I look at a game like Ryse and graphically it seems the xbone can do some good stuff, and will only get better. Maybe I'm being too optimistic though? I really thought both consoles could pull TR off without a hitch. Surely the xbone can do better?

XB1 will have great graphical games. just not as good as ps4.

Until Bungie left and 343 took over. Is it not?

yeah.. since when has halo not been used, along with gears, as examples of graphically intense games for microsoft? Many folks have been banned debating Halo's visuals, id imagine. Shame, they didn't know that allegedly, no one cares about halo's graphics, and its not a standout.

I agree, but the difference is one platform is going to have the better version of every multiplat coming down the pike...and the other is the Xbox One. The One really was purchased only (a) for exclusives and (b) to play multiplayer games with my little brother who has a One only. But until those exclusives show up, it's just this large sum of money that was spent and isn't doing anything for me except turning my direcTV channels...admittedly quite handy, but not something I'd spend $500 on. I just...idk. I just want to see some more videos of some upcoming releases to cool my nerves.

Eh, probably not. It's a fine box. I just need some exclusives to make me feel better about picking it up. I got it on Sunday after putting it off for the last month.

yep. I think MS will drive home the point that it needs to be 1080p/60 to 343...but I'm pretty sure they already know it. It's not like the box can't do 1080p/60; it's just that developers aren't making the necessary concessions it may need at this stage in tools and engine development to hit 1080p/60. Scale some shit back if necessary, but hit 1080p/60, 343.
Well again it comes down to you really. If you want the satisfaction of knowing you're playing the best version then more power to you. If the worst that's gonna happen this new generation is a frame rate different between the ps4 and X1 but neither go below 30 fps then you really can't go wrong with either. As much as someone may want to suggest otherwise. Since you already have an X1 just hang on to it until either has exclusives worth the cost of admission. It's not like the X1 is going to depreciate is value under 400$ anytime soon.

So far its been met on games I care about

Ill see when more games cone out if its that bigger deal, like infamous/DC/planetside/yhe order
True. I'm eager to see how Destiny runs. It looks good, but it doesn't blow me away. Of course, the scale does appear to be much larger than Tomb Raider, so I'm betting on 30 FPS.

It was just a hypothesis, I don't work in the industry, either.

I dunno, it's worked for Call of Duty. They've gotten away with reusing the same engine for 11 years, because "Hey, it runs at 60fps and you love it!".
I think with COD it was definitely a conscious decision to stick with a dated engine in favor of 60FPS. That's a special case where the gameplay is addicting enough that the fanbase will ignore the bland visuals (and were they ever). I don't know what it cost to develop the past few CODs, but suspect their marketing budget is quite large, given all the commercials we've seen these past few iterations. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd Google to see where COD sits among its big-name peers for development budgets.

I wonder how much if a difference in IQ and effects it would have been with both being at 30fps but the remaining power on ps4 was for the iq and effects

Amazon will.

Yeah I know. I was (sort of) joking, anyways.

I can still return mine, but hey...I bought it for the exclusives. They need to start showing up, though. I'm getting antsy.

I also bought it for the exclusives. Bought XB1 over PS4 even though I knew PS4 would have the better multiplats but I didn't wanna miss out on Killer Instinct. Although I really like KI, I'm just not enjoying it as much as I should using the control pad, and I'm not dishing out $200 for a new stick just to play it.

Someone will, probably not for the price you would want though. I'm thinking you'll get $300-$350 for it. Or you could sell it for $399 and hope the prospective buyer is completely ignorant on what a PS4 is.

Yeah I'd want close to full price if I were to sell it, though I know that's just wishful thinking, and I made the mistake of going all digital. Can't resell the games I bought so far lol. I have a Day One Edition too, although that's quite irrelevant at this point.

Really? I have both systems and have no intention of selling my xbone. It's gonna have some crazy good exclusives in the future.

If I were serious about selling my XB1 I could (and eventually would) rebuy it later. That, I'm certain of. I think if it weren't for Titanfall coming out in 2 months, I would consider selling. I've mention many times that Tomb Raider is my GOTY for 2013. It'll be nice to have the best version of the game now.

How can they really know this so far in advance. Unless they mean "we will do 60fps no matter what resolution we have to use?"

I'm not sure. I think that this will be the most likely dev to hit 1080p @60 FPS, since they are a MS dev. It's not like having 1080p & 60 FPS on Xbox can't be done, it's just not as easy as PS4.

The update states it goes higher than 30 FPS sometimes reaching 45 FPS. Stated the average of the Xbox One version to be above 30 FPS.

Both versions will be better than last gen TR obviously; PS4 TR can reach 60 FPS though.

Where is this update that says it can hit 45 frames? I think I missed it somewhere in this thread.

I guess, to me, 1080p and 60fps is only part of the equation. If I say that Limbo runs at 1080fps and 60fps everyone would be unimpressed. I guess I have a more wait and see approach to such early promises without even seeing an engine those numbers alone don't really impress me.

I think halo 4 will uses a tiled or clustered forward renderer to escape some ESRAM problems. Still have no idea how that could get them to 1080p 60 though.

Curious....

to be on topic...

I am once again not very surprised and I look forward to the DF comparison.

doubt that since they already confirmed Halo5 will be 60fps. Interestingly enough they've said nothing about the resolution yet about that game, or hell, any of their upcoming exclusives

Ah I see. It might end up being 900p or at worst 720p.

Honestly I think I'm ok with 900p/60. Of course like everyone else, I'd love for every single game on the planet to be 1080p/60, but it's just not going to happen (on either console)

It's curious. Almost always framerate is the last aspect that is finalized in my limited experience. Setting the bar at this point might be a bad move in the long run but who knows? 343 are very competent devs graphically

There are limitations on it though. Moreso than on the PS4. For instance why isn't there AA solutions on Forza 5 or NBA2K14 on XB1?

Any game under the sun can get to 1080p x 60fps

Halo will 100% be 1080p x 60fps. Will it look amazing? Probably not compared to Uncharted and such. Like Forza 5 vs. DriveClub.

I wouldn't guarantee the resolution just yet. Ryse was fine being 900p so I could see them go that route

Pretty much. 343i is more style over substance - at least with Halo 4. Let's hope they have gotten the message that Halo needs to stay Halo and we don't want CoD, Metroid Prime, ... to influence it in a way that hurts the series. But I think this thread is about Tomb Raider - The definitely not gonna buy on X1 Edition. Also unlocked frame rates? is that now becoming a thing? Unlocked frame rates are the worst. Lock at 30 and add decent motion blur.

I've followed Halo closely, it's probably my favorite game series. They have hired 5 former Halo professionals to work at 343. They all know what makes a good Halo game. So they have no excuse to make another bad game.

But surely halo can get to 1080p - 60fps

Surely??

Any game this gen (or last) can run at 1080p/60. It just means compromises to achieve it. I would much rather have a 720p/60 Halo than a cut down 1080p/60 version.

From the moment they committed to the Xbone's hardware design, MS knew that 1080p/60 was not feasible on their console for the proper next gen games. It's too late int he day for them to start pushing it on game, especially on ones well into development like Halo 5.

Bioshock games on previous gens had unlocked frame rates and were awful. I would rather have a locked framerate at 30 than a constant change.

I disagree, after seeing the option in Bioshock I wish more games allowed for it on console. I couldn't go back to locked after seeing how much better it was running at all times.

Depend on how unlocked you're talking about.

Few non-Nintendo console games have a 100% locked framerate. Dips here and there are OK, but stuff like the horrific unlocked mode in Bioshock or the various 360 Lego games are another matter entirely.

Love your use of 'above' there. A whole 5 frames...maybe. Haha

The Update says majority of time on XBone is played at around 30 frames, and PS4 is played most times at 60.... No need to read more into it with your green tinted glasses.

If you know the industry at all and this whole thing has taught you anything, you'll know that when they say it can hit 45 but usually runs at 30...that probably means that it will hit 45 in a cave, while staring at a wall.

Nice piece by Jason Schreier on why the technical details in videogames matter.

A direct response to that article on Vice that stated it didn't matter,

The article on Vice doesn't really say it doesn't matter, just that there are bigger issues people should be talking about instead of focusing just on technical details. Warring over which version of CoD is better instead of asking why we're still being fed the same game over and over is one example given.

That people narrowed it down to just being 'tech specs don't matter' and utterly ignored the larger criticism is pretty much entirely the point of the article.
