1UP MGS4 Hands on preview (he splurged)

We really haven't heard any of the ingame music. I like the stuff we have heard though from Nobuko Toda. He made the E3 2006 music I believe, and also the music in the TGS 2006 trailer which I really like. But otherwise we haven't really seen any music from the game. He composed the MGS4 'Love theme' for SSBB as well which is one of the best songs on that whole soundtrack, but not really fitting of MGS4. I still have my reservations though

He wrote Calling to the Night too.

Waiting for a storm to rise....feel the isolation fleeting!

yeah, Calling into the Night was Epicness.

Also, "The best is yet to come" from MGS1 was the best MGS song ever. Dare to disagree.

+1

But I'm betting MGS4's (the one from the E3 06 trailer) will be even better :D

hmm, yeah imagine the Epic Win that will be "the next best is yet to come" <<< Good name for the song huh?

Well, we've heard the music that sounds during the alert status on the Middle East chapter. You can hear it in many of the countless videos that were recorded from the old demos.

Also, wasn't "Old Snake" done by Harry Gregson-Williams?

I didn't know that the composer for the in-game music was the same one that wrote Calling to the Night, though. That song was probably one of the few great things about PO.
Hmm I just watched some gameplay. I never even noticed that alert music... Not very intense like all the past alert music :\

And then there's the worries about the lack of the main theme :(

Well, I mean, it is Shane. He's a huge Metal Gear fanboy. The game could be an epic, steaming pile of shit and he'd still be giggling over it.

So far every preview I've read has been a bit giggly over the game. So I'm getting giggly myself. I mean, this IS Metal Gear, do we have any reason in the world to doubt that it won't be fantastically superb? Raiden may have been a gimp, but that game was still a great f'n game. This is snake, like John Wayne style, in HD, with a massive budget. Does it get better than that? I'm not sure.

Worry not, the main theme is in there. Not quite as prominent as it was in MGS2, but it's there.

This feels kinda weird cause this will be the first ever MGS game I will play other than Merry Gear Solid.
Merry Gear Solid really wouldn't be nearly as much fun without knowing all the MGS references in it! I don't see why you wouldn't play the first three main games before starting with this one.

I can't remember exact lines of dialogue, things like him moaning to Rose because she talks as if she fancies him. There is a fair amount in there. But it is before he finds out it's really Snake.

I don't know, I just played through MGS2 last week and I felt that Raiden was mostly kissing Snake's ass through the vast majority of the game referring to him in terms of being "legendary" and in heroic prose. When he was getting down on Snake, it was mainly because he was being fed bad information, which we all knew was false. So I can forgive him for that, his handlers were feeding him lies.

My problem with Raiden is that he's a really glam rock type of guy with feathered long pretty golden locks and he talks like a whiny little teenager. I didn't mind playing as him, but I really wanted to smack him up during cut scenes and particularly when he would go back and forth with Rose. He just sounded like he was whining about everything.

my pick for Snake.

Looks a lot like TGS 06 Snake.

Kojima said in a Q&A session during GC 06 that the main theme would be in the game. But after so much time, who knows.

wat

You mean you're one of the guys that have finished the game?

The "main theme" was in the 20th Anniversary Soundtrack too, except it didn't have the main chorus. It wasn't in SSBB at all either

I hope they're just baiting us along cause they know we think it's not in there

Yeah, I really can't wait for Gregson-Williams' new stuff for the game. I'm sure the theme will be in there - the MGS3 version was the best one so far even if it was only part of the OST.

Red Blaster said:
I don't understand this big fuss about the main theme. It was on the MGS3 soundtrack but it was never used in the actual game.
Yes it was. It was in the used in the opening cutscene and the closing cutscene (debriefing).

This game deserves a thesis, not a moment-by-moment walkthrough of what you'll be experiencing yourself come June 12. So if you're a MGS fan who's already sold on this game, I suggest avoiding any and all media that drops between now and its launch. The surprises it has in store for you simply shouldn't be spoiled. But if you're still teetering on the edge, wondering if MGS4 is truly worth it...keep reading.

I stopped reading there...

DAMN YOU SHANE!! :(
Should i continue reading? :$

Well, I kind of regret it a little, that I read the preview. Why? Because now I know when I will be seeing curtain characters at what point in the game etc.

I think we can all surmise that this was the stuff Shane saw a few weeks ago in Japan that he couldn't previously talk about - maybe some other Konami stuff but considering how intense this event sounds like it was, I doubt there was time to do so.

Does this preview contain anything new compared to the IGN preview? If not, I may read it!

I'm not sure but I didn't read the IGN review. I don't trust IGN to not spoil anything.

If you listen to the Kojima podcast regularly, there are no spoilers in this preview you haven't heard before, I'd wager.

Thanks bro, now I know I'm not reading it :)

Nicely written preview.

Goddamn, hype on this game for me is through the roof and I am grateful Shane did not spoil much of the first act. Love the concept of weapons upgrades and customization.

Between this write-up and the Solid Creed video, I'm frothing.

Can't believe this game is almost here!

yeah yeah, seen all these ages ago, even played the game.... sorry though, my opinion stands
Well, the hair on Drake and Elena is more technically impressive at least than any hair in MGS4 I've seen so far. Elena's hair modeling is really quite impressive (much more so than Meryl's hair for example, although Eva's hair looks really good too), and they use actual shader for hear texture instead of just alpha textures.

70 days.

Well.. if you're a die-hard hardcore Metal Gear Solid fan and want everything to come as a surprise at this last Kojima-MGS game, then it is spoilerific enough, if you don't wanna know, when you are going to meet the Haven Troopers, Rat Patrol and Meryl Silverburgh.

Honestly I'm not super worried about spoilers.
For all we know, it's all going to be just a big joke and the game is actually going to be set in space.

I can't shake the feeling that we're looking at a Best Game of All Time contender. Next gen starts when Hideo says so.

Seriously man I know what you mean.

I hate to keep bringing it up but the last time I got this excited about a game and then the moment to play it finally came and I thought man I am experiencing something I really didnt think possible was MGS2 and I am getting the exact same feeling from 4.

For me it was Resident Evil 4, but even so, it's been far too long.

I think a main theme you're expecting is not going to appear in this game. If you listen to the past songs they're pretty damn energetic. That doesn't fit the mood of MGS4 at all. Snake is about to die and has one last mission. Not exactly something fitting an uplifting score.

By simply watching the trailers so far you would already know that. Liquid Sun is the first act and we've already seen Meryl, Rat Patrol, and the FROGS in that location.

Do you rike it? ; )

Has Shane been running around the office talking about this as of late? I'd really like to hear how his "boot camp" experience was if he's allowed to talk.

That's because they beat the game.

Yeah, and it basically encourages there is no real point to keep looking into anymore media/preview/reviews, especially in regards to anymore possible spoilers looking at them. You buy this sweetness come launch day period!

You can just feel that the writers are just basically biting their tongues not saying anything more than the beginning of the game and that it's completely awesome, buy it.

This is all so delicious!

Pretty much. Now I just have to decide whether or not to buy a PS3 separate and then get MGS4 or to get the bundle. Someone council me. I want to get the controller with the rumble too, what's the name of it?
