NPD Sales Results for November 2013 [Up3: Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, 3DS, Wii U]

Why, exactly? If SM3DW had such a small impact, it's pretty unlikely that MK8 or SSB will do vastly more for hardware sales.

I highly doubt that Nintendo will kill Wii U next year (though with the possibility of a significant change in management, I won't completely rule it out), but there's no good reason left to reserve judgment.

I think Smash and Kart are the bigger system sellers for them honestly, they have rabid fan bases and have broad appeal (especially Kart). HOWEVER, I also have this feeling that playing it soooooo safe with their games is going to continue to bite them next year. I just haven't convinced myself yet if that is true or not for Smash and Kart. Will people clamor for those games, or will they say eh I played that on the Wii and Smash is on the 3DS? They need a truly unique Nintendo title for 2014 and not just Zelda. The Wii U has really become a been there done that console and they have to prove why that is not the case, and another Donkey Kong, another Smash, another Kart, and another Zelda is not different enough. Wouldn't hurt if that title embraced the online world for once.

Ah, see you got me trying to talk myself out of it. 2014, make or break year. Standing behind it.....maybe.

Mk and Smash are THE big guns. I think WiiU is probably beyond saving, but 3D Mario sold significantly less than they did last gen.

Melee moved the gamecube of all things. MK has done better than its corresponding 3d mario on the last 2 home consoles. They'll probably still do better than 3d world.

I'm not calling "objectively good," just "significantly less horrible." putt the thing back closer to gamecube pace than nintendoomed pace.

Note my choice of words. I don't dispute that MK8/SSB might do more to drive hardware sales than SM3DW did; I just don't see any chance that either will do vastly more.

Sucks for Nintendo but great for me. Picked up a Wii U and a 3ds this month. Love all the games at my disposal. But I really hope Nintendo gets back in the game with the next console.

Melee was a launch game in North America. It is tough to really say Melee moved GCN for US.

What has been the general reaction to the Sony and MS numbers?

No real Sony numbers yet, even with two Sony press releases. The relative closeness has prevented either side from being too obnoxious, I think. Neither side is screwed (yet), and it looks like both with will sell everything they ship in NA in December, though it is surprising to see Sony win early multiplat wars with big Xbox 360 franchises like AC/BF/CoD in America.

Relative to the market? HD gaming is saved. Wii U is finished.

So the WiiU is as dead in the US as it is in the UK.

What now Iwata?

I agree somewhat, my caveat is that they need a unique title for 2014 coupled with Kart and Smash. If they can get all 3 of those to land in 2014 than maybe, just maybe they can make a case for the system to exist beyond 2015.

I kinda thought Vita would get a boost since it has off tv support for PS4 games, bummer it didn't sell that good.

stay alive Vita :'(

oh is it alive?

*squints*

oh, yeah, i hear something that is like a raspy pained breath i guess. It's still -technically- alive I guess :p

Hey, that's not as dead as it could have been. Tearaway's numbers have to hurt though, but I imagine it'll have some legs (as much as a Vita title could have anyway) since the release schedule is so empty.

For a November those are numbers for a console that has been discontinued or something. The Wii might have outsold it.

I'm giving them one more month before calling it

Why one more month? LOL What is December going to prove? If you are going to wait you might as well wait until E3 of next year. At least by then we will know what impact Kart and DK had and what their holiday lineup will look like. All in beautiful Nintendo Direct glory.

People downplaying the XBO results need a reality check: If the PS4 hadn't launched as well it would've been the new biggest launch month ever for a dedicated gaming platform. People claiming the death of gaming probably feel stupid right now, as well they should.

It certainly feels more alive as a platform than it did this time last year.

Dat Christmas time man. Might as well finish off holiday 2013 before calling it!

Yep, the XBO had an amazing launch. Just because the PS4 did even more incredibly means little. Now whether a 500 dollar device outside of the holidays can keep this pace up is another question. I suspect the gap will grow wider outside of the holidays.

Edit: I don't see why Wii U would do that much better in December. The bundles are still bad. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't grow much at all to be honest. What would even be a good result with these numbers?

Your reasoning is ridiculous on so many levels.

Sony will likely not share any actual numbers until after their 'big shipment' this week.

Based on what we're hearing from all the channels globally, Sony is massing up one major shipment to :

- Asia launch countries ( 500k by mortimer's words )
- Spain ( 60k )
- US ( ???k )
- EU ( ???k )

Any new sharings from Sony will probably come a day or two after 20th December, where PS4 will launch in Malaysia, and the rest of their shipments probably selling out as they are.

I don't know if you've noticed, but the first group has very little overlap with the second

3+4>1+360, the gap is < 10k

anddd this blows up the 1234k/420k theory

78 pages to wade through? No thank you. Good sales for the two nextgen consoles. Why in the world is Sony not releasing the PS4 numbers? Also, the per week sales probably confirms MS will dominate December.

Honestly, in 5 days I was expecting no more than 750k for MS. Looks like NA could once again be Xbox land.

Do you know what ps4 sales in its first week were for comparison? It is obvious that sales aren't linear but drop off after the first week for multiple reasons. You're making a big assumption by extrapolating the numbers.
It is possible for MS to do better than Sony in December based on other facts of course, such as more supply to fewer regions for MS.

morning guys,

interesting "numbers", however I don't get some things. if MS did 909k, and many people are suppossing PS4 did 1100-1150, then the gap is much closer than what I expected. then, IF that 1100-1150 figure is real, then how in the hell PS4 managed to sell 1 mill in 24hrs and then only sold 150k for the rest of the month?

maybe it's my reading comprehension so early in the morning (6.40 a.m here), but I don't get it.

anyway, GREAT numbers for both platforms, this looks much better than what I expected

How? The Xbox One is selling well by every available metric we have...even compared to the PS4 launch, which is only slightly better even with supply constraints.

Of that 1 million, probably 850k-900k was US. Canada and Mexico are countries in North America.

Killzone > Dead Rising

Creamsugar beat you to it. :)

Keep pounding at the chest, careful though the lips have turned blue.

lol, still say we should wait until 2014. By E3 we will have a clear understanding. Regardless of what happens the roadmap at Nintendo that is being drawn right now has to be leading to a Hybrid Console releasing in 2016. Which is why I don't think they pull the plug as early as many are saying. 5 years after 3DS, 4 years after WiiU, 1 system to replace both and more importantly develop games for, profit.

The relative lack of further PS4 sales is strictly a supply issue. Sony wanted to get units into their other launch markets, and did so at the expense of the US market. Units are continuing to trickle into stores, but overall Microsoft is doing a better job of keeping US stores stocked than Sony is (regardless of the actual demand for either system).

What has been the general reaction to the Sony and MS numbers?

PS4 is pretty much as expected. At $400 and with the generally positive mood surrounding the platform, I expected some pretty amazing demand for the system, and the performance at launch is evidence of that. I'm personally amazed that the Xbox One sold 909,132 units at $500 in 9 days. If you had said the Xbox One would do these types of numbers at its current price point and with the kind of negativity you were seeing a few short months ago, you would have probably been laughed at. This was also a worldwide launch that Microsoft did with the Xbox One, where systems were spread out to other territories. I expected the Xbox One to do well, but I wasn't expecting numbers this impressive, and I think a lot of people quietly think the same. That's my general reaction anyway. Off to bed early tonight. Will not be staying up as late as I did last night!
