TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

normal people who like Halo/Gears/Call of Duty/Madden and don't read gaming forums or blogs will probably never know or care about this.

Fixed that for you.

Most people don't read gaming forums or check video game blogs.

Doesn't make them "dudebros".

Who was it on this forum who had an "insider" claim that the 1st showing of games on next gen xbox, will look better than when the games actually release?

Even though the detail was missing, a downclock of the GPU would certainly fit...

thuway, but the claim was about a more powerful GPU in the alpha kits than in retail.

Bingo. Neogaf is having a meltdown over the news but normal dudebros who like Halo/Gears/Call of Duty/Madden and don't read gaming forums or blogs will probably never know or care about this.

Normal PS2 bros who were into Final Fantasy, MGS, Gran Turismo, Madden and all the others did not follow all the negative news about Sony in 2006 either, and look how it turned out, half of them did not even buy a PS3.

The absolute worst thing you can do in this industry is to assume the past will repeat itself, it did not for Nintendo (N64), it did not for Sony (PS3), it did not for Nintendo again (Wii U).

Every generation has the giant red RESET button pressed, and everyone starts from scratch.

the rumor that MS is buying publishers to just show Xbone version of their games at E3 is really a crafty move by MS, people will tend to associate games with the console and will buy accordingly

or perhaps just damage control

Sorry. Thinking of the wrong embedded memory. 768K is the shared CPU/GPU one.

Still is EDRAM and isn't on die, so is very different then ESRAM.
What are you talking about? There's no "768kB shared" anything anywhere in the system and the eDRAM is in fact on-die.

I'm just worried whether this will be bad news for PS4 owners as well if third party publishers are having to work with much inferior hardware.

No need to worry. With all the platforms now using the same general architecture they can use the PC as the main development platform and just make lower settings for the PS4 and XboxOne versions.

We've never had consoles and PCs all using the same architecture like this before and porting games will be easier than it ever has been.

Actually, I might be fine with this.

If developers take XBone as baseline for third party games, PS4 versions might get optimized towards higher framerates and higher resolutions. This would be the easy road compared to improved visuals and effects. And I'd favor the former over the latter. I don't like the feeling of games that are run on the borderline of framerate and resolution.

At the expense of scale ?

It's not just IQ that will suffer with XO as the baseline, 3rd parties will be limited in their ambitions due to the weaker hardware.

Holy shit. This is going to get messy.

Xbone will play very beautiful games filled with immersion thanks to Kinect 2. And gameplay>graphics. So even with the rumoured down clock there shouldn't be any issue for average gamer or 12-14 yr olds who would buy the console for CoD.

I've always said that 60fps = gameplay whores. So hopefully this means third parties can double up the performance of XB1 and 60fps becomes standard on PS4 ports. I realize Durante has kind of debunked this dream, but dreams don't have to be rooted in reality. Hence why they're called dreams.

Despite being an MS hater, this is not good at all. Who's stopping devs from making multiplats optimized for the XBone and porting them to the PS4 without any optimization? If they don't make use of that extra power, what's the point?

If its at all true, its a waste of money unless its beyond just not being shown/demoed on the show floor and extends to some type of real exclusivity window post release IMO.

Iwata: (laughs)

Going to be very interesting to see how this changes the gap in power between the PS4 and One and the gap in power between the One and the Wii U. E3 as a whole is going to be compelling viewing this year.

WiiU plays still in a different league.

But I'm looking forward to Digital Foundrys analysis of Battlefield 4 on PC, PS4 and Xbox One this November. Will be interesing to see of you will notice a difference between PS4 and Xbox One launch games.

CoD is huge, but it's not the "next big thing". This happens every generation. Previous huge franchises stay huge( for a time ), but they aren't the driver of hardware sales they once were. Whichever platform grabs the "next big thing" in gaming will be the one who succeeds first.

It does make sense that Microsoft was initially aiming for a 2014 launch. We know Microsoft doesn't support their older consoles into the next generation, so why reveal a new Fable remake for the 360, have a big surprise for E3, and plan to sell another ~25 million consoles?

A 'tar baby' is an interesting metaphor.

200px-Brer_Rabbit_and_the_Tar_Baby.jpg

In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a doll out of a lump of tar and dresses it with some clothes. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the tar "baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as the Tar-Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and in doing so becomes stuck. The more Br'er Rabbit punches and kicks the tar "baby" out of rage, the worse he gets stuck.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.

I am not so sure about this. At least, PS4 and XBone seem to be on par with regards to CPU power and size of memory (although PS4 has more memory dedicated to games, but XBone still has plenty). XBone might get inferior drawing distances but world size and AI should suffer that much.

I curious, how, at Microsoft, they rate neoGAF.
That must be the purest hate of all kinds :)
Damn, im so proud to be part of this community.

People just talking about FLOPs a la CUs, a downclock means triangle set-up rate will be lower, it's fillrate will be lower. Just what a piece of shit.

Mods, you can remove "rumor" from the title. ESRAM yields are "troubling", to put it lightly.

This is factual truth.

Btw, you won't hear tech talk at MS' conference. And the tech cannot change at this point. They're stuck with it.

MS rushed, they were caught off guard by Sony, due to a failure in leadership.

Well there ya go. The 8GB DDR5 may be the "caught off guard" part?

Better framerate, better resolution, better Image quality.

All above are very important but with 1TF i don't see many games pulling something amazing like Deep Down fire...

So let me get this straight: Xbox fans are now going with Microsoft has a good chance at dominating the gen with comparisons to the PS2 era. Excuse me while I poop my pants.

Microsoft is in NO situation whatsoever, not in any fucking reality atm, that would make this true. Right now they are looking to the world like a confused, large juggernaut losing touch with its home base. If you think all the sudden that Jak and Daxters and shit is gonna start popping out of the box to sell millions and we are suddenly going back to the economy of 2000 where people were MUCH less informed about everything then you are fucking crazy.

Shit ain't happening. Halo is in decline. So is Gears. And Forza don't have shit over GT6. Troubled times are ahead for this company in gaming unless they show a LOT of games that are interesting. I still haven't counted them out but it's damn close. That machine looks shittier by the day.

May be a stupid question, but if a constrained launch supply is the biggest problem that these poor yields will lead to, assuming that they don't downclock, is this really that terrible a thing for them? Couldn't they just as quickly spin a thin supply as artificially high demand as they sort it out, it's not exactly a new practice.

Low yields means higher productions costs per inch of wafer at the fab. Which potentially means they'll be selling the boxes at even higher losses to consumers. And if supply is constricted at launch 3rd parties will lose money on Xbone games.

I don't think Microsoft are in a good position to lose as much money this gen, not with the poor sales of both Windows 8 and PC's in general.

Horrible news. So to what extent does this mean the scope of 3rd party titles on ps4 will be held back by an underpowered xbone?
