PAX: CGW/GFW Radio “The Brodeo” Reunion #2: Even Eli Knows What That Means

Ah, great point about ludo-dissonance.

I hate how it's become a go-to form of video game criticism in the enthusiast press that carries a negative connotation. I swear, I never see it used in a positive/indifferent sense in this area; it's always negative. And that's really unfortunate because ludo-dissonance is a wonderfully interesting concept to talk about. Sure, it can shift your opinion of a video game, but it can also just exist as something to think and talk about.

Great show! A few comments:

Shawn brought up the fact that there are virtually no games that present a character though which he himself can identify, and I'm guessing that probably goes for most of us who aren't futuristic super soldiers. There really is a lack of any 'average north american dude' games.

I've always found it weird that this is the case; I always figured that eventually the people who grew up to become game developers would inevitably gravitate towards telling the story of their own lives, much the same way there are tons of novels where the main character is a struggling author. Way back when, I thought the premise of a game like Secret of Evermore, which is basically the misadventures of an American boy and his dog, would be iterated on ad nauseam as more western developers were given opportunities to tell stories. The fact that there hasn't been "Revenge of the Nerds" of video games really does strike me as strange.

Japan on the other hand seems to have embraced this approach, with games like Persona being basically high school sims, or Catherine which I haven't played, but seems to be along these lines as well.

man that was really great. it is remarkable how easily they get in the flow. loved the gone home discussion.

it would be really great if you guys could do more out of the game type stuff. there's a few times in that panel where ideas are mentioned but not really fully explored and you know back in the old days they'd return to them next episode or in the future but here it's just gone.

Is Gone Home worth not spoiling for myself?

Most of the time I hear it it's misused anyway.

The thing is, you know if they do a kickstarter - even for any modest amount - they are gonna get a massive amount of money from the community just because. Doesn't matter what they ask for, they gonna get paid. And because of that they'll feel a moral obligation to expand their plans in order to use up the money but in the end resenting the time sink it turns into.

That's how I feel a kickstarter would turn out.

I don't think a kickstarter for this type of thing would be justified, even if the guys weren't so against it. Out of the Game worked just fine, even with the slight awkwardness of Skype. There's no reason that couldn't continue outside of their schedule - money can buy better equipment but ultimately they all need to be able to sit down for 90 mins every so often. I'm assuming the scheduling issue is the only reason we never got more OOTG, which was very close to being GFW Radio 2.0

With that said, I'd be backer day 1 if it did happen!

I was always a coffee geek. Just never mentioned it on the show. I was a Blue Bottle regular when he still roasted in a closet behind a Mexican food restaurant in Oakland. Still can't go for a $15 cup, though.

the thing I really miss about GFW radio is that there really isn't any 'characters' in gaming podcasts these days that is similar to shawn elliot. intellectual discussions mixed with feces.

I like the fetishization that coffee nerds have over the instruments used to prepare coffee.

Some more thoughts on Gone Home:

I pretty much "role played" the sister for the most part; putting stuff back in their proper place and trying not to leave evidence of my snooping in other people's rooms..
..except when I got to the kitchen. For some strange reason, when I opened the fridge and a bunch of stuff fell out, I was strangely compelled to just fucking trash the place like a drunken Gallagher. I threw everything I could on the floor, stuffed magazines and books in the fridge, I even tossed the ice cream in the microwave and was sorely disappointed when I couldn't actually turn it on. "If my parents can't be arsed to be here when I fly back to the country then so be it!" Fruit everywhere. Happy Anniversary you ingrates.

Other than that, one small gripe I had was actually the same problem I had with the Bioshock games; the player is allowed to wander freely after activating an audiolog, which is great, but if I happen to trip a world-event in the middle of a journal, either one of them would get cut off, or the audio would run simultaneously causing me to miss both pieces of information. This results in my freezing like an electrocuted lab mouse the moment I trigger any audiolog, for fear that the next thing I find will cue up another.

60 minutes felt like a warm-up... agonizingly brief!

Still great to have you guys all in the same room again. If there's a next time, I'll definitely fight for a better time slot.

Thanks for the shout out!

For me, the Kickstarter would be more about the incentive rather than the cost to produce. Sort of a built-in deadline. Even if not everybody made it every month, I'd love to hear more.

I do not understand how this can still be the most insightful video game podcast while still being the most fun video game podcast.

Every time I finish one of these reunion shows, I get irrationally bummed.

Just finished listening to this. You guys need to somehow make this semi regular. Make it work please. And did someone ask Robert if A Life Well Wasted is dead or in hiatus? That was so good also. I would Kickstart the hell out of it.

It's not ideal but a lot of my favorite podcasts (MBMBAM, Insert Credit and some Giant Bomb stuff) are done via Skype. I enjoyed Out Of The Game pretty much as much as I loved GFWRadio just so I could hear these guys talk about whatever. I guess what I'm saying is if this crew genuinely wants to continue with further podcasts I hope not always being able to talk about games or being in the same room doesn't hold them back.

Doing it like Insert Credit would be rad, streamed live on youtube. They even take questions from viewers after the main show.

It pisses me off that these guys are not taking advantage of a wonderful opportunity to touch so many peoples lives in a positive way. I can't tell you how many posts I see that say "welp, my day is made" just to be able to listen to some dudes bullshit on a podcasts.

No matter what the brodeo says, the magic isn't gone. It's still there. This could be successful again. A gfw radio revival would without a doubt get thousands of listeners. It's a shame they don't produce content that so many people in this world enjoy and hold so dearly to their hearts. I guess I am being nostalgic, but there is no good reason why a show I love so much can't/won't continue. It clearly isn't for lack of funding or resources because nerds would give an arm and a leg to fund it. Lack of time? Wanting to separate yourselves from the podcast and create a new image of themselves in the industry? What's wrong with the brodeo?

All joking aside.

Would a member of the crew care to respond?

I think they pretty much answered this on the reunion cast. It's just damn hard to coordinate people in different parts of the country and with different schedules.

Also on the Kickstarter, I'm not so sure. I sort of like the idea that GFW resonates with the type of people that would raise an eyebrow at the idea of Kickstarting a skype call in the first place. I'm as big a fan of GFWRadio as anyone, and I know I personally wouldn't drop a dime unless I suddenly found myself in a position of insane wealth.

I have this weird image in my head of some legendary message board poster kickstarting his return to a forum. Shit is just wack.

Spoil away. Its an incredibly generic story you have seen in teen movies for decades. Hearing the brodeo again is worth far more.

The part where you referenced an entirely different medium to downplay it's relevance is pretty telling. Or the part where it was a means of conversation for them long enough to keep it a topic when they were at a convention full of new games. If it's good enough for the brodeo, it's probably good enough for you.

Well so much for my dumb theory.

Time to conquer the US and enforce one single time zone across the entire country, like China has. No excuses then!

They've tried to bring it back with Out of the Game a while back but it didn't seem to stick. I feel like if they managed to have a core of 2-3 guys, and just rotate guests/the other members it would be good. You pretty much have to have Shawn and Jeff in my opinion, but other than that I feel like rotating 3rd/4th chairs could work depending on who's available. Another bummer is quality issues; you'd need to have good microphones/recording setup.

Robert: Where the heck did you find $15 coffee in Seattle? I've lived here for years and haven't seen anything quite that crazy :p

Forgot to post since I was listening at work but RE: No one cares about the magazine anymore-
I do! I still have all of my GFW and CGW mags and will go through them on occasion. Especially Jeff Green's column and the little bit of office place conversation that was put at the end of the later issues to incentive people to listen to the cast.

I actually just went through my first issue I owned the other weekend (mostly to scan a wild Voodoo soundcard ad that involved a decapitated woman). I forgot the month, but it was the 2001 Black and White preview issue. The Greenspeak column was really hilarious and got me to subscribe as a kid, so thanks Jeff Green. Idk if my life would lead to me ever listening to the podcast if it wasnt for your writing.
