Jack Tretton: "[PS4] Production yields have been fantastic"

Physically walking up to a console to turn it on? What is this, the 90's? =p

I'm guessing it was to more clearly illustrate in the promo that he will be playing the PS4 game on the vita TV.

Interesting that he takes the DS4 from the PS4. So hopefully you can freely move the controller back and forth between PS4 and vita TV (one DS4 will cost almost as much as a vita TV - they're £55 in the Uk)

Doubt it...its Bluetooth...there still needs to be a pairing of sorts..otherwise you would probably lose the ability to use the controller to turn on the console...

You would hit the PS Home button and turn on all of the compatible devices within range

Supposedly you can change the colour of the LED, IIRC. DemonNite mentioned it somewhere, or at least hinted at it.

is completely black all the time an option? I really hate 'future blue' on anything, especially in a dark room when I'm trying to focus my eyeballs on the telly.

Something's exploding on the left. What could it be?

Nothing! I said nothing!
Sony have so nailed every single aspect of the PS4. MS stupidity even allowed them to get away relativity easily with introducing paid online play.

Anyone looking to launch a new console in the future is going to study what they have done with the PS4.

What exactly could M$ have said to challenge PS+?

Well, there is the possibility that PS4 cpu is alreday 1,8-2GHz and they don´t want to spill the bean until X1 is in the market so they can´t react.

We've already seen both PS4 and Xbox One units packed and ready to be shipped, they are in mass production now. Whatever specs both consoles have, they are set in stone and can't be changed anymore.

With Jack Tretton claiming "fantastic yields", overclocking the PS4 APU is certanly a posibility; and a very likely one IMO. The real question is: by how much?

At least enough to stay 50% ahead of the compentition IMO

I gotta be honest, I'm a little disappointed that we're all quoting that watermarked, low-framerate GIF, rather than this one:

...which I made just after the Vita TV announcement. Yes, I am super salty right now.

Clock speeds can be altered at any point..they would just need to slide it into a firmware update...assuming it wasn't done already before manufacture...

Only if every single chip you put into a console was validated for that speed. There's little sense in validating all your chips for 2Ghz but only shipping them at 1.75Ghz. You either raise the target clock, or save a lot of money by not throwing away all those chip that work at 1.75Ghz, but not 2Ghz. In either case you have to make the decision before you begin producing final retail product.

Can you up the brightness and contrast or the curve value of the GIF? And while we're at it, that room needs better lighting/to be better lit to be a showcase area. :p

How long does it usually take for someone to get their hands on a new console and rip it down to it's processors ?

PS3 fat had a motherboard [and other internal modules, cooling/PSU] that was described as "an work of art" by many. [but that was not hard, when PS3 mobo was compared to the shitty job that MS has done with X360. They used sub-par components and even soldering mixture that allowed HOT CHIPS TO POP OUT FROM MOBO.... but hey, MS saved 1 cent per console on that...]

Im sure PS4 will recieve great level of care.

It depends if there is little yield difference at a higher clock and it stays within the specified thermal envelope then its a possibility.

Its rare though and I don't think Sony feels the pressure to make last minute changes either.

We can but hope.... 2GHZ CPU or bust!

They did it with the PSP...MS is using a very similar architecture and has done it for both the CPU and GPU...we know that the GPU in retail form can be had at 1000mhz...

I would be SHOCKED if the 1.6ghz/800mhz numbers were not WELL within the safe limits the hardware...

Sony designers did a tremendous job with PS4. Even stand has ventilation shafts, perfectly aligned to the openings on the PS4's "deathstar canyon".

Never made a gif before but I gave it my best shot.

Awesome work. Presence of PS4 was short, but effective. :D

They did it with the PSP...

Dear god I've seen this example pop up so many times. PSP was downclocked for battery life reasons.

There is very little reason, if any, to keep a home console downclocked. If they tested the chips at 2Ghz after leaving the factory, they'll be set at 2Ghz. Why would you purposefully ship a console under the spec you manufactured at?

PSP chips were all validated to work at the higher clock and only limited in the first wave of software to preserve battery life. Home consoles don't have battery life as a concern and what I said before remains true: the decision has to be made ahead of time. You can't push an update to hardware if you haven't already tested every single system for that speed.

The fact remains...the PSP had its clock speed increased...as has the Xbone...

In regards to the PS4..I'm simply stating that I find it VERY HARD (impossible even) to believe that 1.6ghz/800mhz is the absolute limit of what is safe on the PS4's silicon...

We know for a fact that the jaguar cores can take more than 1.6ghz...and we know the GPU can take more than 800mhz...

I'm not arguing against that...however I don't buy for a second the PS4 couldn't handle an upclock similar to the Xbone

PS4 is downclocked so they can make a surprise attack against MS when ND game releases. Unleash the 3Ghz Uncharted 4.

AMD sells chips this time, they didn't license it (probably it isn't even possible with x86).
How come yelds are their problem?

I little world dude: NOISE.
I know quite a number of gamers concerned about it (including myself)

Low yields potentially reduce available stock for launch as well as increase manufacturing cost (even though Sony aren't manufacturing themselves, they are paying for these chips to get made: Either the asking price would be higher from the offset or future price decreases would be delayed).

But why would Sony increase the clock speed for a pretty minimal gain but potential stability, when their overall system has quite a few advantages already?

I get the feeling we're arguing two different things then.

Yeah okay, you CAN upclock through a patch provided you've already tested the chips and the console to be reliable at that clock.

The question still remains though, why not just set it at that clock in the first place?

To answer the other gaffer, with that form factor and power draw of the console, I don't think noise is much of a priority for Sony imo.

The silicone itself can surely handle it, but if the cooling can't then it's irrelevant.

We all make fun of Fox but i kept the show in the background, and that gal is quite knowledgeable. She sees Ratchet and asks Sucker Punch guy what is Ratchet doing there....

She knew that but she didn't know the word controller? dats pretty funny doh

Maybe in the back of her mind she was thinking "are these even called controllers anymore?" lol...
