DayZ Early Access Thread - We dont go to Stary Sobor

Few thoughts after my first day of playing:

It's a shame how terrible nighttime looks. Black-and-white and overly contrasted. No color. And I think that's the moon. I do like the overall darkness though and hope that stays.

Getting a lot of connection issues tonight. Different servers with low populations doesn't seem to help. Massive rubber-banding.

Most people I've run across so far have been friendly. I tried to be nice and gave a guy a shovel since he had nothing. After a few minutes he tried to beat me over the head with it - so I axed him.

Scavenging is boring and really needs to be addressed in a game like this. Things seem scattered at random, and always restricted to houses/buildings. I want to see supply caches outside, out in the woods, derelict campsites, dead NPC's, random crates or something.... I'd also like to see some sort to activity or action involved with it - like in State Of Decay. As it is now there's just shit scattered everywhere and you just pick it up. Meh.

Zombies seem pretty easy so far. I've only ever encountered one at a time, and two swipes of the axe and they're done. Seems like most of the game is PvP, but if zombies actually posed a threat, that might give more incentive for people to band together and stop shooting each other on sight.

Game looked really blurry to me - like I was running it at the wrong resolution or something. Turning off Post Processing fixed it.

Using a flashlight to search a house suuuuuucks. Is there a way to equip a one-handed weapon and a flashlight? Because right now it's Doom 3 all over again, except now weapon switching only works every 4th time you hit the button. =/

Game is fascinating. I can't help think that if a game like this was done well, with polish and more depth, it would be the greatest game ever.

Things no one ever said in Standalone.

I don't get the joke. Is it cuz all the sweet looking buildings/locations contain nothing but motorcycle helmets?

I'm done with the game for now. I need more patches/gameplay to keep going. Still, I played for 20 hours and it's quite more than I initially planned. It's a shame that we will most likely not see much major updates in the next 2 weeks, but I can understand that...

Yea I'm done too. Seriously all I've been doing is running around, getting the same loot, then subsequently dying from silent one-hit kills. Getting very bored with it.

I'm gonna ask here, because AusGAF are being lame and not wanting to buy a $30 alpha that I tell them not to buy, Any Australian NeoGAFers rolling in DayZ? Want to group up?

I played once or twice with regular-ass GAF and it wasn't ideal.

What I'm saying is, DayZ needs an OKCupid sister site.

Most of your criticisms are right on the money. For the flashlight thing though, there does exist a head light item that I assume works independent of weapon. FWIW, I loved Doom 3's flashlight mechanic and really liked the tradeoff here in Day Z, too. That said, the best way (unfortunately) to deal with nighttime is to ratchet up your gamma so you can see everything. It's so cheap, but if other people are doing it, you're going to be completely boned giving away your position with a flashlight.

Now that I managed to somewhat fully upgrade my M4 ive embraced my inner monster. If I see they have a gun they die. Unarmed or just an axe I make it clear they need to go around

I was excited to find the bayonet because I would make zombie killing easier then switching weapons etc but then found like you it doesn't work :/

To be fair I have let some gun people go. If they don't get too close Ill usually give a pass.

So I recover from my earlier rape and robbery and log back in to a nearly empty server. I use the gamma trick yall spoke of and sure enough see a guy in my first town from a mile away so I skip it and race to airstrip since I literally had just a flashlight and battery and nothing more. Near Balota and see two guys lights working together and pretty loaded up looking. I watch them search the airport lights on and I gamma stalk. As they finish pillaging one turns on the other and kills from behind. He leaves a few goodies and a bat which I take and as he searches last house I start beating him from the dark. Epic run through street and field ensues as I swing with all my might he bleeding like mad but I can't take him down. Fool disconnects with double blood streams, just vanishes in middle of field... :/

Head back to fully loot his victims body and in the distance see the other guy coming who i'd seen earlier. I hide and watch him enter a barracks. I follow and start attacking, oh yes he has nice clothes and pack! Chase him into a corner, whack whack, he disppears. Assume disconnect...... Story of my DayZ life.

In the mod Deer Stands had guns/loot. In standalone they dont have anything at all.

Even in the mod it was a total crapshoot to actually find loot in them since they were so sought after, but yeah. Deer stands are a total joke now.

In fact it seems like some of the old standbys have been purposely nerfed for loot in standalone. The two story barns with the breezeway and brown single-story log cabin houses used to be so good for loot and now they almost never have anything.

Then on the flip side stables are totally the bees knees since loot spawns down the length of them instead of just by the door like it used to.

I was thinking they should add a 2x2 inventory area for concealing items incase you are taken hostage that only the the player can see. Other players could see it if they do some kind of "Search" option on the player or something.

We also need character progression or something, item progression doesn't feel enough atm since anyone who steals everything from you may as well be basically killing your character. We need some kind of incentive to comply to bandits etc, instead of just going along with it.

Also, new patch should be very soon! Can't wait for First Person only servers.

We had a guy chase us earlier all the way from NWAF to Novy Sobor with a scoped Mosin. Finally Gibonez logs in and kills this fucking guy with a pistol. HE CHASED US ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE FUCKING MAP AND DIES TO A PISTOL!

Then how do I end up dying after all this? By going into a church that nobody was in, turn around, and someone logs in behind me and shoots me. Fuck. That.

Right now SA is missing the gun variety(there's only 4 guns), zombies(there are only 4 zombies), vehicles, animals(there are invincible zombie bunnies), cooking, barbwire, sandbags, temperature, that's about it from the mod.

Meanwhile SA has a decent amount of item crafting, though most still not implemented, greater variety of clothing and equipment, greater variety of food and drink and other items, better inventory system, weapon modding, a much more interactive and interesting world map and there are lot more status affects for the player based on hunger and overall health, though that system as well is not fully implemented.
Thanks for that breakdown

Never again...

Fully geared on a low pop server, I arrive at green mountain. I see something out The Langoliers, right in the middle of the compound: A backpack, a mask, clothes and some other loot on top of each other. As soon as I get near to take a screenshot I get killed instantly.

Pretty cool idea to set traps like that, but I will never be so foolish as to travel to Green Mountain and rush to a loot pile like that.

So I just found a silencer, but doesn't seem to change anything. Not sure if it works in practice ie, wont attract infected. Still, looks cool!

I have heard that the silencer does silence the gun for other players, it just sounds silenced to you

that sounds pretty badass, but I will never stop hating on the gamma thing. so unfair (even though I use it too).

Before finding out about it, I overheard two people talking on mics at nighttime - couldn't see a damn thing. Got into prone and crawled around towards the voices. They were talking about swapping gear and what to keep and what to throw out. One guy dropped his pack just for a second. I snatched it up, heard him go "what the fuck?" then left the server :lol

Karma got me back as I fell off a roof on the next server I joined :(

New north part of Cherno is complete waste of time, dont go there.
Tons of zombies and no loot.

You just don't know where to look! Don't look in the apartments, look in the tons of other loot able buildings up there. That area is where I always hit if I spawn in Cherno.

But in normal buildings there are not too many loot either. Its better to farm central Cherno than even go there, especially because there are much more zombies there than in Cherno.

Actually normal buildings and barns are so useless now. The only places that are worth looking into are small shops and supermarkets in cities and airports, rest of the buildings spawn just food, clothing and maybe some medicament stuff.

I'm talking about the jail, the hospital, the offices, the ridiculous amount of grocery stores in north Cherno. Zombies are easy to kill/avoid. It's players I'm worried about. That's why it's not preferable to go into actual Cherno. Usually picked clean anyway...

How persistent are objects in this game? Couldn't one have a cache of goods hidden somewhere? Or does it despawn after you log out or something?

so, I played for around an hour with a friend earlier

we were mostly just running around, finding absolutely nothing anywhere and pretty much starving the whole time. a few sporadic encounters with other players, but in the end we spent 99% of our time as plain-clothed aimless runners

anyone have any advice for making 'progress'

I'm sure other people have noticed this, but the one castle (I don't know its name) is glitched. It seems like it is hovering a foot off of the ground. The loot can't be accessed and you need to jump to get into the building, and even then sometimes you'll clip through the floor and won't be able to go up the stairs.

What is this gamma trick being mentioned?

And I guess I understand the OT title now. Started in Balota, got a ton of food and headed up to Stary hoping to get some weapons. Spent some time looking around for the military barracks and couldn't find them because well.. they aren't there anymore! /cries. So I head west to the military base, get some desynch and get shot in the face by one of the other 3 people in the server. I was even holding my hands up too :(.

Do you guys have any tips for fighting zombies efficiently with melee weapons? Seems every time I meet one we trade blows, no matter how I approach them. By the time I got to the Mil base west of Stary my vision had turned grey and blurry. Also cab you apply saline to yourself? I know blood bags need another person.

Head north plain and simple :)

Keep circle strafing and they can't hit you. Completely negates any sort of threat from zombies. =/

So an IRL friend of mine just got the game, but both the 'friends' column and 'friends' tab aren't showing anything for the server he's on.

We also aren't sure how to even get the server information for the server you're currently playing on. I checked all the controls and tried hitting all the normal keys on the keyboard but didn't see anything.

I literally have found about eight 5.56 magazines and every one was empty. I'm totally kitted out EXCEPT I only have 20 rounds of 5.56. I found so many rounds of 7.62 but it seems that 5.56 is so rare...

The easiest way I've been doing it is that when your friend is in game, go to the steam overlay and choose join game. If it doesn't work, it will pop up an option with an IP address. You can then use the remote host instead to connect with the IP address.

It would disappear on server restart right now. You could do this once tents or whatever are implemented though.

I assumed that, but how often do servers restart?? I realize it probably depends on the server, but I have no idea. Days? Weeks?

Or maybe in the short-term, if you're about to go into a city, leave a bunch of stuff hidden in the woods before you go looting, in case you're jumped.

I think the average for servers is 4 hours.
