Famitsu: Monster Hunter 4 sells 1.875 million copies, 3DS sells 298k units in 2 days

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Iwata popping that champagne! *laughs*

Now get working on Wii U lol ;)

On a serious note, MH4 sales are impressive to say the least.

Comparing MH4 sales to total vita install base at least has logic to it. Plenty of people on here claim if MH4 was for Vita it would do the same if not better than the 3DS version will.

People are pointing out how stupid that theory is based on the fact Vita would need to sell 1 million units just to even be able to come close to selling the 2 days of 3DS MH,

Now bring on dat Pokémon!

I also wonder if MH and Pokémon have a different enough audience that the latter will still give 3DS hardware a similarly large boost. I don't know the demographics that well in Japan.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Yeah hilarious...now expect a lot of similar comparisons once PS4/XBone comes out to WiiU

Can we all just be happy with the great numbers be done with it

Many people have been bitching for years that Capcom switching gears with MH4 was a mistake - this sales + the MH3G performance and its legs shows that it was the right call to make. If you wanna sell + 3 million copies of your game 3DS is the only option right now.

But their logic is that Vita having MH announced would have made it outsell 3DS, or something (despite PSP selling half of what DS sold, with MH exclusivity).

On the flip side, yeah Capcom chose correctly. Clearly. I have no doubts that Vita would be in a better situation than it is had they gotten this game instead, but.... Im not sure it would have had the user base the 3DS has today. I'm nearly sure it wouldn't have. For a time people really thought this game wouldnt do as well, or well at all because of the difference in buyers of a Nintendo Handheld versus a Sony handheld, but these numbers just killed that idea.

MH4 to 3DS Announcement thread

Also kills the idea that it wouldnt do numbers because it wasnt a P4 (portable) named entry. Its very clear that the playerbase for the game understood the transition.

Yeahhh I remember people saying MH was gonna be a dead series when it switched gears to Nintendo. Good times. Console loyalty isn't as prevalent in Japan as it is in the west from what I've seen.

Next weeks sales are gonna be interesting. If this is only 2 days I cant imagine what having a full week under its belt would be.

Next week will indeed be interesting. Low inventory could at least initially lead to a pretty massive drop off in sales of the game and hardware could still be pretty high

Those are really good numbers. Especially those hardware sales. Between Monster Hunter and Pokemon, the 3DS is going to do some pretty ridiculous stuff to close out the year.

It's just a comparison. I wasn't especially trying to point out that Vita is selling bad, just that MH sold around as much as the Vita has in a significantly shorter time-period. Obviously, as was pointed out, price is a factor.

If I was making a point about how poor the sales of Vita were, I'd have pointed out how no game to our knowledge has cracked 600K in Japan, let alone 1.8 million or how Vita was sub-10K last week, but I didn't, because that wasn't my point.

I don't give a shit about fanperson bullcrap.

I agree that comparing MH4 sales to It Who Must Not Be Named is fair game, but "Vita am cry" type comments are worthless. "But Wii U!" isn't any better though.

Not surprising.

Selling in 2 days what all MH clones on the Vita might sell in their lifetime... Sony should have locked this down.

MH4 to 3DS Announcement thread

2 years since that thread was made and the comments still haven't changed.

How about instead of vita am cry etc. ios/android am cry. This is a win for gamers, we should all celebrate... hopefully japanese companies take note and support dedicated gaming devices more and lay off the mobile bs trend.

That female demographic.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
The scary thing is that this game will get another huge bump come Christmas and New Years. Wow!!!

Yeah, they are missing out on that money. The 3DS isn't the piracy haven that the previous console was, yet the games are not there (yet!!)

Oh you are absolutely right. I feel that was the worst impact the slow start of the 3DS caused. A ton of titles ended up placed on hold or cancelled and many development resources were put to Mobile out of belief it was the end of handhelds.

Hopefully we see some turn around as far as handheld support

People were still optimistic back then but that was the announcement that (rightly) started the Vita is dead meme, because a lack of Monster Hunter 4 or anything even remotely as popular and MH4 appearing on 3DS instead is what will continue to keep the Vita down in Japan.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
It had a better debut than ALL the main Pokèmon titles, except for Black and White. However, all Pokèmon titles suffered severe shortages at launch. MH too, but still :p

That's impressive. I wonder how it will do in the rest of the world.

Personally I'm already fatigued on this franchise after playing just MH3U. I enjoyed it to a point but wasn't a fan of the grind, control schemes, and the hardware it ran on (3DS). After playing Dark Souls very recently I don't think I can go back to the MH formula of gameplay (no PVP).

If there is online voice-chat for the North American release I may consider it.

Sony dropped the fucking ball man edit: it's kinda crazy when you think about it.

I don't think there was a whole lot Sony could do about it, Capcom took a gamble on the bigger market and jumped ship. MH fans came with them and now clearly they have hooks in on a lot of new fans too.

If anything, we'll probably see some of the copy-cat games appear, in the same way that games featuring Animal Crossing-like elements have been popping up (Disney game, Denpa Men 3, Fantasy Life).

Everything sells well on 3DS in Japan.

Except the games that flop - E.X. Troopers, Cinderella RPG, etc.

Alright, here's a comparison that actually makes sense! This is what people should be talking about instead of the ridiculous meaninglessness of comparing MH4 software sales to Vita LTD hardware.

MH portable is now Japan's most popular video game IP after Pokemon I believe.

It probably goes like this:

1-Pokemon
2-MH
3-Animal crossing
4-DQ
5-Mario Kart
etc

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Insane, some people thought it wouldn't do quite as well as the last one did on PSP. Hopefully this means more 3DS titles for 2014 and 2015 from 3rd parties.

Come on Squenix, announce DQ XI already.

I'm still not completely convinced MH is bigger than AC. AC is veeeeeerrry leggy. We'll see.

Sony were so incredibly foolish to not secure an exclusive deal for MH4. Instead they decide to make countless clones to chase the sales.

And now they're all attached to Nintendo. 3DS is the penultimate example of hardware specs being a moot argument.

5 million lifetime could be possible, it could be the best selling in franchise history O.O

If it gets its worldwide release it'll definitely be the best selling in Franchise History. Especially if they get Miiverse up and running on the 3DS. Having MH4 Miiverse alone will expose the game to a bunch of new people who have never heard of it before.

Even on WiiU I've seen posts from people who've never even heard of MH before about getting the game because they simply saw the MiiVerse community.
