New trailer for Beyond: Two Souls - PS3's swan song?

PS3 swan song will be Persona 5.

This looks amazing though. I like Heavy Rain for what it is, even though the "controls"
hours of QTE
annoy me.

Any chance they'll iron out the tearing between now and the time the game goes gold? (October release, so they'll probably be optimizing over the summer?)

I wasn't really looking forward to this game, but now, I must play it! The point where she's taking off on a horse was the point where I was being blown away, and the hits kept on coming. Kinda wish I didn't see that stuff but whatever, let's go. It looks like Indigo Prophecy 2, I loved Indigo Prophecy.

I never got the chance to play Indigo Prophecy, but how similar was it to Heavy Rain.

Wow that looked really laughable, where was the gameplay? Why didn't they made a CGI movie out of this instead?

The hate is strong in this one.

Not every trailer has gameplay, you know. Do you complain about every single trailer that doesn't show the actual game?

I never got the chance to play Indigo Prophecy, but how similar was it to Heavy Rain.

There were more stupid memory-based minigames, but kind of the same atmosphere.

Except for the second half of the story which is infamous for taking an incredibly stupid turn. And then another. And another.

So good:

Did you have a problem with tearing in Heavy Rain? It looks exactly as bad as in that game. Probably similar part of the engine at work here.
They will likely optimize the framerate drastically till release, which should reduce the tearing a bit. For some reason they don't use vsync, maybe too bad of a hit to the framerate.

But honestly the tearing in Heavy Rain never really bothered me, so I should survive this as well.

I don't recall any tearing in Heavy Rain...?

Btw, watching the Tribeca footage, and the acting and writing is decent. :D

I do. Seeing a trailer for a videogame without seeing how the game plays is fucking useless to me because all you're left with is a trailer about the plot and videogame stories are usually terrible. Going by Heavy Rain, I don't have a lot of hopes for the story, so all I'm left with is whether or not it's a good game while hoping the story is passable-- and if the trailer doesn't show me that either, I'm left with a bunch of visually impressive shots and nothing more.

People are crazy. One journalist seriously complained after watching the demo that one guy used the word "reckon", since no one apparently talks like that in real life and it took him out of the entire experience somehow. In the same sentence he raved about ND's amazing dialogue in TLOU, but in the freaking story trailer for that game there is also a guy that uses the same fucking word. But somehow it is worse in a David Cage game.

He will never be able to please these people apparently.
As someone who has been critical of Cage's writing (you've read a couple of my posts, i reckon :p) i think this is, so far, more solid on that front.
Still a few unnatural lines in the video linked above, that i rolled my eyes at ("ain't we all? Ain't we all?") but whatever.

One thing i still don't like is the use of music in a very manipulative way, when she tries to jump off and Aidan stops her, she starts crying, and here comes the sappy generic orchestral music to make things redundant..

Acting is great, though.

Anyway, i've only watched a few seconds, and don't want to watch more, since i already know i'll get it day one.

EDIT: The tearing annoys me, it's my Kryptonite, but i'll have to live with it, in this case. :\

Well, there's been quite a few gameplay trailers, this one only shows the story. I don't see how that's wrong. It's not like they're keeping the gameplay a secret.

EDIT:
35 minutes of gameplay right here

See?

Wow, what a totally original thing to say.

I don't care if it's original, since that's my opinion, but why focus on the cliche storyline of an outcast troubled with super powers when it looks so bad in the in-engine cutscenes? They should have shown some gameplay as well.

Edit: Watching the "gameplay" above, I see why they decided to not show it.

I was casually hyped, but now I'm "Must preorder" hyped!

I feel like I spoiled too much though. Media blackout time.

Sony has really fleshed out some devs this gen:

Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Sucker Punch

They have really climbed that ladder of recognition. Wonder how much of a *commercial* success this can be. With names like Page, I expect advertising to happen in pretty smart places (movie theaters?)

Do wonder if we will see a PS4 version. Sounds like QD knows how to turn profits for Sony

There was a lot of action going on in Indigo Prophecy, you was always on the move, a lot of supernatural stuff was going on messing with your head. It was like a big rollercoaster ride. Heavy Rain was like a puzzle, all characters was trying to do stuff but reality based, and a bit calm. Imagine the car scene where you had to stay above a certain speed, but have crazy stuff like that happening a lot and throw in some strange ghosts and stuff to screw with your head.

How does that look bad? >_> And there is gameplay everywhere just look for it.

How does that apply to this trailer? I'm aware that the game has gameplay and all, but I do think it feels pretentious when I see "cinematic" trailers pretending to be all "movie like" but in the end they're actually badly written and performed, like Heavy Rain.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it -- I'm not a fan of it -- but that's not my call to make. But I don't think it's ridiculous for people to make comments like that. All of the Last of Us trailers without gameplay were the exact same deal.

I only just became even remotely interested in The Last of Us when I saw an awesome section of gameplay (finally!), but before then I wasn't interested too much while others were going by, well, not too much besides pretty graphics and the developer.

Complaining about a cinematic trailer which was debuted at Tribeca Film Festival is inane, and having over half an hour of gameplay release at the same time (which is pretty uncommon for any videogame) provides plenty insight into the gameplay at such an early stage - it's unashamedly trying to be 'movie like' for a reason.

OK, watching the Tribeca footage and it's eliciting some feels. Just watched the
birth
scene. Also, I really dig these hobos.

EDIT: OH FUCK THERE'S A
FIRE
!

Shit, Heavy Rain-style edge-of-my-seat all over again.

Alright. But some people like for videogames to be more videogame like and they like to see elements of it-- and the fact that they took it to a film festival only drives the point, or at least the perspective some of us have on it. Again, it's not my call to make, but it isn't shielded from criticism. For me, it's hard to be excited for a videogame that is story driven and trying desperately to be cinematic when the writer/director doesn't have anything impressive on his track record in that regard. However, like I said, this is where the gameplay usually comes in and at least promises to be fun, but there's not even that aspect.

So all you're left with is a game trying to be a movie from (IMO) an unproven storyteller. I'm not down on this game, I haven't played it and I don't know much about it, it could be fucking awesome for all I know, I'm just saying that cinematic trailers like these give me nothing to go on. If videogames in general had some kind of track record of being great narrative and cinematic experiences, that would be different.

I can say that I'm open minded about it, but I can understand why this trailer wouldn't excite everyone.

Everything you've said is completely fair and understandable, I just feel it's a bit redundant to ape on a purposely cinematic trailer for not providing gameplay when there's a lengthy gameplay video also released. I expect the launch trailer will mix both gameplay and cinematic to give a better idea of what's on offer but in this instance I'm totally okay with them pushing the story, it's not like we've seen much of it before now.
This particular trailer is probably designed for people who want a cinematic experience (including those who liked Heavy Rain - there's a lot of us ;p) hence the Tribeca debut.

Your opinion is an opinion. In mine Cage has already delivered some quality experiences. Not everything has to be homogeneous in the gaming world. Interactive stories like Walking Dead and Heavy Rain are the minority, believe it or not, and people like them. SHOCK. Cant stand the knee-jerk reaction of gamers when they criticize shit like this for not being a game. Look at the larger picture and like the fact different shit gets made. Dont worry the future will be call of duty all day every day but dont miss out on the variety while it lasts!

I am finding myself beyond amped (pun intended) as I watch the Tribeca footage. It's all coming back to me, how intense this style of game/non-game/cinematic experience can be. Right now they're
escaping the burning building
and I keep pausing the video because it's so intense and I really like these characters, lol.

This isn't really a comment towards you, but more towards the people you describe.

I just don't understand why these people don't just not buy and leave these games alone. Criticizing stuff is fun, I know. I've seen the Fuse box art. David Cage should never speak, I know. People seem honestly offended to the point that every thread derails into a QD/Cage/Holywood hate fest though. Games like BTS aren't dominating the market, nor will they ever. They appeal to a certain subset of gaming and maybe get a little "traditional entertainment" cred in the process. Do people pile on visual novel "games" that might have the extent of their "gameplay" as a dating minigame or something the same way? Because a lot more of those come out every year.

I hate Call of Duty and most first person shooters, but thanks for generalizing! :p

I do like the fact that different shit gets made. Like I said, I'm not down on this game until I play it and don't like it. The only point I was trying to make was that I understand why some people are turned off by cinematic trailers. Again, I haven't played it, so for all I know it could blow my mind and I'm glad they're working on it as hard as they seem to be. I have no disrespect for the product or its existence.

OK, I've watched the trailer and the Tribeca footage and the GameSpot gameplay analysis. Holy shit, what happened tonight. Loved HR, then thought the Beyond stuff they showed at last E3 was rubbish, and now here I am absolutely LOVING everything I'm seeing about Beyond (except the tearing, blech). Wow, just wow.

I quoted what I wanted to reply to. Everything else you said is fair and opinionated, I have no qualms with it and I keep trying to reiterate that I am not down on this product and I am interested in it. So there's not really much of an argument between us. My only argument was that I understand how cinematic trailers can bother some people and not get them excited about a game.

It's true that I didn't like Heavy Rain and thought it had terrible writing, and that makes it even harder for me to be excited, but this isn't Heavy Rain. However, Heavy Rain is the only thing I have to go on in regards to the quality I may or may not should expect from this game, and a cinematic trailer does nothing for me because of that. But that doesn't mean I'm not excited about the game, it just means that I don't care for cinematic trailers.
