arstechnica says "Mole: 80GB PS3 dead, 120-160GB with Dual Shock 3 incoming"

The first rumour sounds correct. The second set of specs sounds completely absurd.

Any new version will just see a new HDD slapped in there and a DS3. Later we might see a slim. They're not going to shove in a bunch of superfluous features and push costs back up.

These are so silly. What was wrong with 60gig? Couldn't they have just reduced it's price?

Glad I got one early and don't have to decide which console to get from a choice of a dozen.

Europe only had the 60 gb version, never the 80 gb. Atleast not here. (the Netherlands)

Yeah it's the same here in Sweden, can't find a 60GB anywhere nowdays.

I think Sony see europe as mission accomplished. One SKU, no BC, and selling well. I doubt Europe will ever see a new model with BC.

I really hope that's not the case, I know I'm not the only one here in Sweden complaining about the non existence of BC (anymore), as I've seen plenty of threads/articles discussing it with the release of the 40GB SKU.

the 80gb is gone from Europe? Seriously? I know the 60gb never went on sale there, but I thought the 80gb is still around?
Europe got your 80GB hardware but with a 60GB HDD. As in semi-software BC solution rather than full hardware.

The 60GB consoles are sold out since quite before Christmas, specially because they did a Starter Pack (console + 2 sixaxis + 2 games) for 499, so few people bought a 40GB rather than that. Problem is they were clearing the stock so right now its 40GB or bust.

At least SCEE should be announcing something today or tomorrow, because a few stores already spilled that a new Starter Pack is coming this week:

499€ for the 40GB PS3 + Ratchet + Uncharted + 2 SixAxis. Considering the normal 40GB PS3 + 1 SixAxis is 399, its a fair better deal. It'll be released this Wednesday-Thrusday...

I think you'll see a "premium" version. Sony have PlayTV coming down the pipe and 40Gb is pretty weak for a PVR. There is also the 360 Elite sitting there to be matched and I think it's no unreasonable they can slap a 120Gb drive into the 40Gb model, bundle a couple of trinkets (maybe even PlayTV) and stick a higher price on it.

Not a bad deal at all, still the absence of BC is hurting (yeah I know, nagnag), but if it's priced right over here, it could make one reconsider.
Also great choice of games included.

Well, either way they stated theyre "sticking with the 2 SKU model" so even if they're phasing out the 80GB PS3 another PS3 SKU is coming.

Id buy this 160GB PS3 if it has PS2 BC, if not then meh...

Why does it say "40gb" twice on the bottom right corner of the box in the first shot?

Great pack, but a new starter pack now should mean that the introduction of DS3 in Europe is still distant.

They pretty much authorise any first party published game if they have sufficient stock. If they only have the pack in units labeled not to be sold separately then you're out of luck.

All this don't matter. As long as I'm not getting a PS3 with full BC that's reasonably priced, I'm not biting. I don't care about hdd size whatsoever. That new starter pack is awesome, but I'm not getting any BC with it, so tough luck.

The rating type on Uncharted is also different from the game itself and on the box. The game on the box got UK (?) rating and the game itself got PEGI rating.

HMV in Ireland had an interesting deal - 40Gb PS3, 2 games, 2 blu ray discs and HDMI cable for €479. Game choices included R&C, Uncharted & Singstar (with microphones) and Motorstorm I think. Blu Ray discs were Casino Royale and Spiderman 3.

Blu Ray disc prices are a joke in Europe so the above is a very good deal.

arstechnica was the one that reported the new sku's that came out last year before others knew. You can bet Sony will go for 160GB. Sony needs to make the elite look low end and bad value.

Who needs that much hard drive space? Just lower the freaking price if RSX and Cell is now 65nm. I like how they go the "value" proposition route. To me value = $299 you morons.

I think $299 coming for NA this summer in 2 SKU fashion - like MotorStorm pack last year.

Coincides with E3 and timing is also right for final Blu-ray shutout in June with new BD-Live SALs also coming to market giving the CE green light.

Why would anyone need 2 HDMI outputs? And why would this INSIDAR mole confuse the Spider Man 40 GB pack-in with the Motorstorm 80 GB pack-in?

Looks fake to me. But I'm sure we'll get another SKU which hopefully will be launched along with a 100 dollar price drop.

i dont get the: 2x sixaxis thing. who needs two OLD pads without rumble anyway? even when you need one, the DS3 on the horizont and there arent many local multiplayergames out there.

I don't know but...

A) They want to offer the same value as the old Starter Pack which included 2 Sixaxis
B) They are trying to clear Sixaxis stock before pushing new SKUs with Dual Shock 3s
C) They are never going to put DS3 in the boxes and it'll always be an optional purchase

I hope its not C...

I dont see the big deal here. There are only really going to be 2 sku out there, everything else is just the left over older models from previous shipments. Only the two are going to be marketed and all that, it has always been that way.

The extra HD space is dumb since it will only elevate the price of the console. Since its easy and much cheaper to buy a third party HD and replace the HD yourself, I don't know why they even bother with this.

One console SKU please. 40 gig + Dual shock 3 + software BC + price reduction = win.

I agree with this post. Let's not screw over the late adopters and everybody wins.

Insane For Sony
If the RSX in that new model is indeed 550mhz I might have to buy another PS3! :lol

That would give a nice boost to framerate in many games.

Jeebus not this 2 HDMI / 3 ethernet / 6 USB shit again

They are doing it just to put those few people that were posting that SONY LIES gif with all the ports gone on the back in there place.

Now they can move onto the "what do I do with all those ports" jokes. Endless cycle.
