DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

In the end, though, no matter how the images look at the close (and it's clear PS4 wins), on a technical spectrum what this highlights is even more damning.

We're talking about a game on PS4 that not only fifty percent more pixels on screen thanks to the resolution, but also has a better framerate, AO and other features. We're talking about a game that just on a technical perspective is dominating the XBO. So, that part of the argument people have been having around launch games is over - there are major, HUGE differences.
It is a little surprising. You'd expect with the launch crunch that basically the teams overall goal would be to get a workable, saleable SKU for each platform. So I expected the situations to be closer. Lower frame-rates, even at a third less resolution, with less effects/no ambient occlusion and poor anti-aliasing is pretty damning really.

LOL it has begun.

Seriously, this is the FIRST wave of games and the difference is actually bigger than I personally thought. People are doing to take these images and claim victory for whatever way based on visuals but the fact is staggering how much better the PS4 is.

I didn't think the difference for multi-platform games was going to be anything over this current generation of 360/PS3 but right out of the game it's already more than that. Eep.
I was being sarcastic lol

that blur is caused by upscaling from 900p, fxaa and youtube compression

Some posters seem to assume everyone who complains about the blur on ps4 is some clueless joe who likes sharpening and other post process crap on their tvs, or one of those philistines who use sweetfx in the screenshot thread.

The ps4 version is blurry (in the jackfrag videos, and it will be blurry on your own tv!)
please don't use the botched DF videos as damage control for the ps4 version, thanks

Thank you. People sweeping it under the rug by holding on to the fact that DF had a different setup is ridiculous. It's blurry on all comparison videos.

The most crushing thing about this thread aren't the blacks in the XB1 shots, it's the fact that some people seem to genuinely prefer blown out, sharpened to death footage with edge haloing on top of aliasing you can cut logs with.

For the sake of my personal mental health I'll simply assume they are all too heavily invested in their platform choice to see clearly. That, or looking at the comparisons on a cell phone screen. In a storm.

Also, I'd really expect more from DF than calling an upscale which has such obvious ringing and edge haloing artifacts good in any way. These are supposed to be the experts?

I'm a casual salesmen at a pretty big electronics retailer here in Aus, way more people prefer the oversaturated piece of crap demo we have running on our Sharp models than the excellent 4k Sony demos

Insane For Sony
scaling and fxaa are the devil ,there is no defending the way either of them looks , especially not by comparing them
Apparently it's too hard to just do something as simple as 1080p no AA...
1080p no AA would probably incur larger performance hit than 900p FXAA. Also, IMO it's worth keeping in mind that FXAA looks worse on monitor than it does on TVs which are more forgiving to non-ideal IQ.

In any case, I hope sony hurries up with their TMAA solution (which is what I'm guessing KZ now uses) to make it available for other devs.

I'll spell it out for you as you're having a hard time understanding.

Xbox One version:-

PS4 version:-

The Xbox One and PC versions both have the same textures on the arm and the skybox which shows the Xbox One version was built off the PC build.
For some reason they PS4 version is different.

The PC version has no clouds either?! PS4 > PC? /s

I personally expected difference between High and Medium and resolution cuts. Its HBAO and resolution.

I'd say that 45%less pixels, lack of hbao, no AA, no volumetric clouds and possibly missing ambient lighting is indeed representing the gap in power. I never thought that what I'm seeing right now would be possible at launch. But I like gaf these days... bargaining everywhere.

Honestly the framerate drops bother me more than anything. When I'm playing and really get into it I can forget about the aliasing and the lesser effects, but frame drops are alot more jarring to me and can't be ignored as easily.

Guy at Gamestop today asked me why I switched my preorder over to XB1, showed him this thread, he couldn't believe the difference, said it was day and night. *shrug* Im sure PS4 version will be ok too, just less details.

Well you made the right decision for yourself then.

I do have to say that i disagree with your conclusion. i prefer a more natural look with lot's of detail in light and dark areas and less sharpening (and more anti aliassing).
I can't stand jaggies.

But to each his own. Enjoy!

Just changed my preorder to XB1. Now I see why its worth the extra $$

Really looks on par from what I played at the Xbox One event. It's not bad, but the aliasing is a bummer for sure. I think both are a bit disappointing, but 60fps (if it is...)

I don't understand how people actually get personally invested in this.

I'd totally understand if I was saying things that were factually incorrect, like saying the Xbox One version has higher res textures or better shaders, or whatever, but everyone's blowing a gasket because I like the way the Xbox One version looks more.

It's funny as fuck, though.

Agreed. It's like you killed their puppy or something. You simply aren't allowed to prefer the XB1 over the PS4 or you will be insulted, called a shill or have people looking into your post history being cyber detectives.

I'm with u, in those gifs the XB1 version looks better. In real life it may be a different story.

We've known for a long time that the difference would be larger than PS3 and 360.

On paper, for sure. I just didn't think we'd see those exact figures out of the gate.

Just not sure how anyone can even try to spin this as a victory for Xbox One, I'm pretty graphics blind, I say it all the time, but that all this information is pretty staggering.

It's cool people prefer the "look" of the Xbox One stuff but don't try to spin it as the superior version or "not much difference" ... that's just completely insane.

Hey ben...how many sock puppet accounts do you have at neogaf? Just curious and i hope the mods ban your IP. If you are over the age of 14, i feel kinda sad for ya as only a delinquent acts this way lol

Okay, if you really insist
So your truthiness is:
Xbone version only 1280x720
PS4 version with a 50% lead in output pixels overall
PS4 regaining 60fps, Xbone not.
Xbone with framerate issues
Xbone with aliasing issues
Xbone "only a stone's throw from the sub-720p resolution" / "highly noticeable sub-pixel break-up"

?
Cool!

Joking!

Thruthiness means ignoring objective evidence, and relying on what you want to be true. Perfect for those who think the Xbone version looks better.

Not a very good one according to DF.
If that is true games will suffer from a bad upscaler with PS4 versions all the generation. This is important to be clarified.

In the IGN comparisson video faces are way clearer in the XB1 version. So, this is not only due to Digital Foundry having messed up the capture options.

This is history in the making, guys. After the sound chip bullshit xbox fans just discovered their latest silly talking point. Misterxmedia is probably updating his page as we speak, it's all about upscalers now even though there's little to no evidence.

Don't tell me things like that.

At least now I realize why CD Projekt RED continue to release those terribly oversharpened screenshots.

i think we need clarification regarding the upscaler on PS4.

Will it get better software wise over firmware updates?
can one maybe turn it off?
or will it just be shite again?

shu, step in for rescue!

It'll probably never be as good as Xbone's upscaler where 720p doesn't matter because it still looks incredible when upscaled to 1080p. Truthfact.

Look like it isn't well lock, when drop - xbox running ~35fps whereas PS4 on about ~50fps

Not a good 60fps locked for both console.

Calling everyone that is trying to point out that it is just some fucked up gamma that makes the XB look like that "salt"ty shows you are the one heavily invested in all this!

Anyway, you can get the "xbox one" look easily on your PS4. Just go into your TV settings and push saturation and sharpening to the max.

The problem is that you can pick comparisons that favor either syste:

Here, the X0 version looks better to me:

While here, the PS4 is way better:

So I can definitely understand why there is no real consensus.

That said, objectively and seeing both versions in motion, the PS4 version wins by a huge margin.

Digital Foundry and their screwed up contrast/sharpness for the Xbox One version has deluded many. If this was their intent, then bravo. A job well done.

No AA solution. 720p. And framerates are still worse. Unbelievable that three months ago, nobody really expected a 30%+ difference at launch, on third party software. If Ghosts is truly 1080p versus 720p, with AA and framerate results like this...

500 dollars. Crazy.

Actually, yes, it does. Because to go so far as to imply that people have shitty vision just because they don't prefer what you prefer is being a bitter fanboy.

I'm not going to sit here and debate with you about every single detail about the game. I know that the PS4 version has less aliasing, a higher resolution, a higher framerate, and HBAO, but I really don't give a fuck, because at a glance, the Xbox One version is more aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.

So you can go ahead and go on about my shitty vision, and I'll keep calling you a bitter little fanboy. Or you can accept my preference just like I accept yours. Notice how I haven't given you any shit about preferring the PS4 version's looks. Notice how I have made no cracks about your vision or your "odd preference."

It's your choice. I'm good either way.

Well I'm sorry you couldn't take that joke. :p

Call people what you want, man. But nobody is a bitter fanboy just because they don't understand why you would prefer the look of something that is so technically inferior.

Pretty much. Most people have no idea how to judge image quality. Though to be fair, before I learned about it I too used to think more saturation and crushed black = better.

Yeah, I'm not sure why everyone is assuming I don't know how to set up a TV lol
If I had to choose a blurry/washed out image or an image where the contrast and sharpness is turned up to a hundred, I'm gonna go with the latter.
At least I could potentially turn down the sharpness, whereas the blurriness on the PS4 is a result of the post-processing and not something I could change, right?

How exactly would you be able to turn down the sharpening filter in the XBO version? It's part of XBO's rendering, process you can't change that anymore than I can change shadow quality on either console.

Can You point me where? Because i've skimmed through the whole video twice and except for 0:40 [PS4 advantage] and 1:10 [Xbone advantage] moments, the difference between two platforms is between 2-4 fps max.
The scene where they are on the boat is the longest period shown with framerate difference. Overall, even if the difference is 4FPS, it is practically always in favour of PS4 version when it's matching footage. Clearly it doesn't really matter, but it's happening despite much lower resolution.
