TLOU team originally working on a new Jak and Daxter

the level design in jak ii isn't bad. it's fucking horrendous.

ignore the tag. i'm serious. outside of the few platforming sections there are, it's a fucking abysmal experience.

Explain how? I remember a fair few platforming sections. Hell, the Mountain part is very challenging platforming.

Platforming.

I've never played Jak and Daxter, but if Naughty Dog wanted to give me a more realistic styled version for next gen I'd bite for sure.

I was there and really enjoyed the talk. That new Daxter look was quite cool I think. But made to choose, I'm glad we got TLoU. :)

I remember reading a lengthy article on 1up where Naughty Dog explained that they were working on something and Sony asked them to make a 3rd person shooter instead, in order to compete with Gears. Pretty shitty motive and method when it comes to suits dictating creative direction, but ND was never a stranger to doing whatever was hot at the time... like Jak Theft Auto... Lost was poppin' back then, and Uncharted has been a serious crowd pleaser, which lead to TLoU, which met every trend possible. So I guess it worked out.

I would like to see this J&D game happen at some point.

Also, wait...

In the Q&A he says they're busy with DLC but that he and Straley are choosing between two projects:

A. TLOU-franchise game.
B. New IP!? Which apparently is "not as bleak".

I now just realized that what I want is for Naughty Dog to first release a new IP with the Straley/Druckman-team then go back to TLOU after they've familiarized themselves with the system. They should take their time and come back to it in a "YES! FINALLY!" thing.

It would be nice to see Sony take on a full 3D platformer that can rival what the Galaxy series did. No 2D or 2.5D titles, as good as they are/can be.

They made a great decision, let it stay in the past or let another dev give it a whirl on Vita
Bigger and better things to do

OK, you're good people.

(Was that fourth game really that good?)

Was the lost frontier any good?

I really enjoyed Lost Frontier, but as I said, I haven't played it in years so it could be a case of rose tinted glasses and my thinking it's a lot better than it actually was.

Let me just warn you, as a fan of the franchise, do not play the Vita version. The framerate is horrible. Especially for the 1st & 3rd games.

Get it on PS3 if you want the definitive versions of the trilogy, because if you pass judgement off of the Vita version, you will end up hating the series.

Thanks for the heads up. Not the first time I've heard this, but I recently played some of the the first game on Vita and didn't notice any significant frame-rate issues, but I'll take this as all the warning I need. As I also have the game on PS3 (thank you Plus), I'll set those to download overnight.

Enjoy playing a slightly less aggravating version of Jak 2, as I believe in the HD collection version you don't take damage when running into other cars, but you did in the original PS2 version.

Instead we got a movie :(

TLoU isn't Beyond/Heavy Rain. Even though it didn't live up to the original demo's promise it still has better AI than every other shooter and it can offer up more dynamic moments than them. It did more for its genre than Jak did for the tired platformer genre at the time.

edit: I guess I should say the open world genre too. At the time everyone was copying GTA 3 so Jak 2 and 3 weren't doing anything important there either.

It would be interesting to see another team pick this up. I would love to see what a Jack and Daxter game would look like with the "E" Daxter.

the phrase "TLoU franchise" gives me almost the same feeling that "Breaking Bad spin off" does

Probably in the minority here, but i actually kinda dig that daxter design. Ultimately though, we got TLoU instead, which is my current GOTY. I can't really complain. Plus i feel the jak series got worse with each one, so more of that is hardly an exciting prospect for me. But still, hopefully they'll make a new one like precursor legacy some time down the road, cos that game was incredible.

no. we didn't.

Jak 2 and Jak 3 had much better platforming sections than J&D. The train bomb level in Jak 3 where you have to shoot the switches to make the railings fall is the best platforming sequence I've ever played in any video game ever.

God I get so angry everytime I see this. Would keeping the art style of the first games really be that hard?

I feel like if they did make this, it wouldn't be a more traditional platformer like the first game was. I could see it being a primarily open world/sandbox game, with Uncharted style platforming and shooting mechanics.

Good, if they were to make another Jak and Daxter I would want it to be lighthearted and a pure 3D platformer like The Precursor Legacy. I was never big on the whole gritty and edgy Jak from Jak 2 onwards although I still enjoyed them.

I don't even remember that from my playing Jak 2 back in the day. I'm kinda surprised I don't, maybe I blocked it out? Anyway, glad that it's been addressed though.

Platforming.

People tend to ignore those sections because it doesn't fit their preconceived notions of Jak 2 being a grimdark GTA clone, even though in reality this is the furthest thing from the truth. Fact of the matter is, Jak 2 had a similar platforming focus as the first Jak game did, and its platforming missions were among the best in any 3D platformer ever.

They tried to make Jak 2 resemble a GTA game to increase its sales potential, but beneath the surface it retained all of the platforming elements that made the first game great, while sprinkling in some new elements of its own. All told, it worked perfectly and ended up being one of the best games on the PS2.

The Jak hate is so fucking stupid.
I would gladly accept a Jak 4 over an Uncharted 4

Jak 2>> Uncharted 2

Yup, For example, in that bit scaling the Baron's palace and seeing the entirety of Haven below you. Damn.

Jak 2 did indeed have some really good platforming sections, the mountain temple comes to mind, Mar's Tomb with the various puzzles had some neat sections as well.

Something like J&D could be outsourced to a team like Sanzaru. Putting half of ND these days on a game like that would be a mistake.

My main beef with jak 2 was simply what they did to jak himself. If warrior within can get flak for it's emo, angsty character change, then i don't see why jak 2 can't. The GTA template didn't help matter either, granted, but it was mainly the change in tone i hated. By jak 3 the second game had tainted the series to badly i'd almost completely lost interest.

Yeah, Jak II had far more actual platforming in terms of jumping on things/over obstacles. Jak & Daxter TPL was more exploration based. The only real platforming on that was the construction area in Spider Cave, the Lost Precursor City, the last level, and hopping over stuff with the Flut Flut.

I think the Daxter looks awesome (A and B), not sure what you guys are smoking. I also enjoyed Jak 3 immensily, wouldn't mind them doing a sequel or a reboot. As much as I enjoy The Last of Us I feel that it ended perfectly, it doesn't need to be turned into a franchise imo.

That's a bummer.

What a shame that today's mainstream prefers zombie games over 3d platformers.

Maybe one day the genre will be reborn like 2d platformers today.

And so they made a good game instead.

Wonky zombie uncharted, sure dude. Whatever your into.

Anyways, I am sad.

GOD WHY. Just pay someone else to do it, seriously clearly you like making them. This isnt like megaman where no one wants to do it. Get someone else decent to do it.

Couldn't care less about Jak & Daxter (mainly because I haven't gotten around to playing any of the series yet), but I really think there is some potential in creating a game with more realistic animal humanoids in a style similar to what is shown in that artwork..

Well this just brought a little shimmer of hope into my mind with getting another Jak game. This was easily my favorite PS2 franchise and I would love to see a return.
