1UP MGS4 Hands on preview (he splurged)

Like a mummy huh? I don't think so. Sam looked considerably older in the first 2 Splinter Cells, he doesn't even have gray hair anymore.

Well Splinter Cell art never is consistent. In some pictures he looks 20's and in some older, but in-game he clearly is older than Snake in SoL.

But in Double Agent they seemed to smoothen him up a bit. Probably because it had so many daylight missions :lol

Come on, Sam Fisher was always the "argh too old for this shit" type of character. He's from the Hi Fi era people.

I laughed at that conversation :)

I like the sound of the flash back game for points, and MKII action. Also the multiple paths, I'm going to get so lost in all of this. That's it, MGS3 time.

Flashback games for points? What??

Take, for example, the game's wild new "flashback" minigame. Every time Snake encounters some character, place, object, or situation from his past, you can jam on the X button to uncover additional memories (illustrated via images from the past games). It's purely optional, but surprisingly fun and challenging (and worthwhile, since doing so nets you bonus Drebin points).

.

Oh man, I'm now more excited for MGS4 than GTA4. I know some may think I'm being a tool because MGS4 is the one that's not multiplat but for me with GTA I'll go wild, do crazy mindless stuff, but with MGS4 I'm going to really sink my teeth in and get cavities. Ok it's also because of the fact that MGS4 will have strong ties to past MGS games, as GTA can is all new and no ties at all. I need to warp to MGS4's launch darnit.

Edit: Why did I pick GTA4 and not GT5, or Resistance2? Because GTAs were the most played games on ps2 for me, FF, GT, and MGS2/3 being runner ups. There's always time for mayhem in GTA.
PLOID!?? Did you disappear or something?

I really don't remember anything about you, only that you exist. I saw "Ploid" and it jutted out as if I should remember it. Then I thought... Ploid 2.0... that sounds more familiar.... could it be!?

That flashback game is the ultimate fan service. But I wonder why Shane calls it "challenging". I suppose there's a small window of opportunity to hit the button (IGN says a prompt for either L1 or X will appear) to activate them. So, it is essentially a single button QTE?

He was after he found out he was Solid Snake, before then he was negative towards Pliskin on multiple occasions (not all directly). The fact he 'changed his tune' the second he found it who he really was just went to make him look like an idiot.

Uh, no he was defending Snake way before he found out about Plisken being Snake. And seriously, you can't be serious about Raiden being arrogant? I don't remember a single codec call where he was insulting Plisken. (And no the codec call with Rose doesn't count! It was just a GF/BF thing, some guys tend to get jealous when their girls praise other guys.)

The only game that Ryan has mentioned as an influence for MGS4 is Gears of War, mainly for the controls.
Pretty sure I read that GoW gameplay was partly inspired by RE4, particularly in the way that MGS4 was inspired by GoW. So, yeah.

And I haven't read much about Drebin and the shop system, but am I wrong in thinking it's similar to this gentleman:

We spent our days soldiering through the game at Konami's onsite office (imagine: a Bond villain's lair crossed with a Zen garden, stocked with an endless supply of canned coffee and whipped cream sandwiches)
WTF?

Probably, we won't know till we've actually played it.

I'm not convinced by Drebin Points yet, I think they should've had a regular currency system. Why would Drebin give you weapons, essentially for free?

... How come only three sites have put up previews, if 16 people went?

It's really difficult to resist reading that preview. What does he say about the overall quality of the game? I'd prefer to have none of MGS4 spoiled for me before I play it.

Can't wait to hear Shane's impressions on this week's 1UP Yours :D :D :D
Indeed, I hope there is a nice long discussion on it and they don't cut it off early like most PS3/Wii discussions

It's everything you hope it is

The others are still in a state of shock. With a fresh coat of white paint on their walls.

Not really. Shane only discusses what we've pretty much seen in gameplay videos and discusses a bit of the portion we saw in pics today.

Personally I'm shocked that they let so many journalists play the game this early. Historical event in the gaming industry. I mean, obviously there has been cases where someone was reviewing a game that got delayed..etc but inviting so many for a ultimate set up and let them play through the whole thing months ahead... not just another title at that, one of the absolute biggest games of the year/generation... It's kinda unprecedented.

'We spared no expense'

Metal Gear 'going out' with a bang indeed.
I can imagine this staying a highpoint of their journalistic career for many of the participants.

It's risky because it could work against a game. Many games are reviewed in the hype of the moment, scores get inflated and two months down the line a reviewer might look at the review and feel differently. That's where these guys will be two months down the line, presuming they're reviewing it too

hmm, yeah high chances of that happening.

I'm assuming that they are letting the journalists get their hands on the game this early so they can make final touches as the game heads into release.

So basically, things that worked / didn't work for the journalists would probably be fixed in the final game leading to a higher review score.

I'm already 'nostalgic' towards Uncharted for example.
I think three months is good amount of time for people to get over it and gain interest again.

Then they will get to replay the final version for review which is slightly enhanced here and there, they are comfortable with the gameplay and challenges already and really just soak it all in more thoroughly.

It could go one way or another though. For example 3 months later reviewers might have thought a lot more harshly of the camera in MGS3 and reviews could've gone down. Though I don't think MGS4 will have any sort of gameplay faults like that, and a lot of that is spurred by public opinion

Though at the same time you make a good point about nostalgia, and having time to appreciate the game. MGS4 might be so amazing that letting it all sink in will leave an even better impression. In some ways, that's what made Subsistence's scores so high (once they fixed the camera).

Lucky guys... got to complete it before anyone else.
I would hate it. Playing MGS4 and not being able to talk about it at all for 3 months would send me crazy

I'd say the benefit is that you get to play it without having to worry about it being spoiled. The downside is that to play all the way through it you'd have to rush, and that's something I definitely wouldn't want to do. Especially with all the talk about how it being more open now.

Not to mention that this is still an unfinished version of the game, with some framerate drops that will probably be fixed in the final version, bugs and so on.

They also mentioned that they weren't allowed to see some of the things of the game.

Also, I'm glad to hear the music is good. I was getting worried since they haven't really shown any music from the game since 2006, and Hibino isn't working on this one

I'm finally starting to get excited for this game again. I got so bored from seeing the same area over and over but now that it's close the excitement is back. I'll be getting the 80GB PS3/MGS4 bundle on day one.

Without giving away too much more, I'll say that all of these factors coalesce to form one of Act 1's most compelling segments -- a tense indoor battle alongside Rat Patrol against the Haven troopers (aka "frogs"), elite female warriors with enhanced agility and high-powered weaponry. If you're accustomed to MGS enemies offering little in the way of A.I. surprises, these ladies will leap, flank, and grenade you to oblivion. You'll certainly have to master some new tactics to deal with this menace, but they're far from being considered "bosses." When the game's ready to start throwing actual bosses at you, you'll be floored.

:O

Heh I didn't catch the part about the bosses, I mostly just scanned over the preview. A lot of people were upset when the Beauty and the Beast unit were unveiled because they look really bizarre for a MGS game (whatever that means). But if you just look at how they moved in that trailer you could tell they're going to be awesome.

Yeah I agree. Screaming Mantis is going to be my favorite boss EVER! I can't waaaiiiittt. :D

I have no doubt that Harry Gregson-Williams' music for the cinematic will be outstanding, but I'm really worried about the in-game music. We've heard very little of it, but so far I find it very disappointing.

We really haven't heard any of the ingame music. I like the stuff we have heard though from Nobuko Toda. He made the E3 2006 music I believe, and also the music in the TGS 2006 trailer which I really like. But otherwise we haven't really seen any music from the game. He composed the MGS4 'Love theme' for SSBB as well which is one of the best songs on that whole soundtrack, but not really fitting of MGS4. I still have my reservations though

He wrote Calling to the Night too.

Well, we've heard the music that sounds during the alert status on the Middle East chapter. You can hear it in many of the countless videos that were recorded from the old demos.

Also, wasn't "Old Snake" done by Harry Gregson-Williams?

I didn't know that the composer for the in-game music was the same one that wrote Calling to the Night, though. That song was probably one of the few great things about PO.

yeah, Calling into the Night was Epicness.

Also, "The best is yet to come" from MGS1 was the best MGS song ever. Dare to disagree.
