It stores in the cloud but it starts in your HDD. Are you going to devote 720p worth of your upload bandwidth to record videos while you play? What happens when your connection has issues, does it automatically choke down your image quality to compensate?

The answer is no. It records locally and then gets uploaded to the cloud. It does not record in the cloud to start.

Well, yea. It has to be stored locally initially but does it save it post upload? Do you have to upload right away after making the clip or can it be stored locally for editing and upload later?

My cable is fine with upload/download. I regularly play games on my PC, while my son/wife watchs netflix.

That's great for you. What's your point? Why would they make their DVR dependent on how solid and fast your Internet connection is?

It will record locally and then upload to the cloud. Mark my words.

Stores in the HDD or caches in RAM? I would say it does the latter until it finds bandwidth "wiggle room".

Cached locally until you edit a clip and share it, whereupon its transferred to the cloud at that point so it has a home online for others to stream/download/view from.

Otherwise they're using alien technology.

It's important to note that while clips may be cached locally, that doesn't mean the app that plays them doesn't need a internet connection to work. Im sure IE caches pages just like the desktop version but without direct access to the consoles file system, you can't view those cached pages without a internet connection and gold sub.

So it chokes down your multiplayer experience by using a large chunk of your upload speed? Keep in mind that some people with cable Internet are still sitting at 1mbps on the UPLOAD speed even if they're at 30mbps on the down speed.

I just don't see how that's a good solution to saving and editing locally.

Well I'd imagine the editor runs locally, as what they showed on stage at e3 was somebody quickly scrubbing through the recent data and cutting out a small portion and then bookending it with themes. I'd imagine that it gets uploaded after you make those cuts as it'd be inefficient to store the entire recent history online before making edits.

I don't know exactly how it works, just explaining how common sense would inform how it could (and almost certainly does) work.

Well I'm saying it would wait until there's enough wiggle room to upload, maybe even in chunks. Trust me, I don't think that is an ideal solution, but I feel that that is more than likely what they'll do.

There's no benefit in keeping a near-real-time storage of continuous gameplay online. Thats data that will be almost entirely discarded. Why waste the bandwidth and storage?

The Gold requirement (and online) will be out of simplicity on their end, mixed with "just because", not out of need.

your the one who brought up bandwidth. I was responding to your question unless you wasn't asking and making a statement. The question mark might of fooled me.

Waiting until there is "wiggle room" sounds terrible and leaves a lot of opportunities for it to bite off too much bandwidth leading to a latency issue when you're trying to kill people.

Why can't videos be saved locally, edited, then you choose what gets uploaded? I mean isn't that the way people expected this feature to work?

Unless we are talking about streamed videos as you play, but we are talking about DVR which isn't streaming it to people live.

This is exactly how it will work, and plus it is being uploaded to twitch, not Microsoft service...

Of course, this is all due to used games drm not being accepted, if it was, it would have all been free under family sharing plan where you could share your gold with 10 people!!!

I agree its not an ideal situation. Hopefully it will be stored locally, but it just seems unlikely since I don't know how else they would explain it being an XBL Gold requirement, lol.

It's kind of my interpretation of what has been announced. I know in the grand scheme I'm not that important to this but if I'm seeing it that way, others will too.

It's pretty easy to see why it's a requirement if you're familiar with Microsoft's M.O.

What bothers me is game journalist are terrible, why haven't I seen one interview where MS PR answer the following question

Why are YouTube, Netflix, Internet Explorer and etc behind a paywall when every device such as smartphones, apple TV, PS3 and etc has them available for free?

Why is Gold $60 when PSN+ is $50 and offers discounts and Instant Game Collection and 10 min longer record time and what about Steam which is completely free?

Why isn't headset or rechargeable battery not included with the system when your competition offers these things?

So your saying TitanFall is exclusive, is that 100% and not timed. *MS PR spin only available on Xbox*, cool so in a years time if it comes on PS4 we will call you out is that cool trollface.gif

If they ask, all they're going to get are PR spin answers for all of them. "enhanced version on Xbox" or "a smooth experience you won't get anywhere else" (even if that's not the case) or "Gold provides much more value than the IGC because Cloud" etc.

Seriously who the F would buy this system without paying for xbox live gold. The same goes for PS4 without PS+. Both systems are crippled without subscriptions. Multiplayer is going to be a even bigger focus this gen than in previous generations. You'd be a fool to get either and not pay for their online services.

How can anyone even refute that?

I don't really get MS strategy?

All in one box, that really isn't all in one.
Already paid app behind another pay wall
Force kinect without showing any worthwhile game for it
Your head (Don)leaves at probably the most crucial point of the hardware launch
weaker hardware yet 25% more expensive than direct competition
Flipping policies left and right (DRM/self publish)

The boys in green got work cut out ahead of them

Does this preclude saving on to the local storage first and then providing players the option to upload content as they see fit? Otherwise, it will be a jumbled mess of unwanted stuff that consumes a ton of bandwidth.

He doesn't know the details he's just interpreting what the article said to him. It could work the way he thinks it works or entirely different.

It'll have to be local at first, but there is nothing out there that says you can save locally then come back to it. The fact that Game DVR is actually a Gold feature leads me to believe that once you edit your clip, it has to be uploaded. Maybe I'm reading too much into at this point.

Every other XBLG feature is an online feature. And of course it is - XBL is an online service. How would they explain an offline feature being locked to an online service?

Where do you think these replays/clips are being stored when you share them with friends? Most likely Microsoft's cloud services, an online feature. I don't see how that's hard to get.

Edit: Good chance Microsoft will allow you to upload to Youtube, etc. However, I believe they'll have the clips initially associated with your xbox live account and stored on their servers.

Cause if there's no good MP games on the horizon (which happens a plenty) I'd rather not be paying for something I'm not using.

I'll also be able to atleast watch Netflix and such (which I do a shitload on my PS3) during the downtime.

How can anyone not see where people are coming from?

You can predict all you want about MP being an even bigger focus this gen all you want...doesn't make it so.

We've already went over how a vary large percentage of 360 owners never even went online once. So...?

Most if not all f2p games won't require ps+, those include some BIG name games. Now as for X1, your gonna need gold for everything.

Try to use the Xbox Internet Explorer to configure your router.

I'll wait here.

Only read the first page but why would you need a subscription to use a Netflix subscription? On what device do you have to pay to use Youtube? This makes no sense at all.
I see you're new to the Xbox.

Not disputing any of those points but lets say they ask and all they get "we are not willing to discuss that at this time." What do you want them to do? Keep pushing and pushing until next time when the new halo releases IGN doesn't get a review copy?

No just leave it at that at least they asked and we can freely watch or read an interview of them spinning or dismissing questions. Better than not asking these questions at all at least these points get traction if major sites like Ign highlight these things.

Stop with this dishonest equivalency garbage.

And new features for those that typically game online and enjoy social integration does not mean the offline crowd will be left chewing on their controllers like village idiots. The paths were wide open last gen for online play to find a market share that reflected the user base, that is not going to change just because of some clever share features.

I can see where people are coming up with things to hold against xbox one but I think that anyone buying a $500 video game system and not paying to be able to play multiplayer games is a fool. Sorry, that's just how I feel. I'm gonna skip the F2P argument on PS4 as you'd still be restricted to just those games and unable to play games like call of duty, titan fall, etc.

So, discuss it with us then?

You've basically said "you've paid $500 bucks, what's more money?" Ever hear of single player games? A vast majority of people on GAF aren't all that big into MP games. A lot of people play just for the story and never touch MP. What exactly do you say to those people?

Do you have any other arguments besides the "what's more money"?

Ok I found the Whitten comment. It was from the IGN "AMA" when he said the Game DVR would record at 720p at 30fps.

IGN

Will the Game DVR capture at the source resolution? i.e. will Forza 5 clips capture at 1080p and 60fps? And where can Game DVR clips be uploaded to?

WHITTEN: Game DVR captures beautiful clips at 720p 30fps. The first thing you’ll see with our game DVR is the integration of our Upload service on the console. This service allows you to manage, edit, and share your content. Your clips are stored in the cloud. Also, you’ll see games making “magic moment” videos of your gameplay based on the game DVR functionality – all seamlessly integrated. You’ll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection, and when you are looking at gamercards on the system. You’ll also see games take advantage of this platform capability and do interesting things to integrate captured game footage into the game experience itself.

This is where I'm hung up. Sorry to still be on this.

Hmm - I do my mp gaming on my PC and get consoles for the single player exclusives. I didn't play a single game online this gen - not on my 360 nor on my PS3...
I'm not feeling like a fool to be perfectly honest, I probably should have gotten PS+ earlier though...
Next gen we'll see how it goes - but if PS+ doesn't offer comparable value ("free" games) on the PS4 as it does on PS3 it'll be canceled in no time...

Do we have a complete list of what's locked behind each paywall yet? I understand Sony confirmed media services and automatic updates won't be locked behind PS+.

Your subscription must have expired long ago. Party chat killed any interaction between strangers. You can play cod for hours and not hear anything.

i switched from Xbox 360 to PS3 lol like 3 years ago or so

Simple examples
We have a unused 360, which people play games occasionally, but it is mainly used for Netflix, soon as person had Gold expire Netflix was unusable now e system barely gets used.

Another gamer is not into online gaming, played local Multiplayer FIFA with his buddies here and their but mainly plays single player games. Would like to watch Netflix occasionally, use YouTube occasionally as well as she videos, well touch luck you need to pay for Gold.
