Well, I don't find it all that surprising. Germany does a very good job at representing itself in the world today, and it mostly choses the right side/direction when it comes to EU-policies too(imo). The speech Merkel gave in Israël last week, the way she got the EU back on track during Germany's presidency, ... It all ads up.

EU will become more and more like one country as time goes by.

The heads of state, for the most part, want a United States of Europe type deal.

Germany is great except for three things.

the weather sucks (you can fly to Mallorca for cheap though :) )
the taxes are absurdly high
the Swabians and Saxons are assholes ;) --> Rhineland ftw!!
WHAT??? STFU >_<

Germany sucks. Stupid politicians, greedy capitalists and dumb people.
Sorry, but you're dumb

They like to ban video games.

Its a bit more than that. If the legislation they've proposed were to go through then the vast majority of 'violent games' would be banned.

Someone gets it.

Ford Prefect

GAAAAAAAAY
They produced Werner Herzog, so I'm inclined to agree.

Then again, they don't really like him over there, so maybe I'm inclined to disagree...

lol at 47% viewing China as good country. It seems that UN is doing a good job cleaning up the reputation of some bloody dictator.

Time to Israel to put its civilians under some bombs.

This demonstrates the widening schism between global opinion and American government and media rhetoric (and to a large degree American public opinion). Israel, a nation which receives billions of US tax payer dollars per year, has ranked below North Korea and alongside Iran, labeled the preeminent terrorist state by the United States. That's very telling. The ranking of the United States below an economically crippled, highly corrupt socialist state, Russia, is perhaps even more notable.

Yeah, I'm so sure the influence of America in the world is mainly negative.

Fuck this poll.

Dude, you do realize that sort of attitude is mainly why America is viewed the way it is?

Just wait until Obama gets elected. We will be at the top, guaranteed!

I don't see how any Democrat could make it worse.

???

Watch out Germany. President Obama will lead us the most loved nation on earth.

Unlikely, but he will at least reverse the current trend.

Not really. Short-sightedness is not a purely American trait. I think an articulate, leftist leader like Obama plays far better to most people, than Bush did, and they will probably forget about Bush pretty quickly once he's out of the news.

If a Democratic president actually meant what he or she said on the campaign trail about trade (but they probably don't), plenty of developing countries would have new reasons to resent the US. But I think most people here are only concerned about what Europeans think.

Then Sarkozy singlehandedly reversed decades of tired French jokes in America...

I think not. Just like America's battered image didn't simply disappear last time with Jimmy Carter in the White House.

What do you mean? The world loved us when Clinton was in office. All we need to do is gert Obama in and we will be loved again. It's that easy.

It's not enough.

You need more than a man, you need actions to match the rhethoric. Obama is promising on paper, but the proof is how he handles things and how successful he is at it.

An one-term Obama president, stuck in Iraq despite promises, coercing allies to commit more troops to Afghanistan and, as Guileless pointed out, enacting heavily protectionist policies is unlikely to win lots of favor abroad. With a Republican victory in 2012, you'd be probably back to square one.

EU is not.

Germany is in EU, so Germany two times on the list?
The EU is a sui generis state-like confederation. It has de jure and de facto executive authority over a number of policy sectors. Its listing is not that peculiar.

Dude, who has more influence, Sarkozy on Americans, or Bush on the French? I would be surprised if the number of people here in the states who know who Sarkozy is more then 20 percent. On the other side, I would be surprised if the number of French who know Bush is under 80 percent.

My anecdotal evidence is that the European media loooooves Obama, calling him the black JFK and what not.

And they can still call him to black Rcihard Nixon once in office.

My point is pre-election hype doesn't guarantee anything in 2009 and beyond. JFK mystique is about his short time in office and his untimely death coupled with his wife. Nothing is written yet for Obama, but he does enjoy positive press now, I will grant you that.

My thought is that unless he says something like "Europeans are inbred trash," I am willing to bet they will fall harder for him then the American media has.

Germany being at the top is not surprising. What do the German's contribute? Probably the best cars in the world. Probably the best engineers in the world. So much influence in science and technology. They took full blame for WWII they never ceased to apologise. They re-integrated their shattered country. They rose from those ashes. They play a huge role in the heart of Europe.

Similar for Japan and their work ethic. If Japan didn't suffer from WWII atrocity denial so much they would have easily taken first since they must have won the vote by a long way everywhere else apart from SE-Asia for them to have even gotten so close to winning.

This is most influential, not the best country to live in so of course Canada isn't on the list. Why do you think Iran is in there?

They received plenty of help.

No, America is viewed the way it is because Europeans think it was such a huge travesty that we circumvented the U.N. to invade Iraq coupled with the fact that there were no W.M.D.'s found in that country.

Also the fact that apparently much of the world has a super-short attention span and no perspective of history, which is ironic, since that's one of the things they accuse Americans of.

Sure they did. But ultimately receiving help doesn't make a difference if you don't have a collective work ethic. Which the German's have always had as a society.

That's a nice little phrase to throw around to mask the fact that you're completely lacking in both reading comprehension and any form of debate skills.

No, it just means that from the responses you're giving there's no point even trying to debate with you.
