Maturity, bitches.
So are we going to split into two group; those who have been mentioned outside of GAF and those who haven't?

I denoted which characters on my roster are hidden, because why not.

Looks fine but I don't agree with Lucas and Ike being locked considering there has never been a precedent for having to unlock those two before. With the exception of Ness and Captain Falcon being available from the start in Melee, typically an unlockable character remained unlockable and a starting character remained in the starting roster.

Every trailer but Mega Man's has involved varying degrees of misdirection, and from the pictures we've had at least "does this lighting suggest a Galaxy stage?" (yes, answered weeks later), "is Ridley a stage hazard?" (unresolved), and more recently "what's up with the Phantom?" (dunno). Hinting at a character through a innocuous stage reveal is absolutely within this game's M.O.

I wouldn't count three things out of dozens "practically all teasing."

Anyway, whether Little Mac is in or not, the boxing/wrestling ring is some S-tier trolling.

As I have said before, I'm skeptical that it's actually a punch-out stage, in contrast to many here who find it a foregone conclusion. I just don't like to see GAFers' hearts broken.

I wouldn't be surprised if Luigi is an unlockable again, as per tradition.
Barring guest characters (who have to be announced prior to release for obvious reasons), there isn't any sense in revealing a hidden character a full year before the game comes out and continuing to feature that character in pics of the day and gameplay footage.

I gotta say, I would be pretty darn disappointed if that was the actual final roster. The best part about Smash is seeing brand new franchises get repped and playable, and your roster has... Pac-Man and Takamaru. I would be bummed.

Good thing I am 99% positive that the actual roster will include Little Mac, Mii, and Pac-Man at the very least.

Didn't they state in the direct that Luigi appeared in that he is always hidden, but decided to show him anyway cause Year of Luigi? I don't remember exactly, but it was something among those lines.

Melee - Fire Emblem, Ice Climber, Game & Watch
Brawl - WarioWare, Pikmin, Kid Icarus, R.O.B., Metal Gear, Sonic
SSB4 (my roster) - Animal Crossing, Wii Fit, The Mysterious Murasame Castle, Mega Man, Pac-Man

While I don't doubt my list of characters will differ from the actual roster, I don't think the amount of new franchises represented is too off base.

No Offense but I really hope that you are wrong about amount of franchises being represented.

We've all just accepted Pac Man as a disappointing inevitability based off of that one guys pre E3 prediction list and to a lesser extent Namco's involvement with this game and are now doing our best to rationalise his addition because he's iconic or something and maybe he can eat people.

Only half joking.

Pac-Man is gonna be in inevitably: he's one of the most iconic video game characters ever, Namco is working with Sakurai on Smash Bros. so he would be easy to get the rights for, and he has crossed over with Nintendo on several occasions already. The possible leak was only icing on the cake.

Now if it were up to me, I would have Namco's rep be The Prince, but we can safely say that will never happen so...

Melee introduced Game & Watch, Ice Climbers and Fire Emblem to Smash (3).
Brawl introduced Pikmin, Wario, ROB, Kid Icarus, Metal Gear and Sonic (6).
U/3DS has introduced Animal Crossing, Wii Fit and Mega Man so far (3).

I feel that we'll only get 3 new franchises with a playable character. I know there's no precedent (unless you want to believe that we'll get 9 new franchises to make a pattern) but 6 new franchises sounds about right. Not easy to guess though.

There's gotta be more than three new franchises. That seems too low to me and I doubt we would've known all three of the new franchises represented from day 1 anyways.

I can think of a few franchises that haven't been represented yet that could potentially get in. Pac Man, Takamaru, Xenoblade, Chibi Robo, Rhythm Heaven, etc etc

I don't, just because it's obviously going to be arms and legs Pac-Man. I only like classic Pac-Man.
Pac-Man always had arms and legs.

I don't understand why Pac-Man is the one game where people assume the original sprite is how the artists wanted the character to look. Are Mario and Donkey Kong's 8-bit sprites indicative of their intended appearance? Of course not. There were a ton of technical limitations in the early '80s.

Just take a look at some of the official Pac-Man artwork from the '80s:

Maybe he's only familiar with this verson:

I think they used that look for Pac-Man Cabinets in the States. He looks like an adorable, yellow booger.

Out of anyone Namco could use, Pac-Man would be the best.

He's iconic and one of the grand daddy's of gaming.

Plus I would love to have him just to see a final smash where he goes classic version and you can chase the others down and eat them, leaving just their eyes behind.

Pac-Man with limbs is classic Pac-Man.
Well regardless, Pac-Man with limbs is pretty horrendous and always has been. Character design wise he's no Mario or Sonic that's for sure. He's not even charmingly simplistic like Kirby or Jigglypuff. I've just never been a fan of it.

I can practically guarantee there’s going to be an event match where food falls from the sky at a rapid pace and you have to use Wario to out eat Pac-Man within a time limit.
