Story question. The last Halo I really played was Halo 2 and I never actually finished it. Still have it but have gone back and forth if I should even bother. I just go pulled away by other games and stopped playing my 360 in general. I was thinking of picking up Halo 4 and if I liked it try the online (first time I'd ever be paying for Xbox Live).

Story wise how loss would I be going into Halo 4?

I did watch Forward Unto Dawn. Was that required before playing the game or helps you understand the story?

Is there a decent enough recap over the past games events?

Any game I should perhaps play in order to get use to the online play? The speed of the game? Aiming? Does the game have bots I could practice again or will I simply have a trial by fire experience?

Thanks.

As someone who's played them all, Halo 4 seems to work so anyone can get on board regardless whether the Bungie games were played or not. There's a pretty good cut-scene at the beginning of the game that gives an overview of what's happened, and the beginning of the game is supposed to be a little mysterious.

Play the campaign and Spartan Ops to get a feel for the aiming and, in the case of SpOps, unlocking and setting up your personalized loadouts. Halo 4 made a huge blunder by now making gameplay unlocks, but playing Spartan Ops will gain you the points you need to unlock the rifles and armor abilities.

I'm going to disagree with Squid. Especially since you haven't played much past Halo 2, you're going to be extremely lost in where the story is. Forward Unto Dawn has almost zero bearing on the story. I've played the hell out of the campaigns for all games, and I was confused out of my mind as to what was going on. Unless you really read the new novels and read up on the forerunner trilogy, it'll seem weird to you.

Gameplay wise, you should be good. There's a lower skill gap than Halo 2, and the newer updates have made the game a bit faster with the BR more deadly. You might have problems with flinch mechanic as opposed to descope.

And no, there isn't any recap of the past events. I don't want to spoil it, but the first mission can be considered somewhat of a recap because it picks up where Halo 3 left off, but ultimately the game doesn't explain well as to what's happened, who these enemies are, where you are, how you got there etc. But do one thing, there are terminals in the game. You can only view them if you unlock them. They do help with a bit of the new story, maybe watch on YouTube I guess? And maybe read up on IGN's recap of the Halo story leading up to Halo 4.

You just proved my earlier comment to be true. You DON'T need to play the other games to really know and understand the story of Halo 4. I've never read the newer books, and I never felt lost. I do absolutely agree on watching the Terminal stories first, because they give some meaning and depth to an otherwise dopey, one-note villain.

Just wanted to pop in and say they really put Regicide in BTB? ITS BTB SKIRMISH you put 2 flag in and neutral bomb. THAT'S IT. Maybe a territory type game like a KOTH. Regicide shouldn't even still be in the game, shoulda been removed 1 month in.

How many fucks can you possibly up?

PM me Frankie.

I'm so sick of this mishandling of Halo.

Team Regicide is actually fun but yea, it's Slayer.

I'll probably hop in the playlist today so see how things are. The options seem quite limited however.

Team Slayer is actually fun. Team Regicide is a novelty playlist that will always be remembered as Mario Kart AI Halo.

Well Team Slayer is competitive balanced and is fun where as Team Regicide is just for fun really. There's nothing wrong with it being just for fun. However, it's important that everyone understands that.

Well if you have one gametype that competitive and casuals can play, and you have another gametype where just casuals can play and it ignores the competitive side...which one do you put in your playlist?

You still talking about BTB Skirmish. I don't think any of those game types should be in there.

Yea I dunno they have BTB and BTB Skirmish now and both playlists have slayer modes but only skirmish has objective modes? I mean the skirmish name traditionally means Slayer/Objective mix. Then I ask why dont they just combine the two playlists, are there that many hardcore BTB Slayer fans who dont want to play objectives at all?

Team Regicide is great. BTB objective is generally more competitive so it doesn't belong in there. Its really that simple.

Put it in BTB Infinity Slayer. Thats where all the casuals are anyways

Well considering BTB Slayer is the most popular playlist in the game, I wouldn't change it that drastically. I'm okay with BTB Skirmish being just Objective but it needs more. I actually did a big write up on an idea I had for Objective playlists and gametypes. Basically I think the Objective playlists should be mainly CTF with a few of the other OBJ game types mixed in.

BTB Skirmish has CTF on three maps.

One of those maps is Complex.

Regicide defense force. Never thought I'd see the day, look what Halo 4 has done to you people.

I'm gonna stick around though and fight the good fight, I'll un brain wash you all and save Halo. I promise.

Most fun times.

Wait, do people seriously think that Regicide is competitive?

I thought it was unanimously known as a babby casual gametype.
Why label it competitive or casual. It's just too random of a gametype. Follows the same idea of VIP, except getting powerups out of the blue.

I can be attacking a King but then he'll magically get an overshield because of an assist or Distraction medal that raised his score. Since Halo 4 only has like four gametypes that aren't Slayer I'm not all that surprised they're throwing in Regicide to spice up that "variety".

Team Regicide should take cues from VIP and have the king have persistent overshields or damage boost instead of just giving them to him mid firefight. It might be worth playing, then, but right now I don't like it.

I don't know who thought giving someone overshield just for camping was a good idea but hey, they get payed to make those decisions

Its meant to be a wacky gametype. The problem is that its in non wacky playlists

Yes but the real problem is they dont realize this. Thats even scary. Its complete mishandling. I would be getting yelled at by my boss if I pulled something so obviously wrong.

They are applauding it over there.

Juices, you're being a white knight towards Bungie's halo and ultimately shitting on the grave of whatever semblance remains of a once competitive franchise.

Regicide belongs in Multi Team, though.

Speaking of multi team, I hope it gets bumped up to teams of 3 sometime in the future. It was perfect in Reach, because I was often in a party of 3.

LOL Fire this man

Halo 4 added a LOT more to Halo than Reach added to 3.

In conclusion Halo 4 killed Halo more. I'm not saying Reach is the best Halo. I'm saying its better than 4. 4 is really really really bad. From terrible marketing in the beginning, Ughh whats in each version? Oh yea they flip flopped a hundred times so nobody knows, people pissed off they bought the season map pack cause the "14 day buy n try" marketing gimmick LOL. Tournaments of failure and being dropped from MLG and the whole BTB maps fiasco, still no small maps really. Terrible playlist management continues with 4. Vehicles suck, Create your own loadouts suck, Perks suck, Flinch sucks, No doubles and Snipers in beginning of Halo 4, how have they not realized those need to be launch playlists? My buddy I visited last weekend was like why doesnt Halo 4 have doubles? I had to tell him it did, cause he stopped playing cause it didnt have doubles in the beginning. The UI, OH GOD THE UI. What is with that shit, such a failure from the Active Roster and UI Reach had. The fact there is literally no ranking system until 6 months or so in and its still invisible in-game! No motivation to play the game. Did I mention personal ordnance? Randomness everywhere. Theres a sniper that gives you a kill in this game if you get a BODY shot. Yea and the beam rifle has auto aim so you can snapshot incredibly easy, autoaim in a warthog means you can snapshot over and over. The MANTIS. Literally everything Halo 4 has done is broken in some aspect. All of the patches were broken at first.KEVIN FRANKLIN. The flag changes, Indicator on flag making it babby level casual gaming. Objective is 6v6? WTF? Multi-Team is what 8 teams of 2? Regicide Mario Kart level scoring! And just look at the population dropoffs. 92% dropoff. You literally now have the game at the bottom out level, Its probably not going to get much lower because just by chance yyou happen to have ~30K players hop on Halo at peak hours. They probably dont even really want to its just their default action in life. Halo Waypoint Stats site which is still way too fancy and slow compared to bungie.net stats! The fileshare not working for like 5 months or something crazy like that!

Please Reach is far from perfect but Halo 4 is bad, like real bad. Look at how no one plays it, because its NOT fun. Its NOT competitive. Its nothing really.
