As an aside, the series info page on the collection's site mentions that the series has now sold over 4.9 million copies worldwide.

Are the English language options in the Japanese DS games the English localizations, or are they straight translations of the Japanese?

They're the normal English localizations. I bought the Japanese version of AA2 since I didn't feel like waiting a few months for the English version, and when that came out, I picked that up and there were no major differences.

IIRC, they were the english localizations, albeit with more spelling and grammatical errors.

Well then I'll ask the obvious follow-up question: why wouldn't Capcom release this game in at least English speaking markets, then, aside from the obligatory "lol Capcpom" reason? If it were eShop only, it seems like the job will have already been done for them. I would imagine then that it'll be a safe bet that it's released internationally, but who knows with Capcom?

This is obviously a rough approximation with fuzzy math... however!

As of September 2013, the series enjoyed total sales of 4.4 million. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies released in October 2013 in the U.S. and PAL. The new number makes for around 500,000 sales of AA5 in the west.

Obviously, that's not 100% correct because the old games are still selling small amounts. Also AA5 is still selling in Japan (it was released in Japan in July 2013), although I'm not sure how frontloaded retail sales are in Japan.

Maybe Capcom can release this on the western eShops like they did on iOS: first two cases of AA1 are free and everything else is an in-game purchase.

Better than nothing. If it's priced the same as the iOS game was it would probably be cheaper than a full release too.
at least do a limited print run, Capcom ;_;

An international release seems like a no brainer, even for Capcom. The main question is whether or not it'll now be released physically in international markets.

I'd say it was evident from my post that I didn't feel it was bad looking.

It's cool though, you don't have to like it. I just found that dudes post a bit weird. Of course the 3DS version won't look like the iOS version. For better or worse, it couldn't.

Sorry if I wasn't specific enough. I was referring to the sprites, not the resolution (doh). The ones on iOS looked shitty to me. But if you liked them then good for you... I guess. :p

Do you have a source for the 4.4 million in September '13? According to Capcom's official sales data, the series had sold 4.9 million as of September '13, meaning DD's English release sold <100k (which sadly is much more likely.) (And yes, this also means that number above wasn't really news after all, my bad.)

Is that including iOS sales? Keep in mind the trilogy was on special during that time period. And the Ace Attorney games do seem to have legs in Japan. Also I don't think any of the old games got even close to 500k sales in the West, but honestly anything over 100k is probably a success. EDIT: And GSR appears to have debunked your numbers.

Arg, I read it wrong. The 4.4 million was as of June 2013, but was on their financial reports on September 28, 2013. I used the Wayback Machine to get an old snapshot of their Total Sales Units Data.

Honestly, I think it's more likely that the 4.9 million number is outdated and they're presenting it to the public as "new".

To me, after watching the trailer, it looks like the definitive version of the games. We can only hope for it to come to the States.

And "Naruhodo" is the Japanese name for Phoenix, wright?
im sorry

Makes me think we'll get an Apollo or Investigations selection or something after this. (not that there would be much to an Apollo selection :p)

This is the first batch, the second will be AA4, AAI, and AAI2 (lol yeah right), and the third will eventually be AA5-7. Then, the whole thing will be bundled together, complete with playable Judge.

I got the iOS trilogy as my introduction to the series. I'm up until case 3-2... Then have to move on to AJ and AA5. Even with all of that still on my plate...

Psst.... Hey... Capcom US... I want this... ASAP! (and not delayed a ton of times!)

Seriously, with AA5 on the eShop right now, it makes no sense to not release AA1-3 (and maybe AJ as well?) on the eShop.
Let's face it, any physical release ain't gonna happen without a miracle.

EDIT: I also REALLY want a variant of the cover art to use as my phone background. Holy carp is that thing epic! O_O

Imagine this being released stateside in a limited edition run along with physical AA5, both games and some goodies for $100, make it happen Capcpom! Please! I might even forgive you for all the pain you've caused.

Looks like a well-done version of the iOS port. Hopefully Capcom localizes it sometime soon.
I'm sure the presentation, text, and music will be a ton better than the butchered iOS version, but I hope the artwork is better than that one. The trailer make it seem like it's using the same artwork as the iOS version, but I hope they tweaked it a bit for the better. For example, in the sprite version, there's a great little detail when Ben is talking as Trilo: his lips still move a little, but this is completely absent on the iOS version. Stuff like that is great to see in the little character quirks, and I hope they don't lose that with this.

I'm a little worried, because in the trailer you can see a few bits of the iOS version's jank (Angel's missing a frame of her "giving lunch" animation, Franziska's whip and Godot's hand-throw seem a bit fast), but I guess we'll find out.

I would actually be interested if they provided remixed music, especially if they provided the original music as an option alongside like Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Just for fun.

You may want to ask a few girls about this, because you have a few misconceptions about the female body. For one, just because people are sisters does not remotely mean they'll have the same body type.

oh. well yeah never did pay attention in biology class >_>

still tho Maya's a shrimp. Mia's like a whale in comparison.

Here's the full version of the cover artwork:

Man that just reminds me how much I want Franziska, Maya, Gumshoe, Larry and Gadot back. Fullbright was nowhere near as memorable as Gumshoe.

Also, that boxart is smexy as hell. Capcom, give me that. I've given you money for the iOS versions twice! Once for the original and again for the trilogy. I re-bought all the original DS games and got DD on release.

I deserve this.

Love that Turnabout Sisters theme at the end of the trailer. But when it comes to the cover, why is Mia omitted from the official cover? Mia plays an integral role in the AA storyline.
I would get this on day 1 but the chances of this making it to the west are along the lines of AAI2.
