A Montana pipeline burst sent as much as 50,400 gallons of oil gushing into the Yellowstone River, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency.

Residents in nearby cities were told not to drink the tap water, which some said smelled like diesel.

The massive oil spill happened when the 12-inch pipeline, which crosses the Yellowstone River, ruptured Saturday about 5 miles upstream from Glendive, Montana's Department of Environmental Quality said. The Bridger Pipeline company shut down the pipeline.

Glendive City Council member Gerald Reichert was among the residents who noticed a disturbing odor in the drinking water.

"Suddenly at our house there was a definite smell. It was a diesel smell," Reichert told the Grand Forks Herald.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock announced a state of emergency for Dawson and Richland counties.

And while officials wait for results from water sample testing, they're advising residents to use bottled water for drinking and cooking.

A host of agencies have responded to the oil spill, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Adding to the problems, the weather: the Yellowstone River is partially frozen, making it difficult to clean up the mess.

This isn't the first major oil spill into the Yellowstone River -- the longest undammed river in the United States.

In 2011, up to 42,000 gallons poured out of a ruptured Exxon Mobil pipeline.

Don't worry guys, The Keystone pipeline will never have these problems. We promise!

Keystone really does seem like the dumbest idea ever and I don't see why any person who is not on big oil's payroll would support it other than a petty desire to piss off liberals and environmentalists.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
And even if it does, Canada needs Keystone so I don't have to pay $79.99 for video games in the near future.

Congrats on coming up with the dumbest reason I've heard for the pipeline to exist. You have faced stiff competition.

Well excuseeeeeee me for not caring about oil spills on American soil so I can pay less for video games

Jesus christ, its not just "american soil." its human beings that can't drink water anymore. If it happens for KeystoneXL, it will be an entire nation wide industry that collapses. Making the inevitable simple invasion of Canada just that much closer.

Going to be hard enjoying those videya games when americans are living in your families home.

Think about it.

Heard about this on the radio this morning and raged quite a bit. I haven't been to Yellowstone yet, it is one of the top places on my list. And now 50,000+ gallons of diesel just went into a river and will probably seriously hurt the wildlife, plant and animal, that depend on the river. Thanks shit heads.

But no guys, putting a pipeline right across the main aquifer for 5 or 6 states is totally not risky at all! This will totally be good for America, people!*

*note: by people we don't mean you dirty poors that actually LIVE in those states.

Let me guess: An investigation will show that the pipeline wasn't monitored or serviced enough due to cost cutting by the company (gotta make every nickle you can!) and a lack of enforcement of "burdensome" regulations (if they even exist).

I wonder how Fox News will spin this.

"Terrorist Muslim attacks on our freedom"?

"Oil seeps naturally into our oceans and ecosystems and not one treehugger cares"

"You only "care" about the environment because of your socialist, communist liberal agenda against big oil"

FREEDOM!

Will Bridger Pipeline LLC be held liable for this? Will any executives go to jail?

(LOL)

Not that it really changes anything, but this is downstream of Yellowstone National Park.

I wonder how long it will be until I see crazy people actually suggest this was an inside job to turn the public against Keystone XL.

Human incompetence causes oil spill; humans are part of nature therefore this falls as a natural disaster, something which kills indiscriminately. Killing off pipeline akin to killing off volcanoes for erupting and causing death.
