you have yet ANOTHER avenue to get rings/amulets/infusions, as well as pieces of armor, dyes, crafting starters, etc. On top of that, you also have the karma boxes which are a way to free-up resources sitting dormant(and get shards, lodestones, etc).

Put another way, if he actually was referring to the Laurels...

They made one activity in the game less repetitive while increasing its rewards.
I don't know why I have to hold down a button to move forward. Why can't I just press it once?

I like how after playing the game since launch, I can make a new character and level so much quicker than ever before. It helps to know where everything is.

Edit: Also it's a miracle that I managed to get the Combo Finisher achievement within a 20 minute span yesterday. It was soooo broken.

I mean, the daily achievements were already there, now doing them gets you a handful of silver, karma (which can now (sort of) be converted to silver), a chance at other goodies like the BL salvage kit, and NOW a laurel, which can be traded for all kinds of stuff. This is bad?

I think the enemies had to be finished off with the combo finisher, it wasn't enough just to blast finish a fire field for might or whirl finish for the shield. I think.

Don't miss out on the fact that... if the complaint was "too much repetition for too little reward," the daily achievements used to be literally the exact same tasks every day, whereas now they change every day. Without losing out on any of the previous rewards, with a whole new category of reward added.

And none of it at all necessary to do in the first place :-/
