PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I'm curious as to if anyone of you guys have replaced the screen that comes with the PSP to a better screen?

Would this be feasible?
If I can find a better LCD screen or an OLED screen, would it be possible to replace the screen?

Hi GAF. Finally decided to get back into PSP after finding my PSP-1000 (and after buying some things on the PSN store that I can't currently play :). I have 3.71 on my PSP 2000 and M33 installed. Do I need to upgrade to 6.60 stock and then apply a CFW? Can I upgrade to 6.60 stock without it doing bad things to my PSP?

Also, off topic, but did they yank Echochrome? I didn't see it on the store.

EDIT: Also, is 32GB the most the PSP can use? Thinking about getting a 2X SD card to Pro Duo adapter.

EDIT 2: And the 1000 can do everything that the 2000 can? Same memory stick size and firmware possibilities? That's pretty cool. Maybe I will do that.

My God, that was easy. I'm very surprised that Sony wasn't more aggressive about updating modified systems. Pleasantly, though.

I missed the Echochrome bundle and just bought the game, though. I suppose my chances of getting it upgraded at the lower price by contacting support are pretty low, huh?

So if I upgrade the 1000, do I lose anything? I seem to recall that certain hardware/firmware functions that the old OS offered and that emulators used were removed in firmware 3.X. Is that true?

Looking at picking up another PSP, possibly the 3000, but I'm also looking at the Vita.

Two quick queries:
Are there any issues with CFW on the 3k, or is it as simple as it looks?

Can the Vita run CFW in any manner? Specifically, I want to mod FFT and TO, issues with those two games would be a deal breaker if I can't hack them on the Vita - I'd love to play them on that beautiful screen, but gotta have that slowdown patch fix!

None. Easiest thing to do, upgrade to 6.60 and apply/run the cfw and back to stock if you want to.

Kinda tricky if you didn't able to download the games that has exploits, it's a cat and mouse game with VHBL.

Haven't kept up with this in a long time. What's the most up-to-date and compatible snes emulator for use with the psp?

I'm backing up my UMDs using my PSP2000 to play on my PSPGo (both on 6.60 FW) but I wonder if there is a limit to the amount of files I can drop into the ISO folder as there are some games that don't show up, either in ISO or CSO formats. Anyone can help?

As per Fatty's awesome guide, follow Wololo's guide: PSP Custom Firmware for dummies

It shouldn't hurt your PSP at all.

I think that 32GB is the max capacity that the PSP can have and yeah, the 2X Mini-SD adapter is king.

Yep, my 2000 is upgraded and I just gave Sony $40 for my trouble. The question is, would I lose anything from a homebrew perspective by upgrading my OG 1000? I thought they stripped some stuff out of the system API. But on the other hand, probably no developers have thought about 1000 compatibility for years.

I don't think there is a folder limit, but are you putting homebrew in that folder instead of just your rips?

I really dunno, unless you have 16 gig memorystick (is those even real? highest I know of is 4-8 gigs?) you're going to be generally filling the memory stick up with anywhere of 2-6 games from 300meg-1/2gigs easily.

CFW allows 128GB+ now (2x 64GB microSDXC in an adapter).

Could you link to a proper adapter and class 10 memory card(s)? These abbreviations are confusing as shit, so I have no idea if I'm looking at the right stuff online.

Pretty much the best place to get the adapter is Deal Extreme. Pick a color. (Edit: The part that says 16GB max is a lie, just ignore it.)

http://dx.com/p/dual-microsd-tf-to-ms-pro-duo-adapter-16gb-max-28826

If you have never used microSD with your computer before, then do yourself a favor and pick up two or three of these USB adapters, also from Deal Extreme. They're the most reliable ones I've found, but they can still fail, and it's useful to leave them next to various computers, so get two or three.

http://dx.com/p/aluminum-shell-micro-sd-tf-card-reader-max-16gb-30087

Newegg is a pretty good place for Americans to get flash memory.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...00082443 600006209&IsNodeId=1&name=Micro SDHC

This link should take you to their selection of Class 10 microSDHC cards.

I would suggest that you want one single 32GB card instead of two 16GB cards. The Deal Extreme adapter can combine two cards, and 32GB is the normal max for PSP, but one single card is cheaper and better and potentially more useful to you in the future if you someday decide to move it to a smartphone or something.

Pick a good brand. A cheap brand won't meet or exceed it's speed claims, and may die much too quickly due to inherent cheapness. AFAIK, Patriot is good, but if you don't want to mess around, Sandisk is the best.

If you want to check your local Best Buy or whatever for the flash memory, here's a list of the things you're looking for.

-microSDHC (this is the type, very important)
-Class 10 (this is the speed, kind of important)
-32GB (this is the size, matter of opinion)
-good brand

The snes emulator on PSP kinda sucks unfortunately. :(

I never had any problems with Snes9x. Probably not the fastest emulator around but no crashes or bugs. There's a new euphoria beta but I still use the three years old version.

My CFW is still 5.00 M33-6, works fine for me.

Appreciate it Cheeri, very helpful!

Keep in mind that Deal Extreme takes usually about a month - often times more - to get the product shipped to you. (I'm from the US)

Wow. I was just looking around Google and found out that you can get up to 128GB with a Photofast adapter. I always thought those things maxed out at 32GB. I may buy a couple 32GB cards whenever there's a good sale.

I ordered the eTech adapter bundle.

Does the 128 GB stick just work? That would be... pretty crazy. I could put my entire (large) UMD collection on and have room to spare for PSN stuff.

Apparently you have to format the stick with your computer first before the PSP will recognize it.

Looking to get a PSP 3000, is it possible to downgrade the firmware? Or don't you need to to apply CFW?

Sorry for the nub question.

Any good suggestion for a PSP Snes emulator? I mean, which one is the best one, admitting that there is one that has good enough performance?

Also, there is any working N64 emu out there?

I just got a component cable for my PSPgo and with the DualShot 3 compatibility that mini beast is becoming the best way to play all my old games without hassles.

Does the 2000 and 3000 have some sort of Tv sync to allow gaming on Tv? Also it seems only the GO allows some method of connecting a dual shock controller?

Do people recommend getting official Sony memory cards or the type below:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Photofast...AsAccessories_MemoryCards&hash=item3f19d11357

When I had a PSP for a short while before (returned as the item wasn't as described) I had one of these cards with it but my laptop didn't like it at all for some reason. Failing to pick up it was connected. Maybe it was just the laptop.

They work mostly on the PSP only. You have to format them (with the two sd sticks) on a PSP for them to work properly.

I most certainly recommend a photophast and a couple of big SD Cards. If you need to transfer anything to it, just do it through the PSP itself. It's slow, but works.

Thank you

Also for what regards the dual shock compatibility, only the go support it but in order to make it work you need to have PS3 or use an ad hoc PC program to pair console and controller. Once is done the controller works perfectly (you can resynch it to PS3 when you want but in that case you lose the pairing).

With a component, a dual shock and go you can use the psp as a mobile and home console, as you wish ;D

Ahh, that will be why they were so poor for me then. Shall order one now.

Just wanted to say thanks again for the help here - I have a brand new shiny PSP 3000 with a 32 gb sdhc in a duo adapter, works perfectly.

Modding it took like 10 seconds, and transferring all of my save files and games over from the old 2k worked fine.

I think I may need to pay a visit to ebay or gamestop soon to grab a ton of UMDs, I got into PSP gaming with the 2k pretty late, so there are a loooooot of titles I need to check out.

I did some poking around online - apparently the PSP Go has better video output quality than the other PSPs? Does the Vita have better output as well? It's funny how bad it looks output to my hd tv, even accounting for the resolution difference.

Also is it possible to use a dualshock 3 on the PSP3k without remotejoylite? I know the Go has native dualshock support, but I found a couple of people online saying it is possible to directly hook one up somehow (homebrew app, or just a mini usb male to male connector?)

And now back to vegetating on Tactics Ogre :V

Kind of a general question, but has anyone noticed a drastic difference in sound based on the PSP game? Unchained Blades and Corpse Party have extremely loud, crisp audio, but Eternal Punishment is barely audible at all unless you have headphones on or no outside sound whatsoever.

I think it just depends on whether the developer wanted to design audio that sounds "awesome" through headphones, or audio that "can be heard" through tiny speakers. Both are valid choices, but they're kind of at odds with each other.

Of course, great audio can probably do both at the same time, while fail audio can do neither.

Gonna grab a psp3000, wanted to know (hopefully yhis thread's good fit for my questions):

Does the Neo-Geo emu (not NeoGeo Station titles from the PSN store) runs games at full speed with sound? Even for titles like Metal Slug 3, Garou or Last Blade 2?
Any other emu?
Can I run my (bought on PS3) PSN JPN PS1 games like Dodonpachi on it?

How's the screen for fast paced 2d games (ghosting and such)?
Do I need Sony's expensive memory stick or can I use SD cards and such?

Random stupid question. I'm on 5.50 Prome-4, don't remember when I installed it on my 2000 (silver). I just bought FFVIII last week, didn't intend to play on this PSP but I just tried to copy and it said "The connected system is activated with a different accounting....." Is there a way to bypass this? I'm using my CFW to play my ripped UMDs to lessen loading but I'm pretty sure this is happening due to the CFW. I have no account on this PSP, and wifi doesn't work anyways.

If I rip my original PSX one, would the save be compatible? I don't plan to play FF right now but I'm just curious if there's a fix.

I'm not sure if the Neo-Geo emu runs the games at full speed, but the emulator recently got an update form a new coder this month.

also there is no need to buy Sony's memory sticks just get this Dual MicroSD-PRO DUO Adapter and some micro sd cards. I think the max it supports is 32GB

My PSP 2001's umd drive is randomly thinking it's open, making it virtually impossible to play anything off disc. Thank goodness for custom firmware.

What's the best PS1 emulator for PSP? I don't feel like re-buying my games on PSN and I think you need a PS3 for that. Also, They don't have some of my games so I'd rather turn them into ISOS.

The one of the latest firmware. It runs everything official as well as all your ripped ISOs. Some games do require hex-editing to work tho. You don't need a PS3 to buy PSX games and import them on your PSP. You can download them off your PSP just fine, albeit it's a bit longer.

Ah, thanks. I found this program called Popstation or whatever, it converts your PS1 ISOS into something the PSP can play. I tried it and it converted my Crash Bandicoot 1 ISO.

That's the way to go, indeed.

Crash Bandicoot doesn't have compatibility issues. All you have to do is placing the ISO's folder into the GAME folder of your memory stick.

Honestly, I would just upgrade your PSP to 6.60, 5.50 Pro Me-4 is horribly outdated (if you have a Pandora capable 2000, you can make the CFW permanent, if you don't, it's only temporary).

As for your PSX question, the save will be compatible if the Game ID is the same.
