Capcom releases new Resident Evil 0 N64 footage

I'm pretty sure News Bot said kamiya was working on the OG Resident Evil 3 (HUNK on a boat) before that got scrapped and then he started on RE4 which became Devil May Cry.

Man, Kamiya was really damn busy back then.

Also, the obsession Capcom has had with putting RE on a boat has always been amusingly fanatical.

What's the point of this?

Hmmhmhm. Thx. Might consider the PC version then. Seems like a dumb move to ignore the one platform your old fanbase is on. Heck i even bought a Gamecube for REmake and this.
You can play the Wii versions on WiiU, so arguably there's no real need to port them. HD remastering for systems that can't possibly access the game makes a lot more sense.

What's the point of this?

For real?

Because the development of video games is a fascinating subject for fans of the hobby? Because proper preservation of historically valuable production material is rare? Because it's part of our collective gaming culture?

Even if all you see this as is visual trivia, you see no value in that? Don't you find information in general to be unreducingly valuable? Or do you think that knowing less about any subject at all is somehow better when it comes to fully understanding or appreciating said subject?

I'd love to play the prototype, but what's funny is that this remaster looks visually more impressive than the work on REmake Remastered. Maybe it's just me...but I see more of an upgrade.

Its looking to me that they didn't lose the assets for Zero. Or at least didn't lose as much. So they can probably get a better looking game for less work then REmake needed.

I don't think the old fanbase you speak of is enough to make profit off of it. Didn't revelations do poorly on Wii U?

Crap port over a year after the handheld version launched. And there's s lot of overlap between the 3ds and wiiu so I'm sure a lot of wiiu owners dudnt double dip. I did but I love RE

Not that I don't appreciate the N64 footage, but is this an attempt to try and make the HD remaster look better than it really is?

Why not compare it to the GC version and release the N64 footage separately?

But... the video compares all three versions. N64 (Prototype) -> CG (Original) -> HD Remaster.

They've already compared it to the GC footage in other videos. This is little more than a "this is what this project started as, this is what it's become. Isn't that neat?"

I'd love for the prototype to be included as a little extra, wouldn't even matter if its in a broken state. Just include it for a bit of history.

Somebody in another thread was talking about how there's no such thing as outdated control schemes. Well....

the game was built and balanced around the tank controls

it's completely fine

if you were able to move around like fucking bayonetta it wouldn't be so scary, would it?

also, it would be awesome if they included this RE0 N64 ROM with the remaster as a bonus. At least a demo!

The prototype looks great for its age. I wish someone would kickstart some OG looking survival horror games so I could throw money at them. The HD REmaster is looking damn good as well.

RE0 already looked better than REmake on the Gamecube, and I think it helped that they further refined the mix of pre-rendered and polygonal elements to make them much more seamless.

i think you're either mistaken that the RE crowd is primarily nintendo people, or underestimating the RE crowd on PC+the two consoles that actually get new RE games(quality aside)

Yeah, my bad. I initially watched it on my phone and didn't notice the original comparison. Thought it was all N64 to HDR.

It is pretty neat and I do love seeing where the game started.

Wouldn't mind Capcom doing this for RE1.5 and actually releasing that version too....

I'll buy it at a high price if it includes fully playable prototype.

And 1.5 pls.

Ding ding ding ding ding!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Man it's cool seeing that N64 model of Billy. However, I remember this game being very straight-forward old school Resident Evil gameplay with nearly none of the thrills. A really boring play through. Not sure I'll dip back in like I did for the remake of the remake of RE1.

I've always wondered what the N64 version would have been like. Character switching on the fly? Zapping system like 2? Resident Evil 1's system or a Rebecca solo game.

I remember seeing screenshots of this game outside of the train pre-gamecube but I don't know if I am remembering correctly or maybe I saw screenshots from the other games.

If you expect it to bomb, you haven't seen how well the REmake HD release has been selling have you

This right here ^

Other person sounds upset about the lack of Nintendo platforms.
Resident Evil games have always been multiplatform.
Shinji Mikami was just a Nintendo man and made a demand to have exclusivity on the gamecube at the time for REmake, 0, and 4(Timed Exclusive)

Damn, I miss the potential voice acting gold!!!!! But man, wow, so cool of them to release this. This is that time when Capcom was at the top of their game. Hope they can bring back some of that mid-to-late 90's/early 2000's magic back in their upcoming Resident Evil!

It definitely had a weirder mish-mash of art, thanks to the insect theme of the enemies, but I honestly thought it looked better otherwise.

The way the camera sometimes panned around gave the pre-rendered environments more life than REmake as well. I remember shadows looking a little worse, though. The remaster looks great but it looks a bit brighter which I'm not too sure about.

Really awesome to see that prototype. The look of N64 RE does have it's charms.
I thought RE0 looked so awesome on Gamecube, especially the rain and slimey things at the start.

I felt the opposite and never liked the panning. To me that made the backgrounds look more obviously still images.

Man, that prototype looked wonderful. I'm really surprised by the HD Remaster. It looks really, really good.

I quite enjoyed RE0, so I'll actually pick this up.

The Nintendo fanbase is the "old fanbase" for RE now? lol

Was the 64 version of RE0 the one that Kamiya was working on before he was shifted over to the original incarnation of RE4? I think he wound up with an executive producer credit in the final game, and he knew enough about the game's development to be the source of the 10% complete claim.

Yup, though I believe Kamiya left the 64 version long before it moved over to GC and he shifted over to the original incarnation of RE3, which eventually turned into RE4 and then finally into DMC.

Its looking to me that they didn't lose the assets for Zero. Or at least didn't lose as much. So they can probably get a better looking game for less work then REmake needed.

I think I'd put a lot of it down to them just having a bigger budget, as they had no idea REmake HD would be the huge success it was.

Anyway, very cool to see this. I really do wonder how much that game changed during development. Pretty sure the story would've been completely different, at the very least.

Looks good! I never played the original so this will be a nice treat next year. I would be nice if they included the proto as playable too.
