i really dont know why you guys want sony to die? the system is solid and its sad its had this many issues, and so much hate from every end. The thought of Naught Dog, Insomniac, and Team Ico dying with sony's failure would be a great loss to the world of gaming.

I dont think it's a case of wanting them to die ... but I think it's a case of people wanting a change. Maybe. Look at the major transition periods in the console cycles. 2600 -> NES, Nintendo with Genesis competition, Sony taking the lead with PS1. If we are in the midst of another transition, it is only going to be as a result of more robust and healthy competition.

Sony's "downfall" (for lack of better term - what I really mean is "loss of market dominance") isnt an end in itself - it's just a symptom of strong competition from Nintendo and Microsoft.

Hopefully, like all other changes, lots of good software will come out of it.

This thread is fantastic.

I'm not into Sony hate to the extent of some of you dudes, but I find myself hoping that it semi-bombs so that all it's games end up multiplatform on 360 and I don't have to drop $1000 kangaroo dollars on one.

Its not sony hate but damn, I'm was NOT happy when the backwards compatiblity snafu turned out bad. Also the news from namco + capcom just made PS3 less and less appealing.

I mean VF5 is one thing, then DMC4 + other titles?

truly... a real fiasco.

I'd like to see how they're going to turn this around.

Living beyond our means is a great Australian tradition.

You are just trying to be like Americans.

We hold the record in living beyond our means. We start entire wars and put them on the credit card. (Yes, the annual cost of the war is less than our annual deficit.)

Not sarcastically, I think that Sony taking a big hit this generation will be great for the game industry; a more evenly laid out market means experimentation. I adore Sony games but their hardware route on the PS3 is reprehensible. Also remember that they didn't just 'win' the last generation; in many places around the world, PS2 -was- the game industry.

The takeup of HD television sets is about 20-26% of NEW television sales when I last checked and about 8% households will have one. There is a massive problem in Australia because the federal government fumbled bigtime on digital television so the HD market has been lacking any sort of content to sell itself on. Xbox did -amazing- numbers in Australia, doing almost a third to a half of PS2 numbers, which I know doesn't sound great but considered on a global scale, its better than even the US in terms of market - and its been stated many times that the spike occurred when people realised they could hack into them and use them to serve up tv shows. This doesn't mean that Australia is a land of pirates that will only support the hackable, as the explosion of the Wii here demonstrates, but Aussies LOVE show-off toys. If Sony Australia can manage the brand and get some - any - advertising going, I suspect that this launch won't matter and they'll do okay, despite price and despite ultra-low HD set take-up.

I don't want to take anything away from how hilarious this is, though. Its hilarious. And its all over the media as a massive failure. For comparison, The Age has been running features on the PS3 for two weeks, so I doubt its a necessarily biased reading of the situation; its got AFP running with it and they are usually very good. Obviously though, its a news meme, and not an objective fact of all the stores's launches. I have just been to the game stores in my city (Melbourne) and there were 4 stores with plenty of PS3s and one that wasn't selling them.

lol
are people posting pictures of stores at 1 am?
although i cant say whether or not the aussie launch was a flop or a success, the store were i picked my PSTripple there were at least 30 people. Not great but its not exactly the most popular EB in my State and far from those empty store pics that have been posted.

The store where the main launch event was held in Australia had 70 people.

The same store last year had around 1000 for the 360 launch.

Gamespot:
The largest event was held at Sydney's Pitt St mall, where retail store Myer and Sony Computer Entertainment Australia teamed up to present launch-night activities, which included prize giveaways, live demonstrations, and a screening of Casino Royale on the big screen. Approximately 70 people lined up to grab their consoles at the Myer Pitt St store, with a hundred-strong crowd looking on. The PS3's arrival comes exactly one year after Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in Australia. Microsoft's launch event for the 360--which was also held in Sydney's Pitt St mall--drew a crowd of close to 1,000 people.

Just so you know, I have the best avatars ever.
How long til we get some figures on this launch? It's normally Tuesday of the week after, right?

Sony won't release any figures after the turnups, or will release something that has no relation with how many people showed up for the main launch partay.

were there even 1000 Xbox 2's for launch in australia?
1000 xbox's in one single store ? I highly doubt that.

360 sold around 30,000 units at launch here - I can't remember the exact numbers, but it was something like that. Wii sold a little more than that.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

i'm not surprised simply because how expensive the thing is. how they could honestly think people would pay $1000 for it is insane.
