Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

The hell? Someone said this? Only the PC-Engine can compete with Genesis on shmups.

Also, TFIV is the trump card.

I think it is unfair to compare PCE with the Genesis for the genre. Most of the awesome shmups are on CD. Just comparing Hu to Genesie/MD and it is the latter that comes out WAY on top.

I'm just saying it's a contest, unlike SNES vs. Genesis. And hey, if you could count the CD add-ons for both the NEC and Sega hardware you have yourself a contest. PCE-CD brings a lot more to the table than the SegaCD does. (Although I love Android Assault and Robo Aleste, to be sure.)

Just scanned that thread. Why are you even wasting your time? When you have retards that think Axelay is a good shmup or that the SNES had the superior shmups, it's time to get out before you get infected with the dumb.

i never learn. i never learn.

Thanks to everyone that encouraged me to go for SOTN emulation.

I had never tried emulation for Saturn before, but SSF works great. Took me a while to figure it out, i wasnt able to virtual mount the image so that SSF recognized the virtual drive so I just burned the image on a CDR and it worked fine. Plays and looks pretty good.

Speaking of the Saturn Castlevania (actually called Dracula X: Nocturne in the Moonlight), I've found that not everything in the Saturn version made it to the PSP game. So here's a few exclusive music tracks you'll find in this version:

Vampie Kller Remix 1

Often regarded as the best Bloody Tears rendition

Guardian (Maria is a boss in this version)

Maria's default theme - THE 2nd Vampire Killer remix

And lastly, hidden in the Saturn disc is developer notes!

Got my futuristic racing gloves on the other day:

Rigged up my Saturn and tested them both. 2097 has a longer draw distance on the Saturn version than the PS1. Which helps on the jungle level as the grainy backdrop of the PS1 version is always infront of you, while on the Saturn it gets hidden behind corners mostly. The framerate is lower on the Saturn thouh, but the textures look slightly more detailed.

I love this series on the PS1, been emulating them a lot lately as they look incredible in full hd, They still are a lot of fun and the 2097(XL for the US) and 3 version still have really nice gameplay. It feels so smooth to control when you get things right and don't bump into the sides.

I'd love to emulate Saturn games on something else than SSF, with a considerable resolution upgrade and smoothing

I always loved the DC controller. Never understood the hate but I have small, fat hands so it melds with my meat mitts perfectly. It's probably not top 5 but I liked it more than the DualShock by a large amount.

My only beef with the DC controller is that the dpads can get a little run down. it still has my favorite analog stick though.

Can someone explain what this is?

Google "Action Replay 4M Plus". There's tons of guides and conversations about it. And to clarify about the DC controller, the face buttons and analog stick feel cheap, the D-pad sucks compared to Saturn. The lack of dual sticks makes FPS games borderline unplayable.

the Japanese build of the controller is slightly different than the US one. the plastic used on the trigger buttons is of flimsier construction (they're a bit thinner on the inside) and are more prone to breakage. i broke at least 3 Japanese DC controllers playing Jet Set Radio back in the day.

I ruined one of my 4MB carts because, before the Action Replay with the 4MB came out, I would swap out my Action Replay with the 4MB during a small window of time you have during the boot screen. Thankfully I had like four of them because of the two Vs games, Darkstalkers and Dungeons and Dragons.

I still have no idea why 2097 came out in Europe and Japan, but skipped America entirely.

Also not sure why they added a Daytona USA/Sega Rally-style countdown timer. I very rarely like those.

Pulled these out of the closet to try on my Saturn via RGB (disregard EWJ SE, I was trying out the SEGA CD, too).

MKRE looks absurd.

The countdown timer is so pointless. If you're even an average racer you never get close to timing out, at least not on the first three difficulties.

I assume 2097 came out in Europe because Wipeout was huge in Europe and from a European studio, and it came out in Japan because the Saturn was still selling software in 1998. The US was dead, dead, dead.

SaturnGAF, is there a reliable way to get some replacement cases for Saturn games? None of mine have any cracks but some of them are scuffed to hell and back.

No. All you can do is buy cheap donor games, and then you have the 'ethical' dilemma of trashing perfectly fine games.

I figure there'd be some money in this if someone could make replacements.

Since SaturnGAF likes to know the going prices of some of the rarer titles, the two games I let list for seven days, starting at $4, on eBay sold for this much:

Panzer Dragoon Saga $263.00
Psychic Assassin $380.00

I think PDS sold for $20-30 lower than what it has been going for while Psychic Assassin sold for about $30 more.

IIRC the PSP Maria doesn't play like the NITM Maria.
NITM also has the two exclusive areas and a few unique pieces of equipment.

it's been a few years since I last replaced my Saturn battery.

yesterday I got the screen

are my saves gone?

doesn't the AR4M+ have save backups?

is there any reason to get a separate memory card if you already have one of those?

Some games support saving directly to the card. PAR4M+ is recognized as a either a cheat device or RAM cart, so it doesn't allow direct save in-game. You'll have to enter the memory manager between games and copy the saves over manually.

It's only a convenience thing. You won't need one unless there is a game that ONLY saves to memory cards and doesn't support the battery backup (I can't think of any)

The basic idea of giving you onboard saving and actually a battery that runs this together with a clock (the PS1 didn't have any clue what time/date it was) is actually really nice. It let people actually save their games straight out of the box without having to purchase expensive memory cards. However, with no battery life bar or an option to replace it safely while the machine is running kind of makes it a save option that one day will die on you.

Has anybody swapped it while having the power on?

So, my younger sister wants a Saturn after playing Sonic all Stars Racing Transformed.

So besides Nights and Burning Rangers what games do you guys recommend?

Hexen comes to mind.

Shining games (the Holy Ark, Force III, Wisdom to a lesser extent), Saturn Bomberman, the Panzer Dragoon trilogy (especially Saga), the Lobotomy FPS trilogy (Powerslave, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D, albeit Powerslave is the only one that isn't technically inferior to the corresponding PC version), the Clockwork Knight games (they're really easy, but I particularly enjoyed the second), Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun (need to be able to import it), Street Fighter Collection (Alpha 2 Gold and Super Street Fighter 2/Turbo, sure), etc

Just a word of warning. If your wallet can't take a little bloody nose, maybe you ought to go back home and crawl under your bed. It's not safe out here. It's wondrous, with games to satiate desires both subtle and gross...

But it's not for the timid.

(Not-TNG-quote version: Be forewarned, most of the games on this list are incredibly friggin' expensive)

I personally would not recommend Burning Rangers.

If she liked SaSRT, Sega Rally paved the way and the Saturn port is pretty good!
There is a very affordable 3-Pack which contains Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA.
Panzer Dragoon Zwei is far less expensive than its RPG successor, and in my opinion a lot more fun.

Going to be honest, those are some weird Saturn recommendations... :) To each their own!

At least your card slot works

My dad got me zap snowboarding tricks and a foreign game playing cart one xmas

Killed the cart slot on my first saturn so my original mem card even wouldnt work ;_;

So my first saturn doesnt work with a cart, basically had to buy a second saturn. Which didnt happen until years later since i was a child when this happened and we didnt have the money to replace it :((((

Also i would kill for megamix hd. Best
3D. Fighter. Ever. I stand by that
