Graphs like this are meaningless. This is what it looks like for all games. Also, Halo 3 came out during a different time. Call of Duty has eaten up the majority of the Xbox user base.

There's also the issue of reporting active users in the past hour vs current active users. I don't think Halo 3 told you that.

Halo will probably never be as dominant as it once was, but it's still a great series.

Halo 4 will always be better than Halo 3 because Halo 3 doesn't have jet packs.

Not meaningless at all. Previous Halos people would continue to play MP up to the release of the new Halo. Of course there would be the slow decline. That's inevitable for any game but the drop off in Halo 4 is pretty damning.

If only jetpacks was all it took to wow gamers...Tribes would be the #1 FPS.

Combining LE and regular sales, I get 5.5 million for Halo 2 in the US (not sure where the 6.6 is coming from, it didn't sell 1.1 million between end of 2007 and 2008--might have been a retroactive number adjustment or something?)

Maybe Halo 2 PC sold around 1m.

Just to confirm (because I like to know sales numbers), all other numbers are combined ?

Halo 3 had current unique player peaks of over 1 million.

It also had daily peaks 2 years after launch of something like 200,000 players.

The only game that took it down from #1 on the XBL charts for any extended time period was MW2 and it was still always right up the pointy end at #2 or #3 when another block buster had just launched.

Halo 4 is down to what, #7 with peaks barely topping 30,000? And that is with something like a 100% growth in Xbox 360 sales and a 400% increase in live users.

Even Reach had a significantly larger daily peak than Halo 4 topping around 100,000 every day until 2012.

Hope they don't use this as a reason to push the ordnance and perk system even further. I will buy it when it's in the bargain bin only for singleplayer and not at launch if that is the case.

Even singleplayer was far too linear and the AI was a big step back from the previous titles.

I'm not a fan of Halo 4. Like Halo 3 before it, the guns just don't feel right for me like they did in Halo 1/2. And Cortana was infinitely more annoying in 4 thanks to forced drama.

Halo 4 had the most emotional ending and an awesome (albeit underused) villain.

I have great faith that 343 will learn from their mistakes and the next title will be magnificent.

343 did what Bungie only scratched the surface with in Halo 3; They turned Master Chief into a human being not just a "Vessel for the player".

It's sad that Halo 4 died in term of MP... for me the MP was a step back in the franchise.

Halo 3 had 100k+ for multiple years, halo 4 is terrible and the numbers show. even nba 2k surpassed it.

Halo 4 got some big price cuts around launch so I'm not that surprised, though a bit disappointed that MS may get the message that most people like the way Halo 4 turned out and continue on its path. Though Halo 3 sold 10+ Million without massive price cuts and kept hundreds of thousands of players for a long time.

The fact that 2 0r 3 CoDs are beating Halo 4 out in UU's out to tell MS that this isn't the way to go, however. I mean 2 and 3 topped the charts forever and even Reach had more players in the same time frame as 4's.

The multiplayer would easily be the best FPS I've ever played if they changed a few things, as is it's a trainwreck. The feel of the game engine is simply amazing though.

The single player would be amazing too if they had found a more clever way for the player to defeat those forerunner enemies.

Basically, the ideas presented in the game are top notch, they fucked up the execution though. They can probably fix the issues in the next game easily, but the fixes are going to have to be clever.

Because it tried to be something it wasn't, apparently to the point of selling itself out to the COD crowd, but not in a way that was any good. That seems to be the general consensus I believe.

I however really enjoy the game. With all the new updates and stuff it plays quite solid and is a good GAME. Maybe not the best HALO game, but still a great game.

That Halo Reach counter isn't exactly a fair comparison as it's a 24h counter (i.e unique players over a 24h period). That said, as someone who played Reach nearly every day I can assure you peak populations were around 100,000 right into 2012.

It's really not that simple. It's not "CoD in space", it just adopted too many features of Call of Duty that don't belong in a Halo title. The problem is that the game is fighting between two personalities and can't decide which to adhere to.

Halo 4 however is very good graphically but good graphics do not automatically equal a good game.
 
I'm sure the next installments won't even get close to 5 million. Their sales will regress to half of what they are currently selling. 343 did too much harm to the franchise, and ignored the community for way too long.

Yeah. I simply don't think the studio is anything but simply ok. Grabbing a bunch of AAA talent and putting them together doesnt make a good game.

Well I think most people are just talking about the MP which is what has given the series its legs in the past. If you go on the bungie.net forums there are just as many hardcore fans of the games talking about how bad MP is.

This isn't a case of "THIS IS NEOGAF"

I remember all the crap Halo 3 got when it was released. The actual shooting and sensation of collision in Halo 4 is head and shoulders above Halo 3. The basic locomotion is better as well. I'm not talking graphics.

I don't get the complaints that are waged against Halo 4. It plays really well. Reach played really well too. Guess the pure simplicity of gameplay is taken as a unchangeable tenant by hardcore fans.

It's been explained by many HaloGAF members, so I'm not going to.

Here's some examples of the problems with Halo 4:

  • Instant Respawn
  • Sprint
  • Custom Loadouts
  • Armor Abilities
  • Perks
  • Specializations (one allows you to essentially remove flinch when scoped)
  • Personal Ordnance Drops
  • Global Ordnance Drops (which I believe 343 has removed for the most part)
  • Flinch
  • Mediocre Maps
  • Redundant Weapons
  • Frame Rate Dips
  • Poor skill-based matching
  • Lack of custom game options
  • Removal of legacy game modes (assault, juggernaut, 1 flag ctf, race, etc)
  • FileShare didn't work for months with no explanation
  • Shitty UI (jesus)

There's probably more, but that's just off the top of my head. The MAIN issue with Halo 4 is it's having an identity crisis. It's not sure whether it's supposed to be a generic 2012 FPS with custom classes, weapon skins, perks, and killstreaks. Or if it's supposed to be Halo 4, a medium paced arena shooter. This on top of 343's "it feels like Halo," and "trust us" pre-launch left a pretty bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

In conclusion Halo 4 killed Halo more. I'm not saying Reach is the best Halo. I'm saying its better than 4. 4 is really really really bad. From terrible marketing in the beginning, Ughh whats in each version? Oh yea they flip flopped a hundred times so nobody knows, people pissed off they bought the season map pack cause the "14 day buy n try" marketing gimmick LOL. Tournaments of failure and being dropped from MLG and the whole BTB maps fiasco, still no small maps really. Terrible playlist management continues with 4. Vehicles suck, Create your own loadouts suck, Perks suck, Flinch sucks, No doubles and Snipers in beginning of Halo 4, how have they not realized those need to be launch playlists? My buddy I visited last weekend was like why doesnt Halo 4 have doubles? I had to tell him it did, cause he stopped playing cause it didnt have doubles in the beginning. The UI, OH GOD THE UI. What is with that shit, such a failure from the Active Roster and UI Reach had. The fact there is literally no ranking system until 6 months or so in and its still invisible in-game! No motivation to play the game. Did I mention personal ordnance? Randomness everywhere. Theres a sniper that gives you a kill in this game if you get a BODY shot. Yea and the beam rifle has auto aim so you can snapshot incredibly easy, autoaim in a warthog means you can snapshot over and over. The MANTIS. Literally everything Halo 4 has done is broken in some aspect. All of the patches were broken at first.KEVIN FRANKLIN. The flag changes, Indicator on flag making it babby level casual gaming. Objective is 6v6? WTF? Multi-Team is what 8 teams of 2? Regicide Mario Kart level scoring! And just look at the population dropoffs. 92% dropoff. You literally now have the game at the bottom out level, Its probably not going to get much lower because just by chance yyou happen to have ~30K players hop on Halo at peak hours. They probably dont even really want to its just their default action in life. Halo Waypoint Stats site which is still way too fancy and slow compared to bungie.net stats! The fileshare not working for like 5 months or something crazy like that!

Please Reach is far from perfect but Halo 4 is bad, like real bad. Look at how no one plays it, because its NOT fun. Its NOT competitive. Its nothing really.

I loved Halo 4 campaign and adore the MP. Never understood the hate. Yeah it helps noobs with ordnances but so what?? Gives a chance to everyone to use a power weapons unlike other Halos. Thats fine with me.

Screw the haters. I am gettin an X1 just for Halo. 343i keep doin the hard work and congratulations!!
