BioShock Infinite PC Performance Thread

Yeah alternate just looks better. Sadly it is also the single most graphically intensive option. It is like a guaranteed 30-40% hit on performance.

It takes me from a mostly steady 60 to a steady 45 (which I am not a fan of), with dips down to the 20s.

Asking for a friend who wants to know where to get this SMAA injector and how to install it. Also wants to know if there is anyway to turn off the bloom. Said there is no bloom setting in the options. Without seeing the graphics options myself I wouldnt have any idea which setting it is or even if there is one.

Same, which is rather annoying lol.

If he just wants SMAA, he can use mrhaandi's injector. Installation is as easy as dropping the files within the d3d10 folder into steamapps\common\BioShock Infinite\Binaries\Win32, after which SMAA can be enabled/disabled on the fly using the Pause/Break key. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to disable bloom.

Anyone know if you can turn down the bloom and mist with Post processing turned to Normal? It's just too hazy and bloomy for me.

If anyone can figure out how to get custom keybindings working, UE3 has a command that disables all postprocess effects, as well as a command to disable bloom and lens flares.

ive been trying to set it up but nothings sticking.

People really prefer alternate? It just blurs the beautiful scenery.

Look at the posts just a few above yours with a comparison. The normal setting is the standard UE3 vaseline dof blur, the alternate is nicely accurate and subtle, and you can actually make out things in the distance rather than just look at a fog of splotchy color.

@ Me_Marcadet

I have the same and other issues in that area. It's where I stopped playing because I'm waiting for a patch or something from Irrational in regards to the stuttering when loading into areas. Tried the things on the front page, doesn't seem to get rid of it, just makes it slightly better.

Other than that, the game run smooth as butter with everything maxed out (at least, so far) on a 670 oc'd, i5-750 @ 4.1ghz and 8GB's of RAM.

"Glad" to hear that. I was worried about my oc'd 5850. I've got exactly the same issues and your build is way ahead of mine ( 5850 ocd @ 900/1200, e8400 @ 3.6ghz and 4GB of ram)

I haven't even gotten that far because I'm looking for ways to alleviate the chug generated before entering a large area (I guess to load textures or bake shadows or something, I dunno).

It even happens when I run at 720p, so I dunno what to do :/

Anyone else notice that only one core of their multi-core CPU is getting worked? I don't think cores 1 through 3 go above 10% during the whole game, but core 0 is at least 90%, occasionally hitting 100% when these chugs happen.

For those having constant freezing/crashing problems:

Download NvidiaInspector and raise the voltage by around .025 volts, or two notches. The voltage on my card was at 0.987 and I raised it two notches to 1.025. The game was crashing every 10-40 minutes for me but after doing this, I just played for three straight hours with zero issues.

I'm having this annoying pausing issue that happens constantly when I'm playing the game. I'll turn corners or enter new areas and there will be a short, minor pause where everything freezes.

I'm running the preset Medium but I can modify all sorts of settings, cranking them up higher or lower and it seems to make no real difference.

I believe I'm well within the minimum specs...

Intel Core2Duo 3Ghz
4 GB Ram
Radeon 6850
Windows 7

Take a look at the OP, the first part has tips to mitigate stuttering. (Sorry to be a "read the first post" reply, but its all there. :)

The suggestions from the OP (and other replies concerning stuttering) have helped me immensely, with both stuttering and general framerate.

That's the same problem I'm having. I'm just hoping for some kind of fix, because none of the fixes work. Best I can tell, it's probably an issue because of how the game puts a massive load on once CPU core but essentially none on any others, causing interrupt problems (I think).
I haven't tried playing with only two cores so that may make a difference, but I disabled core 0 and it just shifted everything to core 1 :/

Nine out of ten orphans can't tell the difference.
Does the game have motion blur? I ask because if it has and it hides the 'stutter' of 30fps I might as well lock it at 30.

It seems to, yes. I can't recall whether I had some kind of post-processing (in-game) that enabled that, though. Would love to turn it off if I could.

Try setting bloom and highqualitybloom to FALSE in XEngine.

EDIT

I still get shadow pop in sometimes. Even worse, Elizabeth, most of the time, doesn't case a shadow either :/

Dear God... Alternate post processing murders the clarity of the picture wtf...

You looking at the right picture?? The one at the bottom of that post looks much clearer.

Uhm yes? The first one has overblown bloom but looks otherwise 'sharp' whereas the other one ( with albeit better DoF effect ) looks much more smudgy.

Can anyone explain to a n00b how to get SweetFX working?
first download this and put it anywhere you want
http://sweetfx.thelazy.net/?p=91/
then download this and put it in the same folder as the game exe...C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BioShock Infinite\Binaries\Win32 then open the configurator and go to add new game and go to the same location as the sweetfx... and click the Bioshock Infinite exe and then start changing stuff... remember to click the save new config button before xing out of the configurator

For some reason I can't downsample this game. Trying 3200x1800 and the screen just zooms way the heck in. Any ideas why?

Edit: Silly-ass me. Had the 'Display Mode' in windowed mode instead of full screen...

MUCH better.

EWW. This FXAA has been terrible. Makes the game a blurry mess, and I can STILL see those horrible jaggies. Example:

Maybe I'm just old and my eyesight is going, but I truthfully can't see a difference between these 2 shots. Is one FXAA and the other not?

I also don't see any jaggies in either.

Try a lower resolution. 3200x1800 is a little hit or miss for me. 2720x1530 has been working fine for me in most games.

first one is SMAA. Second is FXAA. Second shot has noticeably more jaggies around face, fingers, etc.

Not massively different tbh. And not a particularly fair comparison, as you can't see her fingers properly in the SMAA shot, and she's nearer the camera so her outline is made of many more pixels than the FXAA shot.

It's a matter of personal choice. Personally I'd argue that the alternate effect looks more like DoF (albeit with the viewer focusing on the gun), whereas the normal one looks like Booker has some kind of eye defect.

Last nights patch had absolutely nuked my performance, been enjoying it so far, its so bad I'll have to wait for another patch to give my frames back.

PC gaming fucking sucks sometimes, as does Steams auto-patch shit.

when did it hit I played late last night didn't see now patch?

I love the alternate PP option. It's soft, and fits the overall style fantastically. If next-gen just brought games that looked only as good as this one with all the effects maxed, but with all the benefits of more power like no loading at all, larger enemy waves, building destruction, etc, I'd be a happy camper.

I had no patch either but a friend and I got our graphic settings set to default.

We had to set all the graphic options back, and the PoolSize was back to 400 too.

Same performances as before once the PoolSize set to 1200 (I still had the command line set in Steam).

Goddamn this shuttering is just garbage....at the part
Comstock House and all through out the city
shutters like a mofo... :( I've used everything but the one that Ken said to use.. do I have to reset my poolsize to default if using it... the bInitializeShadersOnDemand one I'm sure I fixed it for the most part but it seems to get worse the later in the game you get... fucking ridiculous. Makes you no even want to play. :( I'm using 760 poolsize now with the steam launch command..

Also had an awesome glitch I asked Liz to open a safe and it broke her AI... had to reset but thankfully it check-pointed only about 5 minutes earlier...this is serious one of the worst save systems in a game... shame because this game is soo good but this PC port is just not what I was expecting from IR Games. Really hope a patch comes and actually fixes this shit and not make it worse.

Yep that stutter is really making me sad because the game is awesome but that stutter...it even does it at 720p...I am tempted to rent the 360 version just to see how it plays..if there is no stutter,I will probably enjoy it more then 1080p graphics on Ultra but with that annoying stutter...I just reached Shanty town...by the way, when a few guys mentionned Shanty town before in this thread,I was making sarcastic remarks thinking they where posting in the wrong thread lol(Tomb Raider also has a Shantytown).

BioShock Infinite may not have the highest resolution textures, or the best models, or GPU-accelerated hair, but it looks "better" than almost every game this generation, especially when you crank up the res to 4K.

Can't wait for the inevitable sequel that will surely have all that technical whizz-bang included.

It is strange, isn't it? I was just saying in some other thread about how the game looks so awesome artistically even if it isn't the most technically impressive game. I really, really like the look of it. I just wish I had a better PC so I could max it out and get my 60 frames.

Speaking of, anyone with a HD6670 might find this link interesting:
http://www.game-debate.com/news/?news=4375&title=Bioshock%20Infinite%20Benchmarks%20AMD%20Radeon%20HD%206670

It essentially confirms that the crappy card does a crappy job of running the game but it gives a good idea of what tradeoffs to make.

I mentioned a few days ago how badly Elizabeth needs TressFX. It was a game changer for Tomb Raider, especially after a few patches.

I have the same GPU and the same settings except I am using in game v-sync and not forcing it through RadeonPro. I am also using borderless windowed mode instead of fullscreen. I get infrequent stuttering when it's probably streaming in new data, but it doesn't happen often enough for me to complain about it. A solid 60fps 90% of the time. Are you saying that once it hits 30fps it stays there? Because I had the same problem with Far Cry 3 until I switched to borderless windowed mode there. Also try changing "flip queue size" in RadeonPro to 1, this fixed stuttering in The Witcher 2 for me and I'm pretty sure I have it set to that for Infinite, too.

I would say the opposite, actually, as it would stand out like a sore thumb against the rest of the game, which has its own unique, otherworldly aesthetic.

Trust me, I thought about that, too. That was definitely obvious in every single cutscene of Tomb Raider that involved her posse, but I still felt like the game was more enjoyable playing through with the nice hair.

My final conclusion was that Bioshock would still benefit from the feature, despite your factually correct statement.
And, as always, it would be an option. Normal hair would be selectable, too. :)

You're just biased ;)
