VGLeaks: First look as Durango XDK (always connected, kinect required, must install)

this is every bit as nuts as the wink wink nudge nudge everybody is blasting about specs and such.

you do know pretty much 500 million laptops in circulation, basically all of them, have a built in camera in them right?

Yeah, but you can uninstall the driver and disable the device and your laptop still works. You can't do that on a console.

...ok so what is the point in even mentioning that? All consoles do that now, it's nothing special.

the ability to automatically download and push updates, software, whatever is a new feature of the console. This document is intended for developers... Who kind of need to know these things. That's why its mentioned.

Yes,i'm asking, how that means require online?
i dont see anything there saying it requires it though.
Because:

Xbox:
It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.
-Confirmed by doc
Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform.
-Not yet confirmed depending on your definition of 'always' and your ability to understand insinuation.
As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided
-Confirmed by doc

PS4:
same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons.
-Confirmed
A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online.
-Confirmed
continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source)
-Confirmed
Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around
-Confirmed
Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.
-Confirmed

If the retail console is actually like what is described in the OP, I really don't want one. And I'm a 360 owner since Blue Dragon released.

Always online requirement is an awful concept. Last week we saw how stupid it is with a game like Sim City where the failure is on the server part. Just imagine the things on your side that could go wrong (internet being down, wireless router failure, not being able to play after moving in a new home and so on) or an XBL failure on the scale of the PSN blackout.

The disc install coupled with the above is basically an anti used game gimmick. At that point you are probably better with a gaming PC.

I don't care one bit for Kinect and the PSeye so don't push these down my throat, please.

Imagine if you wanted to play Minecraft by yourself, maybe because your internet line is down and you can't play COD of Battlefield. But the XBOX won't let you because it requires an internet connection. Surely this is not the case right?

It's not the case. Not as far as any "legitimate" info has shown so far.

Do you guys think they will let you install the games and then not need the disc for authentication. That would be really great to just jump game to game since they are all on the HDD without needing the discs.

Granted, that would lead to problems with disc sharing, but if the xbox is meant to be so online oriented, couldn't they verify the game install through online authentication?

The always on sounds more like Always "turn" on,not Always on"line"

To me it means always on in low power state ready for instant on. The always connected part is about keeping the system up to date....IF an internet connection is available of course. Exactly like the PS4.

Also just a reminder about the "Always on, Always Connected Design philosophy" is the leaked ability for Durango to connect to and sync with mobile devices within range while in standby mode.

You totally missed the entire point.
Always connected doesn't mean it must be online to operate.

Nowhere in the OP does it state online will be required to play games. People have fun with the fact that MS has not refuted it, due to the small detail that they have not acknowledged even having a next gen console yet

Well I guess we will find out what the definition of always connected is.

I've posted this twice before, but always-on isn't DRM-related AFAIK, just for background/sleep state downloading. Games will still run if you lose a connection, I believe. This document seems to corroborate a bunch of other stuff I heard.

Plans could've changed in the eight weeks since I've heard this though.

Yes, if they are going to allow quick game switching, the disc will not be needed. A game will be purchased via retail and then associated with an account. It is possible that the game would be available for resale via a used game code purchased for that game or something.

I wonder what the numbers are on folks who've bought a 360 and not taken it online. Same for the PS3. I know online is in everything now, but... I wonder why there's no concern for customers who don't want to go online.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I haven't read through the whole thread. But am I the only one who thinks that screenshot is completely fake? Not to say the information is necessarily incorrect, but the way that help topic is written just seems....un-Microsoft.

It just seems to be written in such an informal way.

"Hardware accelerators, including "move engines" will be added to the console." Why would they feel the need to parenthesise move engines as if it's some foreign concept to devs?

"New depth sensor technology to provide better screen resolution and less noisy depth data". "Less noisy" doesn't exactly sound like the technical term MS would use.

Other words also arouse suspicion, "noncore". Is that even a real word?

Then right near the bottom, a link to "Durango Specs". I'd imagine an official MS document would say "Durango Specifications".

I don't know, maybe I'm just reading way too much into it, but compared to other pieces of MSDN documentation, it definitely seems below their usual formal standards.

do we know if you can't play games yet if your net goes down or if XBL goes down? I admit if it's like you suggest that would blow ass but if it isn't then I don't see the big deal, they'd be nuts to not allow offline play I can't picture them being that stupid.

There is a previous rumor that says it has to be online always to function at all. I don't know if it is true or not. It would suck if it is true.

Sony doesn't even need to try next gen. All they need to do is NOT do something utterly batshit insane and they've got it. Allow used games, don't force always online DRM, boom, Sony wins. Let Nintendo and Microsoft fight over who's got the better cutesy waggle game.

Reading the OP it seems like there's nothing that says used games aren't allowed and that there's nothing that says there is online DRM.

What am I missing?

Hopefully Always Online Always Connected is not DRM-related but I think many people are prematurely assuming it is DRM-related. As soon as I read that I automatically assumed something like "Oh, neat, the console will always be on, and it will take just a few seconds to launch apps and games no matter when I decide to use the console."

Always online?
Ehhh, not really like but not a deal breaker.

Games required to be installed?
Sweet, I install all mine anyway.

Kinect required to be plugged in?
FUCK OFF!

MS really wants me to be PS4 only this gen.

Pretty much how I feel. Trash Kinect and that money should've been used to have superior specs.

I was thinking the same.

This could work.

An online pass for used games to be re used.

So Microsoft sees the used disc is FIFA 14. Prompts the buyer to buy a $5 used game pass, gives half that money to EA.

EA would be all over that shit.

Forced installs is ludicrous, especially if the console really is using blu-ray tech. A 1 TB HDD would probably hold 25-30 games full games; this is excluding HD movies, HD TV series, DLC, Patches, and Downloadable Games. How are they going to make a user-friendly transfer system between consoles, especially for the basic consumers?

I doubt most general consumers are gonna go out and buy a larger HDD after theirs fills up, ultimately putting them on a spending freeze for the console. They better put a huge HDD on the box at launch or this will bite them sooner rather than later.

You're assuming a lot of things, text in the image don't said anything about online required and DRM.
I'm assuming two things.

That the EDGE information (which has been incredibly accurate up to this point) is legit, and that the points in this document that seem to corroborate that information do.
