He was in a terrible car wreck between the filming of Star Wars and its release. His face was literally ruined. It was reconstructed. His nose is plastic instead of cartilage.
True, he doesn't look all that bad. I bet he'd look a lot better if not for the accident though.

His face was a lot better after surgery, but it was most certainly mangled after the crash. Had to be reconstructed.
