The real question is: Is it a usurper or the rightful king?

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This means

3DS > 530,000
PS4 - 530,000
Xbox 360 - 528,000

Unfortunately, we don't have a ballpark for 3DS sales. MCV just says they've been "strong", but...probably, mistery will be solved in the next Nintendo Investor Meeting, now that I think about it.

PS4 is going to do rather well on these shores, I reckon.

Yup. Week in, week out, it's the same first party titles in the 3DS top 10 with the occasional 3rd party guest star taking up one slot. It's quite strange, yet makes some kind of sense.

not so strange to me, if you think at the target demographic/age/consumer of the 3DS and at the actual 3DS games developed/presented in the west, isn't it?

btw on topic I repeat: great Sony results so far with the console! :)

Glad to see Xbox 360 still enjoyed nearly half million units sold in UK in 2013. And the most importance is Xbox360 finally became the 2nd best selling console ever in UK history just behind PS2.

Good job, team Xbox~!

Strange ? Not really, every big major release is on home consoles. Not too mention that there is way more marketing, sales-promotion, bomba sales etc. for console games.
The degree to which 3DS titles don't trouble the charts is indeed strange. Take this week for example. Two titles in the top 40, Animal Crossing at 38 and Pokemon at 39. Best selling platform in the country. 2 titles in the top 40. Right at the arse end.

I think it's because the 3DS is predominantly purchased for little 'uns that don't get new games outside of xmas and birthdays. Bravely Default didn't even make the 3DS specific top 10 after the first week IIRC.

Why shouldn't we?

X360 = sales of 12 months
PS4 = sales of what? 3 months max?

Impressive, period!

Seriously? The 360 has been out since 2005. It's been around 7 to 8 years on the market. How does that make it even remotely comparable to a hot new product that has just come out?

Wow. Hard to believe the Xbox brand has fallen in the UK. That price is going to murder the One over there.

Cheaper, incredibly big games library, promotion from retail, bundles, etc. Yes, its very impressive for a supply constrained console, tahts more expensive than current gen and basically a handful of games.

actually, there have been various 3DS games on the charts, more outside the Holidays than during the Holidays, so I don't know about that.
Wasn't so unusual to see 6-7 games on the top40 charts during the year, even in higher positions.
BD didn't chart, while Project X zone did, for example IIRC :p

A usurper of sorts. Nintendo died on the toilet.

Now Sony and Microsoft battle for the right to succession.

don't recall Nintendo ever being the King in the UK, except maybe NES, I don't know.

Even the SNES was toppled by the Mega Drive (genesis) in the UK.

I think people are reading into this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

New highly anticipated hardware outselling an 8 year old console. Quite impressive.

As you probably already know, during generational shifts, previous generation consoles usually outsell new systems during their launch because:

1) Old systems are at mass market price points by then
1)New systems sales are usually limited by production

That Sony solved both of these problems enough to beat YTD sales of a last gen console in just A MONTH AND A HALF shows just how much sony has their shit together these days....

IMO, the next gen console war is already over

It's comparable because they're both video game systems. The 360 had an entire year on the market and was cheaper; the PS4 had a month and was more expensive.

It's ok to be impressed.

Do you feel it has had an appropriate chart presence for the number one platform in the country?

Regardless, we've seen the numbers (thanks to jvm!) and 3DS software numbers are lower than PC retail software, never mind the consoles.

So why not more XBO than 360 on UK? or even US?
It's a hot new product

So 3DS is the best selling gaming device of 2013 in UK. Jesus, what games did 3DS gamers purchase in the past year? The weekly GFK charts didn't tell me this.

I only remember Luigi Mansion 2...

Xbox 360 sold a lot more than the PS3 in the UK. Now it looks like the PS4 will be more popular than the Xbox One there.

Dont want to be the smartass here, but PS3 is pretty close in the UK. The gap is not as big as many think., its actually pretty close.

Normally the transition is slower than this, because it's the hot New item versus the extremely cheap system with a huge library and no backwards compatibility for either to capitalise on.

Really surprised 3DS is actually the number one platform for the year. I guess for handhelds third party support doesn't really matter nearly as much.

PS4 will dominate this year though. The hype for the console at the moment here is unreal. Still in hot demand (which still outstrips supply) despite those impressive sales already.

PC games have much, much, much lower averge pricse compared to 3DS games...so much that

That's the reason. Games prices are too high + UK being extremely price sensitive = just so-so software sales.

This is pretty amazing. I wonder if MS thought this would be an easy win for them? I hope they really try to bring it this generation to help push them toward what made the 360 so successful. It seems Sony has learned alot from last gen. Listening is key.

Did you know, that the Xbox 360 was the fastest selling console named the Xbox 360 in 2013?

#Majornelsonfuntruthfact69

Did you know, that in 2013, Microsoft sold more Xbox 360's than PS3's and PS4's combined?*

*Microsoft© do not sell Playstations

I am pretty sure he means the LTD sales of X360/PS3.

X360 already topped Wii in UK and became the 2nd best selling home console ever in UK followed by Wii.

What is this from??

Awesome Japanese show Garo. Its like power-rangers, but aimed for adults. Dark themes, nudity, one warrior vs monsters, no elaborate and long transformation sequences, and AWESOME hand to hand combat from the entire cast.

I was one of them! That's crazy numbers, man. They outsold the whole Xbox 360 sales for the year in a matter a weeks :-O. Sony has created a juggernaut and I couldn't be happier for them. For the players indeed.

They aren't even 'so-so' though. Barely a seventh of the revenue that the 360 is pulling in even though 360 had to face a next gen launch and the 3DS hardware outsold it by (seemingly) a good margin.

Well, both PS4 and PSV belong to Playstation family. How come gamers are so eager to have PS4, but ignore PSV considering both are the most powerful machine in their category?

PSV really deserves much better sales...

It's more like a matter of days true stock availability vs a whole year and GTA V release giving an extra bump earlier in the year.
